can be described as a whole span of political, economic, and social movements aimed at the equality of the sexes. Organized activities revolving around women’s rights and their interests in today’s society. Dismantling the patriarchy, or the social system where males are in control of the primary power and authority, is the main objective the female movements are influenced by. They are definite differences between each gender, however respecting those differences and overcoming the overall issues are what many people just cannot bring themselves to accept or even attempt. The fight against sexism is increasing as time progresses, incorporating the discussion of feminism and the values that are present. The construct that women and men are simply not equal should not be the issue of today’s day and age, however, that seems to be an idea countless people do not want to address. Amber Storey, the mother of the author offered her viewpoint regarding this idea, saying, “The modern social view

or to men has been an idea adopted from hundreds of years of women's oppression. Understanding how women are still being treated, and wanting to change that aspect of life is a step in the correct direction. If you do not get upset when you realize how the female population is treated, you may be a part of reason

it’s so difficult to abolish.” Women are constantly impacted by social media where they are subject to categorization by physical appearances rather than characteristics that differentiate individuals from others. Outwardly, sexual exploitation Amy Kolb, the mother of a good friend of the author, was asked what her opinion is, regarding women and social media and she said, “I think that women in the media are constantly viewed as sex objects. Sexual exploitation is a huge issue for women of all different orientations and backgrounds. Looks seem to make the woman, rather than intellect, ambition, and accomplish-

Tiana Storey ments.” Social media is now used more prevalently as an outlet and uniting factor for large numbers of women to come together and bring greater attention to the ideals of this movement. The constant and rising amount of violence plaguing this world serves as the greatest negative impact on groups of varying people, especially women and children. Violence against women consists of homicides, harassment, domestic violence of the emotional, mental, and physical state, and sexual assault. The dangers women face from intimate partners, coworkers, and others have been on the rise in recent times. Immense amounts of sexual assault and harassment accounts are being reported as most women are becoming no longer afraid of the assailants or the threats they may have received from them as well. Unfortunately, countless women cannot find the courage or power to come forward and share their experiences, leaving them alone in a fight that must end. Hourglass Piercing Studio Hourglass Piercing Studio in Bay City Michigan is the best option when getting a piercing. Hourglass is located on 311 E Midland St, Bay City, Michigan, 48706. When deciding you want a piercing, make sure you go on a day they are open. The studio is closed Sundays and Mondays. The studio is open Tuesday through Thursday 12 pm to 10 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, the studio is open 12 pm through 11 pm. When deciding you want a new piercing, make sure to bring your birth certificate and driver's license with you. This is required to receive a piercing at Hourglass. Hourglass offers both piercings and dermals. A single piercing is $30 and dermals $80. If you are planning to get a new piercing you can show the owner your school ID to get a deal. All of the jewelry used in the shop is handmade by the owner of the studio. There is an extensive amount of jewelry available to choose from. Some choices include the basics like gold, silver, and rose gold. If you are interested in getting studs for your piercings there are several colored gems to choose from. Some of these colored gems include opal, red, orange, blue, green, etc. If you have a piercing and want a new piece of jewelry for your piercing, you can go to the studio and pick out your favorite and have the owner change the jewelry for you. If you buy the

basic stud earring, it will cost you $20. If you choose later that you would like a new colored gem, you can buy the individual colored gem for $10, without the post of the earring. I have personally been to the studio on several occasions. Everytime that I have went to Hourglass I have had both a pleasant and fun experience. I have received three piercings from this studio. My first piercing that I got at Hourglass was my tragus piercing. I went for the standard gem earring. I was very nervous to get this piercing, and as always, the piercer was encouraging and made the experience enjoyable and fun. Next piercing I had done at Hourglass was my inner conch piercing. I decided to get this piercing on the same day as my tragus piercing and I was equally as nervous to get this piercing. As to be expected this piercing was just as easy as the first. Lastly, and most recently, I had my nose pierced. This piercing I was especially nervous for, because I had never had anything pierced beside my ears be-

