The Next Generation of Carl Wunsche Sr. High School Ensuring every student is college and career ready

Background Carl Wunsche Sr. High School opened in 2006 as the first and only high school of choice in Spring ISD – offering career pathways for 10th-12th graders.
Students are exposed to career and college programs through internships, mentorships, and/or cooperative learning programs.
Wunsche students attended their home campus and were provided transportation to Wunsche for specialized programs.
26 pathways were offered to more than 1450 students.
High Expectations from the Start: Full class load each year Complete an internship or series of field experiences Design and deliver an original Capstone project Participate in service-learning activities Take at least one Advanced Placement, Articulated, Honors or Dual Credit Class
Campus Milestones and Achievements Carl Wunsche Sr. High School has been recognized for its ability to enhance student academic and career success through participation in workplace learning activities, internships, mentorships, and cooperative learning programs. 2008 - Designated as a National Model of Excellence School by the National Educator Program “School of Promise” Awards - Received National Career Pathway Network Business Partnership Award 2009 - National Career Academy Coalition Model - Academy Designations for Professional, Technology and Medical Academies 2010 - Presented the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce Community Development Award for efforts in improving the local area - Only high school in Texas to receive the American Culinary Certification 2011 - Senior Capstone project requirement expanded to include all Sophomores and Juniors 2012 - Selected as 1 of 25 schools worldwide to pilot AP Cambridge Capstone Program 2013 - Identified as 1 of 15 United States Partnership for 21st Century Learning original Exemplar Schools 2014 - All courses offered at pre-AP level or higher

Listened to feedback from students and parents about curriculum and current course offerings.
Received ongoing feedback from local business partners to identify ways to strengthen and improve programs.
Evaluated UIL and TEA potential implications related to current scheduling of extracurricular courses.
Met with comprehensive high school principals to review scheduling of popular UIL activity practices and meetings to evaluate potential of reducing transfer periods.

Moving forward:
Accepting applications from current eighth grade students to start CWHS next school year. This will be the first freshman class.
There are no prerequisites or additional entrance criteria other than student meeting grade-level promotion standards.
A lottery-based selection process for each pathway will select students and the student’s status will be communicated quickly.
Reducing the number of pathways while improving the quality of remaining programs.
This year’s application will be available mid-Jan. through Feb. 28

Carl Wunsche Sr. HS will be designated as a school of accountability.
Ninth grade students and subsequent classes will graduate from Carl Wunsche Sr. High School.
Increased instructional time at CWHS by providing for UIL activity transfers during first and seventh periods.
School schedules across the district will be reviewed to accommodate as many academic pathways and participation in UIL activities.

Wunsche will offer more CTE dual-credit offerings and opportunities to earn associate degrees, licenses and certifications in specialty fields.
Students will receive a greater variety of opportunities to participate in internship and mentorship programs.
More students will be able to complete the coherent sequence of courses designated for their chosen career pathway to graduate with a diploma and endorsement as outlined in the recent education law, House Bill 5.
We anticipate Carl Wunsche Sr. High School to be at capacity next school year.
