THE LIBYAN is unforgettable storytelling, told with raw honesty and an eye for detail. This stunning memoir sweeps four continents and several decades, from colonial Singapore through Europe and the United States, to Libya. A poignant saga of historical and cultural wealth, it transports the reader on an exciting journey of passion, terror and betrayal, chronicling a slice of Libya during the early years of Gaddafi's dictatorship. A memoir told by Esther Kofod, a worldly Eurasian girl from Singapore who meets Kamal, a Libyan graduate student, in Washington D.C. Their fated union, against all odds and cultural barriers, is the basis of this powerful tale of love and desire, idealism and obsession. From the exciting cosmopolitan world of the American capital and the tranquility of a southern town, Esther and Kamal leave to begin a new life in the enigmatic North African nation of Libya. The loving welcome awaiting Esther in Libya surpasses all her hopes of being accepted by a devoted and fiercely loyal family. Her account of life in a traditional setting is exquisitely and vividly described in intimate detail, offering a rare look into the Libyan culture. Unwittingly, Esther has also stepped into a world of random arrests and public hangings, into a country mangled by power and greed. Her husband's dream of developing Libya into a model Arab nation is instead replaced by the whims and biddings of an irrational dictator. As Gaddafi transformed the richest nation in Africa into the most repressed and brutalized country in the Arab world, Kamal struggles to survive politically, but soon becomes a target of the dreaded secret police. Forced to run for his life from his beloved Libya, the harrowing escape of Esther and her children provides one of several heart pounding scenes in this fast paced drama. After his return to Florida, Kamal is hunted by rogue CIA and Libyan agents sent by Gaddafi's thugs to eliminate "stray dogs". In his obsession to overthrow his one-time hero, Kamal joins a group of elite Libyan dissidents to help establish an opposition party, the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. However, he soon realizes that he is faced with another enemy...himself. A memorable book with a surprise ending, THE LIBYAN provides a rare look into an obscure culture and a young mother's journey of love into a chaotic world of political intrigue.

"Kofod is a brilliant observer of detail and perceptive in her descriptions of character... Her love for Libya is evident and she presented a vivid account of its modern history through the eyes of Lina and Kamal." -Libya TV (English) "The Libyan offers a unique perspective on living under one of the worst dictatorships of the 20th century...Kofod fluently weaves a tale of romance with her own observations of Libya to produce this gripping novel." -Tripoli Post, Libya "Ms. Kofod has a strong voice and a heck of a story which she tells with integrity and feeling." -Ethan Chorin, Author Translating Libya

"The story never strays from its sharp edge... This is a good read. Fast paced in style, exciting in drama, and sweeping in time and geography" -C. Peter Ripley, History Professor EmeritusAuthor, Conversations With Cuba ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Most of all kofod shows that no culture has monopoly on virtue, that good and evil exist in every nation. There is men that are blinded by extreme idolatry , power or money and the ones that honest,,loving . Men and woman that love their family and country, generous and hospitable. I understand the fear and anxiety that Kofod suffered. In my youth I witness the brutality of leader that silence dissident . Regrettably this leader was supported morally and financially by the US. I salute Kofod . 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Buy The Libyan. You will read it in one sitting By peter ripley Americans, wrote someone wise, learn about geography and foreign cultures from wars and international crises. So it has been with Libya during the half-mad, brutal dictatorship of Muammar Ghaddafi, until the publication of Esther Kofod's, The Libyan. Kofod's energetic novel is driven by her graceful writing and an appreciation for the human behavior that make for a good story--love, loyalty, betrayal, deceit, brutality, courage and a will to survive. Mona, the Singapore-born main character and narrator, joins Kamal, her Libyan husband, when he leaves America to return home and serve in Ghaddafi's government. Gradually, evenly, and with a good author's instinct for drama and detail, Kofod unfolds a personal crisis that destroys a family and a country in crisis that subdues and brutalizes its people. The story never strays from its sharp edge, is never far away from dramatic events that swirl around the family and the country with the force of a dust storm. When the unfaithful Kamal flees the country just in front of Ghaddafi's racing police to join the opposition in exile, Mona is left alone. Knowing her name is on Ghaddafi's blood-stained list of the disloyal, smothered with anxiety that she might be held hostage for her husbands return, fearful for her life and the safety of her young children, Mona is briefly powerless with fear. What follows is a John la Carre-style story of Mona, alternately plotting, smiling, demanding, and begging with her eyes to flee the country with her two

children. In a nation that appeared to be reduced to two brands of people--the government torturers and the brutalized citizens--there appeared another model, those who extend the hand of humanity to Mona. Terrified servants, a highly place army general (who brings along an armed soldier, just in case) Libyan friends, a customs official who finds his mercy in the terrified eyes of a traitor's wife. This is a good read. Fast paced in style, exciting in drama, and sweeping in time and geography. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Love is a many splendid thing.... By Charles E. Moore This book is not, as my wife sometimes calls what she reads, a "Potato chip." Certainly, it is a love story, and a passionate one at that, but made all the more elegant by being so straight forwardly expressed. Its poignancy lies in the tension that exists when one lover, Lina, is in love with the other, and the other, Kamal, is in love with something else. How can the love of Lina compete with the love that obsesses Kamal elsewhere, even if it's as noble as a love for his country, Libya. We have here a kind of sequel to "Casablanca." How can Ingrid Bergman, a passionate woman, ultimately endure the passionate idealism of Paul Henreid, obsessed by the needs of his country and his role as its savior? So also in THE LIBYAN: Lina loves with all the earthy love a woman can bring to her marriage, but Kamal is gradually overwhelmed by his passion to salvage his country from the grip of a dictator, and make it somehow whole, pure, and as perfect as his brilliant mind imagines. Here is a book that tells us much about passion, love, ideals, hope, tragedy, cruelty, family, friends, and over coming. It is written in a spare style, which somehow makes all the more vivid the complexity of the issues it addresses. And in the end, after so much travail, we are granted the benison of forgiving, of moving on, remembering and forgetting, and yet still loving, all at the same time. I enjoyed this book for many reasons, nor to leave out the insight the author grants us respecting Libya itself, as a wonderful country little known to most readers, and only lately catapulted into our cognizance by the overthrow of Ghaddafi. Read it, and you will want to go there...in a quieter time, of course! Read it, and learn something of love that speaks not only of its beauty, but also its paradoxical power to destroy.