fore. As usual, the piercer told me that it would be quick and easy and made it go very fast, so I couldn’t second guess myself. I loved the way my nose piercing turned out and for this nose ring I went with the smallest stud available. With every experience that I’ve had, the studio has been clean and the piercing equipment is always been either brand new out of the package, or freshly sanitized. Michigan Roadside Drug Testing Since November 8th, a new Michigan roadside drug testing device and procedures have been enforced. If you are pulled over by a police officer in one out of the five Michigan counties and it looks like you are under the influence of drugs, you will be asked to submit your saliva for a test. Drug Recognition Experts in Berrien, Delta, Kent, St. Clair, and Washtenaw counties will carry handheld devices to test the presence of drugs in drivers’ saliva. “They’re not going to be randomly pulling people over, they have to have a valid reason,” MSP First Lt. Jim Flegel said. “They’re going to be looking for things like weaving in their lane, driving too fast, driving too slow, and not using your turn signal.” Examples like that would indicate that somebody is driving while impaired. Although they have this new tool, police will still continue to follow established procedures during traffic stops to check for drug impairment. Following a traffic stop, police still have to establish probable cause for impairment with sobriety tests to follow. “The only difference with the pilot

program is if they determine their impaired on some type of drug, they're going to ask the driver to submit an oral fluid swab,” Flegel said. With the Alere DDS2 oral fluid test, the instrument will be used to measure for drugs in the drivers’ saliva. The device will record for the following six substances: amphetamine, benzodiazepines, marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and opiates. The swab tells the officers when there is enough saliva on it to be tested which collects saliva from the inside of the mouth by the suspected impaired driver. The swab is then inserted into the bottom of the device and takes roughly five minutes to display on the screen with positive or negative results for the presence of drugs. The saliva test will only tell police if the drug is present or not, it does not determine impairment. Laekyn Legner says, “This will be a useful device to have to keep impaired drivers off the road.” The handheld device is light, portable, and compact, with a full color screen for any part of the day. The testing limits are set to ensure recent drug intake can be detected and to ensure the device performs reliably. With that being said, Lauren Legner says, “If this device is going to work, it has to detect the drugs spot on.” The device is advertised by the manufacturer's website to be easy to use and less in-

vasive than urine or blood sampling. "Our handheld instrument empowers officers to make informed decisions that will positively impact public safety,” said Scott Taillie, vice president, toxicology at Abbott. The pilot program was established by the Michigan Legislature under the Public Acts 242 and 243 of 2016. Since this device was introduced, people have been posting about it online. Attorney Neil Rockind Law in Bloomfield Hills said, “The legal system and law enforcement wants it to be fast and perfect,” to Mlive. “Science is not fast. Developing scientific techniques and perfecting those techniques typically takes years and years, and science is never perfect.” Picture: The Alere DDS2 oral fluid test Pictured: Source: Picture: Lt. Why Go On Exchange?

To do an exchange program can be an important step in a student's life. More than a simple trip to another country, the exchange program promotes the aggregation of new cultures and instigates the student to see the world with different eyes. When I decided that I wanted to do an exchange program, I went to talk to my parents. I did this because, most of the time, a trip of this type (long or short term) generates expenses. I decided this with little time of anticipation, I wasn’t sure that my parents would let me do it, as they didn’t accept at first. I kept insisting to them, and I hate to insist. Finally, my dad said he could go with me at some exchange programs companies so he could understand more about it. It’s not very recommended to exchange when you are Junior or Senior in Brazil, because these are the most difficult years and the years that we learn the most in Brazilian schools. The schools in the United States are considered easy for us. Brazilian schools are much more rig-

orous and harder, and my father didn’t want me to be late in school, and that was the first reason he said no. “To do an exchange program isn’t only to learn another language, but to become independent. We Brazilians have extra people for everything and we don’t know how to do anything, in another country you will learn how to clean the house, to cook, to wash your clothes and a several of other things.” said Andrea Campos, the owner of the company we chose for my exchange. In addition, it is also very good for my life in the future, companies look for insurance employees who have done interesting things in life, have an open mind. Having an exchange in my résumé will certainly increase my chances of getting that much-desired vacancy. The exchange program is a game of luck. I'm very grateful for that everything’s going very well in my exchange. My family misses me but they are all very happy because I am happy. I love my host family and I love my life. Every day I thank my parents for letting me do this incredible and unique experience. I only have good experiences to tell about my exchange and beyond all, it opened my mind to the world. Before I doing my exchange program I

I’m 16 years old and have a great passion: traveling, I have been in 15 different countries and this has opened my mind a lot and I want a profession that allows me to try new cultures because it’s something that I feel a huge pleasure doing. I’m a few thousand miles from my home country and looks like I'm in another world, with people doing different things, having a different mind and this is super interesting to me, and incredible. “I always wonder, why birds stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on earth. Roy Moore Trouble

