Autumn 2014 Edition 9

Latest news… We’re in! Peacemakers 41 Bull Street Birmingham B4 6AF Tel: 0121 236 4796 We have made it safely to our new premises on Bull Street in Birmingham, hurrah! Please update your records with our new address and telephone number. We are now easily accessible by bus and train and, sometime in the future…by tram! This means there is no excuse not to pop in and see us, especially as we are now tenants of the new Quaker Peace and Justice Centre Peace Hub - run by Central England Quakers. Peace Hub will be a place to inform and stimulate dialogue, encourage people to affirm the humanity of others and provide opportunities to take action on a range of issues from resisting the arms trade to supporting Fairtrade. From the 10th November, the centre will open Mon-Fri 11.00am 14.30pm, so why not pop in for a chat - all welcome! www.peacehub.org.uk We have also been warmly welcomed by our neighbours at The Priory Rooms, a not-for-profit meeting and conference venue set in a beautiful 1930s Quaker Meeting House behind the Peace Hub. The Priory Rooms are also owned by Central England Quakers and all profits are used to support Quaker projects, including us here at Peacemakers! Delivering the same ethical practices; promoting Quaker values of peace, community building and sustainability, we look forward to developing a great relationship. This December, The Priory Rooms are offering a 30% discount off room hire and day delegate rates; the perfect opportunity to experience the venue’s superb facilities for the first time! For details, call 0121 236 2317 or email [email protected]

Peacemakers, Peer Mediation and more… Our phone was red hot over the summer with schools approaching us about our work. This has meant that this autumn term we are working in 13 schools, our busiest for a while. The schools are scattered across the West Midlands region, including Birmingham, Dudley, and North Warwickshire. We are enjoying developing relationships with several new schools as well as being welcomed back to schools we have worked with previously.

Over the summer we have been developing our Peacemaker course curriculum to further meet the needs of children and adults to Build, Maintain and Repair relationships. We also successfully piloted an adapted version of the course for a class containing several children at risk of exclusion. The Peacemakers course continues to provide a sound foundation on which to develop a Peer Mediation scheme and skill up teachers through our workshops and Staff Training courses (all of which are also available as stand-alone training). All our services are tailored to meet the needs of your school and we are always happy to discuss new ideas. Call us on 0121 236 4796 or visit www.peacemakers.org.uk to find out more. Whole School Approach Our Whole School Approach extended offer to schools is made up of training for both children and adults, over a two year period. Schools working with us in this way are seeing improved relationships between adults and

children, children able to resolve low level conflict, improved relationships between lunchtime and classroom teams, calmer playgrounds and adults actively acting as positive role models for other members of staff. To date, we have worked with six primary schools in the West Midlands and we are about to start a new partnership with The Oaks in Druids Heath. If you would like to know more about this unique project and the benefits it could bring your school, please contact Anna Gregory at Peacemakers on 0121 236 4796. SMSC – Depth and breadth We have been progressing well with our new resource to support SMSC. A number of primary schools in the West Midlands will be piloting the draft materials this term with a view to publishing the materials in summer 2015. Preparing pupils for life, developing their resilience and confidence and nurturing the schools’ ethos are central to the success of SMSC. Education practitioners will be equipped to facilitate and implement the dimension of SMSC and promote a peaceful school. The resource will include:  links between Peace Education and SMSC  the context and rationale of SMSC development,  guidance for schools to develop their understanding of SMSC  delivering a skills based curriculum exploring the core values of peace education and statutory requirements of SMSC  list of resources and activities Peaceful Schools The Peaceful Schools Movement is a network of schools and organisations working for a peaceful world. The Peaceful Schools Award scheme celebrates the important role that schools can play in equipping children and young people with the skills they need to live peaceful lives and to be peacemakers. The awards have been developed by Quaker Peace & Social Witness, Peacemakers, School Consultant David Holmes and Spiritual England. Peaceful Projects can include things like: • the creation of a peace garden or indoor quiet area • a training programme for staff and pupils on building positive relationships and peaceful conflict resolution • setting up a Peer Mediation or Playground Friends scheme

We are delighted to announce that two schools we have worked with have applied for and achieved the Peaceful Project School award: Fairway Academy

