A Worn Path
In Cinderella, Cinderella has to work for her stepmother. She never knew what the next day would bring, or if the Prince would ever find her. She had wondered what she should do after her stepmother said she couldn’t go to the party, even after she did what was asked. Cinderella knew that she had to do what she was told, because that was her job. She knew that skipping the work and going straight to the party was evil, and the tree giving her the dress rewarded her for doing her job.
Universal Question:
What will tomorrow be like? What must I do about it? What is good and what is evil?
In A Worn Path, Phoenix walks down a path and wonders what she must do in order to get medicine for her grandson, she didn’t know what the next part of the path would make her go through, or if the medicine would save her grandson. Phoenix had to ask herself the question “What is good? and what is evil?” when she confronted two people on her journey. One of them helped her to find the medicine she needed, while the other threatened to shoot her.
In The Kite Runner, Amir didn’t know when his father was going to die, so each day he had to prepare himself for it. When he adopted Sohrab, he didn’t know what his life would be like with a kid. Amir kept wondering what he should do, tell people about what happened to Hassan? Will it help or hurt Hassan? He wondered if adopting Hassan’s son would help him regain his heroism.
All four of these stories come from completely different cultural views. Cinderella values hard work and never doing less than what she needed to do. Tony Stark started off valuing money and fame, but quickly learned that life is about much more than that. The culture of Phoenix is to help others no matter what it is going to cause you to go through. And finally, Amir values honor and knew that he needed to do something to gain his honor back. All 4 of these cultures in the stories learn and grow as their “mission” continues on, and they change as the story goes on. Even though these are all different cultures and values, they all have one thing in common. They are qualities that heroes have.