All over the world, sexual assault happens. Whether it's a small account of it, or a very critical and large account. This stuff affects people's lives for years and years. Some people even harm themselves because the pain and controversy gets to them. Young children go through so much because older people and even some younger people can't control themselves. A man by the name of Roy Moore is a GOP nominee for the United States senate seat in Alabama. Moore was in legal trouble in the 1970s for sexual contact with a fourteen year old girl by the name of Leigh Corfman. Ray was 32 years old when he committed this offense. He approached the young lady outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Alabama. Their first meeting was when he picked her up outside her house. On their first “date” he kissed her and they went to dinner at a high quality restaurant, where he bought her fancy drinks that he thought would flatter her. Their second “date” he took her to a hotel, where he took her clothes off and felt her up. He even made her touch him in very demented and disgusting ways. After, she shut everything down, because her mom found out and was not having it, she was afraid to tell anyone what happened. In Alabama, the age of consent is 16, which makes everything Roy was doing illegal, and strongly against the law. It is a technically labeled as a second degree sexual abuse charge, a

misdemeanor and a felony, which should be a big reason he shouldn't be running for GOP. He committed many accounts of illegal activity. “He doesn't deserve to be a nominee,” says Jeremy Jacobs.

Page 5

Austyn Snyder reporters that this was fake news and not to listen to what others are saying about him, because he's religious. He also mentioned that the only reason this is coming up is because people don't want to see him succeed. Regardless of what he says, he still committed the crime and should be punished with something instead of nothing. “No crime should go left unpunished,” says Noah Goik. Sexual assault is not right and happens every single day around the world to older and younger people of both genders. Pictured: Roy Moore Credited: Source Pictured: Republican Logo Credited: Source

Also while he was fooling around with younger ladies, he dated three girls between the age of 16 to 18. This happened when he was in his 30s. One of the girls he approached when she was 14, he waited till she was 16 to ask her for a date. When he asked her for a date, her mother was totally against it and wouldn't let it happen. When Moore was questioned about these allegations, he told

25 Days of Christmas

Christmas season is almost upon us, and one of the best things about it is all the Christmas movies. There are tons of seasonal movies that are very popular, but Christmas movies might be the most popular. Due to this, the television network Freeform has an event called 25 Days of Christmas that plays Christmas movies every day of December all the way up to Christmas. They’ve been doing this for many years and it is wellliked.

The most popular Christmas movies that you might’ve heard of are Elf, Polar Express, Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, and Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Elf is about a man who likes Christmas quite a bit, and that’s all he can think of. One of the ways that he shows this is by saying, “Candy,

candy canes, candy corns, and syrup,” in response to being asked the main food groups. One of the best Polar Express quotes is when the train conductor tells the main character, “Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” All of these movies are played in the 25 Days of Christmas event. This event gets the most attention on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. The movies that are played on Christmas Eve are: Disney’s A Christmas Carol at 12:10pm, followed by The Polar Express at 2:15pm, then National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation at 4:25pm, next is Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas at 6:35pm, then Elf at 9:15pm, and finally to end Christmas Eve is The Santa Clause at 11:25 pm. Then, the movies that are on during Christmas Day in the morning are: Frosty’s Winter Wonderland at 7am, then Disney’s Prep and Landing at 7:30am, after that it’s Disney’s Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice at 8am, next is Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town at 8:30am, and to round out the morning is Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas at 11am. These movies being aired during the day include: The Polar Express at 12:35pm, then National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation at 2:35pm, next is The Santa Clause at 4:45pm, then Elf at 6:45pm, then, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is on again at 8:50pm, and the last

Jacob Murawski movie of Christmas Day and the last movie of the 25 Days of Christmas event is Four Christmases at 12am. These times are all in eastern standard times. They like to play the movies that many people know on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, because they know this is when everybody watches.

Microtransaction Mess Up

Recently, the company Electronic Arts made a mistake by trying to include a way to unlock heroes in their upcoming game Battlefront II through the purchase of loot boxes in game using real currencies, such as USD or Euros. This is not a new thing, considering games such as Call of Duty and almost any sports game has microtransactions to unlock players or new weapons. The main problem with Battlefront II, was that it was extremely tedious to unlock these loot boxes in game without paying more. It would take about 40 hours just to unlock a new hero in the new Battlefront, or you could buy a lootbox and make the process quicker. This business model has been starting to cloud the gaming industry by allowing players who are busy to just buy their way through the game without any experience. Companies start to prey on these players and keep raising prices, and not making it easier for these players to unlock items. To unlock and max out all characters and items in the game, it would take 2600 hours, or about $2,100. While EA said in a statement, “The numbers that are currently released are more than it would actually take,” They