Raddlebarn Primary

Congratulations to them both, the first schools in the West Midlands to receive the award! Do you know a school that deserves such an award? Would you like to suggest your school? Get in touch with one of the team at Peacemakers to find out more. World War 1 These new resources for schools will support critical thinking about World War 1. Produced by Quaker Peace and Social Witness, they make use of original source material to engage children and young people with the dilemmas faced by men, women and families during WW1. ‘Conscience’ is linked to the primary National Curriculum 2014. ‘Conviction’ can be used to support History and SMSC in Secondary Schools. They are available free to download at www.quaker.org.uk/WWIresources. Printed copies at £5 each can be obtained from [email protected]. Contact [email protected] to give us your feedback on these resources or share children’s work for future editions of this newsletter. ‘Quaker Aspects of World War 1’ is an exhibition to be held at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from January 2015. The Peace Hub will be hosting events around conscientious objection from February. Keep an eye on the Peace Hub website for more news… Peacemakers likes… Stable Relationships offers equine facilitated learning and creative activities for schools, vulnerable children, staff and carers. Activities include arts, African drumming, team building, nature trails and creative horse-based sessions focussing on emotional intelligence and promoting calm for learning. Courses take place either at their base in Telford or on location – recently the organisation has started taking horses out to schools. A portion of the organisation’s profits goes to a children’s charity. For more information please visit their website www.stable-relationships.com or call 07866 514106.

November - In Focus: Teaching Controversial Issues Talking to children and young people about what is happening in the world today, the stories they are hearing and the images they are seeing, can be challenging. Sometimes we choose not to discuss difficult issues in the classroom and to steer clear of potential controversy. What is a controversial issue? Lesley Emerson and her colleagues describe controversial issues in their excellent resource Teaching Controversial Issues in the Citizenship classroom ‘When someone talks about something being controversial, it usually means that it involves more than just simple disagreement between people. In general terms, controversial issues can be described as being:  Issues that deeply divide society – such as euthanasia, economic cutbacks, social welfare payments, immigration.......  Issues that challenge personally held values and beliefs – strong political positions, racism, gay rights, civil partnerships......  Issues that generate conflicting explanations - historical events, conflicts such as Northern Ireland, Palestine and Israel....  Issues that evoke emotional responses - crime and imprisonment, education, abortion, disability....  Issues that may cause students to feel threatened and confused – where their families have very strong views on an issue, where peer pressure is strongly in favour of one side of an argument....’ Why discuss controversial issues? The description above highlights the challenge of dealing with complexity in the classroom, but also the opportunities they bring for young people to develop essential skills. ‘The teaching of controversial issues is proposed as a means to develop students' critical thinking. Through discussion of controversial issues, students develop cognitive skills, such as constructing hypotheses and collecting and evaluating evidence. They also gain insights from sharing information with their peers. As students participate in discussions, they also develop important attitudes and communication skills, such as listening carefully, responding empathetically, speaking persuasively, and cooperating readily, with others in a group. Well-managed discussions also promote tolerance of diverse viewpoints on any single issue.’ Angela Harwood & Carol Hahn, 2010 Circle Time Activity – Empathy Footsteps Resources: 2 pairs of paper feet on the floor that children can stand on, facing each other. 1. Act out a simple conflict between two people. E.g. Tariq has lost his pencil and he thinks Ellie has taken it. 2. Ellie and Tariq stand in ‘their own’ footsteps facing each other and tell each other how they feel using an ‘I’ statements. E.g. I felt angry because…. I would like it if …. 3. They then swap over and stand in each other’s footsteps. They acknowledge each other’s feelings by repeating back what they said – e.g. I heard you say you were angry because…. And you would like it if…. 4. They return to their own footsteps and talk about how it felt to be in the other’s shoes. They could talk about the ideas raised by the other person and this can lead to ideas to then try to resolve the conflict. Empathy Footsteps can be used in all sorts of ways, for example to explore how it feels when a new person arrives in school, with one person being the new arrival and the other another child in the playground. Training Opportunity - Approaching Sensitive Issues through Drama and Storytelling. Peacemakers offers a one day training course, giving teachers opportunities to try out a range of activities and strategies for raising sensitive issues through circles and circle time.
