Long ago, back in 1876, Their were a group of indians called the Lakota Sioux. They were a peaceful small tribe near the Washita River.

3

Their leaders nickname was “Sitting Bull.” He was a great man who not only lead his people to victory, but also knew how to connect with the gods.

4

One day him and his people were attacked by United States leader, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstong Custer. Or as they called him “Long Hair”.

5

Custer was also known was long hair. Him and the Seventh Cavalry attacked in the early winter of 1868.

6

After the battle, Long Hair promised to have peace and moved the Indians to a special land that the United States gave them.

7

Later in the years, Long Hair noticed that there was a large amount of gold near the Cheyennes land.

8

Long Hair wrote a letter to the president saying bad things about the peaceful Indians so he could go to war. T

o the PRESIDENT: “To enable you to answer the enclosed resolution of the Senate of July 7, I have the honor to submit the following brief statement of facts as exhibited by the records of this Department: The Sioux or Dakota Nation of Indians, embracing various tribes, as the Yanktons, Yanctonnais, Brules, Ogallalas, Minneconjous, Sans Arcs, Two Kettles, &c., have long been known as the most brave and warlike savages of this continent. They have for centuries been pushed westward by the advancing tide of civilization, till in 1868 an arrangement or treaty was made with them by a special commission named by Congress, whereby for certain payments and stipulations they agreed to surrender their claim to all that vast region which lies west of the Missouri River and north of the Platte, to live at peace with their neighbors, and to restrict themselves to a territory bounded east by the Missouri River, south by Nebraska, west by the 104th meridian, and north by the fortysixth parallel, a territory as large as the State of Missouri. The terms of this treaty have been liberally performed on the part of the United States, and have also been complied with by the great mass of Sioux Indians. Some of these Indians, however, have never recognized the binding force of this treaty, but have always treated it contempt, have continued to rove at pleasure, attacking scattered settlements in Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and Dakota, stealing horses and cattle, and murdering peaceful inhabitants and travelers….”

9

Once again Long Hair came to attack because of the amount of gold they could get.

10

What he did not realize was how big the Indians army was. Different tribes had joined together to fight against the United States army.

11

Because of that the Indians had a huge victory over Long Hair. With this wonderful victory to never be forgotten.

Parent Page Updated Battle at Little Big Horn Textbook Entry The Indians, also called the Lakota Sioux, were a group that made many schemes against others. This includes attacking scattered settlements, stealing horses and cattle, and murdering peaceful settlers and travelers. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstong Custer, refereed to "long hair" by the Indians, had no tensions to go to war with the Cheyennes. Instead were targeting hostile parts that defy the government. Younger Indian warriors loved to go to war. They would leave their reservation and walk on warpaths and hunt. This was reported in a letter to the President at the time also with the discovery of gold along the western border of the Sioux. However, Kate Bighead, a Cheyenne Indian, was part of the tribe prior to war in a story that she told Dr. Thomas Marquis in 1922. The Cheyennes and Cluster met before in the winter of 1868. Cluster and the Seventh Cavalry attacked and destroyed all of the values of their camps. In the spring of 1867, Cluster promised peace and moved the Cheyenne to a reservation. After that gold was discovered and white people came to move the Indians again. In the winter of 1875, Kate and her brother attacked by white soldiers and sought help from the tribe Sioux. Six tribes eventually joined each other and became as one. The U.S. Army troops and Cluster were expecting a easy defeat against the tribes and unfortunately Lieutenant Cluster and all his troops were killed. Which lead to a massive defeat. This tremendous victory for the Sioux, with the Indians leader "Sitting Bull",was known as "The Battle of Little Bighorn".