didn’t offer any new numbers to explain how long or much money it would take to max out all characters. Microtransactions started in the mid-2000’s, with mainly cosmetic items for very cheap. Companies like Microsoft and Bethesda introduced items that would change how certain items in a game looked or for extra items in game that did not really affect gameplay. Fans of games were okay with most of the cosmetic items but were furious over one item, Horse Armor. Bethesda added Horse Armor to their game The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion for the price of $2.50, but people were furious you could not get the armor sets ingame. You never had to pay for items in a game before, they were already set in the game, or you could cheat them in if you didn’t have the time to obtain it. Nowadays, no one even blinks over microtransactions that can cost up to $60, or more total. People will buy a single character for $10, or $5 for a weapon skin that has a bunch of cats on it. The main problem with this system is you have to pay more money on a game that probably already cost you $60 to buy in the first place.

Page 7

Joseph A Bailey II People will now pay $40 to $60 to buy a “Season Pass” that gets you all the upcoming content for the game without paying more. This seems like a deal, but you are paying for content that you don’t know will be good or not or content that is not worth it. While it seems good, it usually turns up not worth it. The newest microtransaction trend is loot boxes. With loot boxes, you have a chance to get amazing items but usually get common items. This sounds like gambling, yet is not considered gambling yet by the ESRB which allows kids to gamble for these items using real money due to their parent’s ignorance about the content of the game. This trend keeps growing and allowing more children to get hooked on gambling at a young age.

Fast Food Health Issues in America nutrition levels, diabetes, strokes, and obesity. If you have to have fast food, you should check the nutrition information on many of the chains websites to try to pick the healthiest option. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, your body needs daily vegetables, fruits, grains, protein, and dairy requirements. Many fast foods do not have the nutrition we need, but there are ways to check the nutritional value of these foods.

Today in the United States, nearly one-third of adults suffer from obesity. Here in Bay City alone, we have 8 McDonald’s fast food chains, which could be one of the main causes for the high obesity rates. Since 1970, the number of fast food chains in America has doubled. Since the number of fast food chains has doubled, the obesity rates have doubled as well. The cost to eat foods that may be worse for us is substantially lower than if we were to choose to eat better foods. At McDonald’s, the cost of a salad is nearly the price of four McDoubles. However, it would be just as much money, or maybe even less, to stop at a grocery store and buy a healthier alternative. Fast food seems to be the quick and easy option, so when we don’t have time to cook, we rely on fast food. If we had more healthy fast food options, we may be able to lower the rates of obesity. Fast food can lead to lower

Chyanne Snyder -free drink, such as sprite, or even water. When I had asked my mother why she gets fast food she responded with, “I usually get fast food when I just don’t want to cook.” This is a common reason used amongst many Americans. When I had asked a customer at McDonald’s why she goes to McDonald’s with her husband regularly, she replied with, “It’s just somewhere to go when we just want to spend a little time together.” This couple doesn’t eat a huge meal, they just get something small to eat while they spend time together. Some substitutions if you have to go to McDonald’s would be get a side salad instead of the fries, in kids meals you can substitute the fries for apples or yogurt. These substitutions can give you more fruit and vegetables towards your daily needs. Soda is a major issue as well, drinking too much soda could cause the body to dehydrate because of the high amounts of sugar and caffeine. This could be another substitution when going to a fast food restaurant, instead of grabbing a Coke, you could go for a caffeine

Hockey Hall of Fame Inductions The Hockey Hall of Fame inducted 7 people on November 13th. This 2017 class includes Dave Andreychuk, Danielle Goyette, Paul Kariya, Mark Recchi, Teemu Selanne, and Clare Drake. This will go over a few of the inductees.

Dave Andreychuk played for the Buffalo Sabers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Tampa Bay Lighting. With the Buffalo Sabers, in which he was a consistent player and played in the 1990 AllStar game. In 1991, he scored 41 goals and 91 points for his best season with the Sabers. When traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, he had a season with 53 goals and 99 points, and earned a selection to the 1993 NHL AllStar Game. In 2001. Andreychuk signed with the Lighting, and in 2004, he led them to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup title. Through his career, he played 1639 regular season games, scored 640 goals, and 698 assists for 1338 points. Danielle Goyette had played for the Canadian women’s hockey team and became the fourth leading goal scorer in the IIHF World Women’s Championship tournament. She played in 9 tournaments, which lead to 8 gold medals and one silver medal. She collected 68 points and scored 37 goals. Goyette helped

team Canada to their first silver medal, after Women’s Hockey was first admitted to the Olympics in 1998. She then lead Canada to gold medals in 2002 and 2006. Goyette is the second leading scorer in Women’s Hockey history in the Olympics. She ended her career with 171 career games, 113 goals and 105 assists. Paul Kariya was drafted by the Mighty Ducks fourth overall, but stayed in college for one more year, but joined Team Canada in the 1994 Winter Olympics. After this he decided to quit college and go pro. With a shortened season due to a lockout in 1994, Kariya joined and scored 18 goals and had 39 points. In 1996, Kariya scored 50 goals and 58 assists for 108 points, also playing in the All-Star game. He was chosen as the Mighty Ducks team captain in 1997, and helped the Ducks to a playoff spot, but lost in the second round. In 2003, Kariya lead the Mighty Ducks to the Stanley Cup finals, only to be beat by the New Jersey Devils. That was his final game for the Ducks, and he left playing 606 games, 300 goals, 369 assists, and 669 points. Kariya would then hop from team to team, until his retirement in 2011. Mark Recchi had a 22 season career, that included three Stanley Cup championships, with three different teams. He started his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1988, and in 1990 scored 40 goals and 113 points, along with 34 playoff points, he led the Penguins to a Stanley Cup. He was then traded to the rivals of Pittsburgh: the Philadelphia Flyers. There, he played with Brent Fedyk and Eric Lindros who were called the “Crazy Eights”, and in 1993, he

Page 9

Brandon Sheredy scored 53 goals and 123 points setting a Flyers’ record for a single scoring record. After being tossed around the league for years. He ended his career with the Boston Bruins and won the Stanley Cup his final game. He is just one of ten players to win the Stanley Cup with three different teams. After talking around the school asking students to get some of their feelings on the inductees, Cade Klapish said, “Kariya was a defiant in this class of 2017. An amazing player that should have been put in the hall of fame earlier”. Ryan Leavitt said that “Recchi was a solid player. So happy to see a player that helped three different teams to a Stanley Cup to get recognized like this.”

History of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade that is annealing held on Thanksgiving morning is a large spectacle that is watched by over 50 million people. The parade takes place in front of the Macy’s largest store in New York City on 34th Street. Despite this parade taking place on Thanksgiving, it's more centered around Christmas, which the main figure, Santa, being toward the end of the parade. This parade actually goes back to the Roaring 20’s where Macy’s had expanded their business to cover an entire city block. Due to that latest expansion, it had over one million square feet that could be used for holiday shopping. To celebrate that, they had the first Macy’s Thanksgiving parade on November 27, 1924. The first parade consisted of what you may have guessed. Floats that resembled nurseryrhyme stories, such as Little Miss Muffet and the Little Red Riding Hood. Instead of working that day, many of the Macy’s workers dressed up in costumes to take part in the parade. Some were seen wearing clown outfits, as well as knight armor. Animals were used in the parade that were taken from the Central Zoo bringing the circus-like atmosphere to the parade. The one thing that has remained the con-

sist driving force of the parade is the marching bands that play throughout the floats and balloons that passed by. Back when it first began, four bands took part in the parade. Ultimately, the most important part of the parade to most was the end where Santa is featured for one and all to see. The next day, the manager of the department store at the time put a full page ad in the New York Newspaper saying that they would indeed hold another parade on the same day next year. Saying, “We did not dare dream its success would be so great.” From that day on, they did not fail to disappoint, as they kept the parade a tradition moving forward. “This parade includes several things to do before you die,” said Al Roker, who is one of people that cover the event on television.

Over time, much has changed in terms of the parade, for one being that the employees no longer need to have the role of being in costumes or floats. Ce-

Page 10

Kendrick Brissette lebrities have become a major focus in this parade, as they often perform when on the main stretch in front of the Macy’s store, where it is often televised. Floats are still in the parade but there aren’t as many of them, as some have turned into pop-up balloons of many of the childhood characters that we grew up with. What has stayed the same throughout the parade’s history is the marching bands and the ending of the parade that always has Santa at the end. The Second-Closest Exoplanet: Ross 128 b

On November 15, 2017, BBC News released an article about a nearby planet that looks to be similar to our earth. Astronomers consider it to be a good target for looking for life elsewhere in the universe. Ross 128 b, the planet’s given name for now, sits about eleven light years away and will hopefully provide to be another habitable planet in our galaxy. Ross 128 b is not the closest planet that astronomers have discovered to our own. But, compared to Proxima b, the closest known planet, it has far more likely chances to be habitable. But for the sake of comparison, both planets orbit a red dwarf star, which are popular in our galaxy. Both have temperatures somewhat akin to earth. They differ from there, however. Proxima Centauri is Proxima b’s star, and it is known as an active star that has radiation eruptions that make Proxima b less habitable, with it receiving up to 30x more radiation than our earth. While Proxima Centauri is a rather active star, Ross 128 b’s star is rather ‘quiet’. It is less active than Proxima Centauri, and therefore provides Ross 128 b with higher chances of life. This can still be debated though, since the exoplanet revolves 20x closer

to its star than we do to our own, and receives only a little more radiation from its star than we do. Red dwarf stars are smaller and dimmer, however, so the habitable zone tends to be closer to the star. Ross 128 b still has the potential to be habitable and good for life development. Nicola Astudillo-Defru from the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland is the co-discoverer of the new planet, and has stated, “Just because Proxima Centauri blasts its planet with strong flares and high energy radiation, yes, I think Ross 128 b is much more comfortable for the development of life. Depending on its composition and the reflectivity of its clouds, the exoplanet may be life friendly with liquid water as the Earth, or sterile like Venus.” From what we can see with our current telescopes, we know that Ross 128 b’s atmosphere could have temperatures around -60 to +20℃. They also know that the exoplanet is bigger than our own, at 1.35 times the mass of Earth. There are hopes for O2 in it’s atmosphere, too, but our current telescopes cannot see Ross 128 b’s atmosphere very clearly, so we do not know if it actually has O2. There is a telescope that could see into Ross 128 b’s atmosphere clearly in the future. In

Page 11

Hannah Sullivan Chile, the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is under construction, and is looking to be finished around the middle of next decade. That and NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (also to be finished sometime next decade) can boost astronomer’s enquiries once finished. Dr. Xavier Bonfils of the Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics in Grenoble, France, was the lead author of the study of Ross 128 b. On the new telescopes that will soon come into play, he said, “When ELT comes online it shall provide both the collecting power and the angular resolution to observe Ross 128 b directly. We will be able to see if it has an atmosphere and, eventually, to search for O2, water and CH4 (methane).” Pictured: Artist’s interpretation of Ross 128 b Picture Credit: Source. Starting with number five on the list, Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama series. The series centers on the continent Westeros, where there were seven feuding kingdoms, until they were united by the Targaryen family, using dragons, three centuries prior to the beginning of the story. The dragons died and the Targaryen Mad King was removed in a civil war. Robert Baratheon has ruled ever since. The only two surviving Targaryen children, Viserys and Daenerys, threaten to retake the Iron Throne. As a civil war, this threat and a mythical threat to the north ensues, Baratheon must protect the throne. Spencer Moulthrop says, “The storyline is so complex, something unexpected happens every episode and leaves your jaw dropped.” Next on the list is I Love Lucy. The show centers on Lucy Ricardo and her husband, and singer,

Ricky Ricardo. The two of them, along with their friends and landlords, the Mertz, get in and out of trouble in their search for stardom. The problem lies with Lucy’s lack of having marketable performance skills. The show is a comedy, set on Lucy’s search for the spotlight. Third on the list is Seinfeld. This show is about minor stand up comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld and his friends Elaine, Cosmo, and George have an act for getting in trouble, and have laughable ways in which they solve their problems. The show has no recurring plot, but has recreated stories from Seinfeld’s own life. The story is described as the story about nothing. The part of every episode that Lynn Chislea enjoys most is, “Cosmo’s grand entrances, that were goofy and spontaneous.” Second on the list is Breaking Bad. The plot of the show is based off the life of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher. Financially, White is in ruins, with a new baby on the way, and the medical bills from his teen son’s battle with cerebral palsy. Teach-

Page 12 Seth Chislea er’s salaries are just not enough to pay the bills for him. Things get worse when White learns he has terminal cancer, which will further destroy his family financially. White shoots to earn as much money as he can in his remaining days by turning an RV into a meth lab. Finally, number one on the list is The Simpsons. The Simpsons are idols among American TV culture. The show centers in Springfield. The main character, Homer Simpson, is not your typical family man. He works at a nuclear power plant and has a very immature side to him. Homer tries to guide his family, but unfortunately, a lot of the time, this gets flipped, and his family has to guide him. Homer’s family includes his loving wife Marge, troublemaking son Bart, smart and overachieving daughter Lisa, and the baby Maggie. The show centers on the challenges and problems within the family, and how they overcome them in crazy and outlandish ways. He believes if our team does that, the wins and losses will take care of themselves. This season he is looking forward to his team playing to maximum potential and watching us grow as a team. “I believe this team has lots of potential that they want to strive to reach,” says

Thunberg. One of his favorite memories coaching was, “challenging Danette DeCorte at half time to play better against Western. She took over the game and scored 29 points and 22 rebounds, in the second half, and Central ended up winning by 4 points.”

Cards *for* Humanity

In an effort to make Trump’s wall harder to build, the company that created *Cards Against Humanity*, has bought acres of land along the US-Mexican border. A vacant plot, which they believe will make the wall harder to build. The company took donations of $15 from people to help “save America”. In order to donate, you first had to fill out a survey with questions such as: who did you vote for in 2016? If you donated you, got gifts from the company, including new cards, a picture of the newly purchased plot of land, and a certificate or their promise to fight the wall. The company is known for its crazy behavior. Every year, it does something odd while raising lots of money. In 2015, they raised $50,000 worth of nothing on Black Friday. Last year, they raised $100,000 for a “holiday hole”. As you can imagine, it didn’t actually serve any purpose. The company will not be able to stop the construction of the wall, however, they have made it more difficult. The company recently hired a law firm that specializes in eminent domain, “to make it as time-consuming and expensive as possible for the wall to get built”, as said on its new

website “*Cards Against Humanity* Saves America.” However, it would seem they failed to consider who actually pays for the wall. That would be the tax payers. So, by buying this plot of land, not only did they get lots of publicity and cash from donations and such, but they will also be causing the price of the wall to go up. Meaning, more tax money will be lost to the wall. In the end of it all, the company was really the only one to truly benefit from this stunt. They have a lot of support from people against the wall. The people who supported this lost their $15, and will now be forced to pay any legality means that may arise from the situation. Regardless, Presi-

Page 14

Zachary Pluto dent Trump, being the stubborn man he is, will most likely figure some way around this inconvenience. The stunts, after all, don’t continue longer than the publicity for them does. Most likely, after people start to forget about this and sales return to normal, they will sell the land to someone else. If they don’t however, it is completely possible that Trump would simply just leave a chunk of land out and build around what they own. “It will be fun, it will be weird, and if you voted for Trump, you may want to sit this one out,” the company said on its new website. Addiction: Struggle and Cure Addiction is defined as: the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. The word is derived from a Latin term for “bound to.” In the 1930’s, researchers just began to determine the cause behind addictive behaviors. It was first believed that those struggling with addiction we’re only lacking willpower, and with both rewarding and punishing the sufferer, it could ultimately stop the addiction. 21.5 million Americans (ages 12 and up) are bound to some sort of substance abuse, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2014. This number has risen to 23 million. 1 out of 10 Americans struggle with some form of addiction. “Teen drug and alcohol use usually leads to addiction as an adult. Life has enough struggles, let's not have to overcome this as well, if it can be avoided,” Tracy Inches comments on addiction as a young adult. However, since the 1930’s, researchers have drastically changed their views on addiction. Advances in studies of the human brain have helped immensely in our knowledge of how drugs alter a user. The part of the brain that is affected is called the Limbic System. The Limbic System contains the Hypothalamus, also known as the pleasure center. The Hypothalamus is responsible for releasing hormones throughout the body.

When drugs enter the body, the chemicals alter the brain by changing the way neurons naturally send. Certain drugs will mimic the way a neuron is sent, while other drugs will release abnormally large amounts of neurons. The drug will then flood the brain with dopamine, a neurotransmitter found in regions of the brain that is responsible for movement, emotion, motivation, and pleasure. Our brains are naturally rewarded this way, but when a drug interferes it will overstimulate this system, causing the brain to want to repeat the stimulus (drug). Drugs can produce 2-10 times more dopamine in its users, and last 2-3 times as long. The absence of drugs in a user results in the sudden decrease of dopamine within the brain. This causes the user to have abnormally low pleasure in anything, whether that be drugs or naturally occurring (sex, and food). This is because the brain no longer has a large abundance of dopamine being released, and is going through a “withdrawal”, just as the user is. Withdrawal symptoms can be both physical and emotional. The severity of these symptoms is dependent on: what type of substances is taken, the amount taken, the length of time the substance was taken. Each will

Page 15

Morgan Louchart-Inches

play a role in how long the user will go through withdrawal. Recovery for an addict can be very painful, and time consuming. The first 90 days of treatment are highly critical. This is the time where most relapse tendencies occur. Recovering does not simply mean avoid using the substance, but also creating a new life for yourself where you’re not longer surrounded by it. “Recovering from abuse, is taking it one day at a time. It's not too late to start, because you have to start somewhere,” Carrie McCarty comments on the topic. She too is on the road to recovery. It's a hardship but it is very possible if the user is determined to no longer be consumed by their substances. Did 9/11 Actually Happen? There are several conspiracy theories that are going around, and one of them focuses on 9/11. September 11th, 2001 was one of the most horrific terrorist attacks on The United States that is remembered internationally. Although, there are people who believe it never happened. One of the most prevalent theories includes the damage done to the Pentagon. There were two holes punctured in the building’s exterior wall. One of them was 16 ft. wide and 75 ft. wide. The question is: How does a plane 125 ft. wide create a hole, or even fit through a hole 16 ft. wide? The truth is, when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon, it created the 75 ft. wide hole. A crashing jet doesn’t make a flawless cutout in a reinforced concrete wall. Mete Sozen, a professor of structural engineering says, “In this case, one wing hit the ground; the other was sheared off by the force of the impact with the Pentagon’s load-bearing columns.” Sozen specializes in the behavior of concrete buildings. Essentially, the plane hit the building in more of a liquid form rather than a solid. The entire wing simply wouldn’t cut into the building. Also added, the hole was 12 ft. wide- not 16 ft. ASCE concluded that the hole was made by the remains of the aircraft, not the entirety of the aircraft itself. This is only one of several theories that have been circling around the Internet since the incident occurred. Speculation has been a prominent theme among the public opinion of 9/11. When given a survey, 54.3% say they agree that the government is hiding knowledge

Page 16

about the attacks. Another conspiracy that has a popular reputation, is the theory that the collapse of the Twin Towers couldn’t have created the amount of dust and ash with only the collapse itself. Theorists say that explosives were inside the building, and that caused the amount of debris and demolition. Pictured: The 9/11 explosion and conspiracy protest Credit: Source Some information taken from: Source

Van Romero, an explosives expert, says, “The collapse of the structures resembled those of controlled implosions used to demolish old structures.” Romero’s statements are cited for many different journals used to support conspiracy theories about the collapse of the WTC. However, scientists refuted the theory with an in-depth explanation of how the WTC truly collapsed. An explosion is not required in order for a collapse to occur. The weight from the floors above the collapse simply wouldn’t be able to withstand the amount of energy and force, causing it to crash down onto the floor below. Thus, creating a chain reaction for the whole structure to tumble down. With all of the floors moving so quickly and transferring enormous amounts of energy, the amount of concrete dust and ash were significant. The said clouds of dust may seem to be the result of a controlled demolition, but it’s simply science.

UCLA Basketball Players Stealing in China The UCLA men's basketball team recently went on a trip to China. They were there for a game against Georgia Tech. Three freshmen decided to go shopping at a few stores. Their names were LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley, and Jalen Hill. Then, they stopped at Louis Vuitton and made some terrible decisions: they were caught shoplifting. They were arrested and taken to questioning. They were then told they could face three to ten years in a Chinese prison. LiAngelo Ball’s dad, Lavar Ball, was questioned about the situation and said, “It’s not that big of a deal. You guys are making it a big deal, he’ll be okay.” This showed some confidence from the father of a young man potentially facing ten years in prison. But, they had a plan to get him out, and with the help of the Donald Trump, they got to talk to the Chinese Government. Trump asked the president of China to personally see over the case and that the punishment be fit to the crime. With the help of Trump, the three freshman were able to be released and come back to the United States. They arrived home on Wednesday, November, 15th. When they arrived home, they

were the stars of a press conference and were questioned about the situation. Ball apologized, saying, “I’m sorry for stealing from the stores in China.” Later, he went on to even thank President Trump. The other two freshmen apologized and thanked the president as well. However, the Bruins are currently not sure what they are doing with the freshmen. There have been reports that the three freshmen will all be suspended from the team indefinitely. There have also been reports of the school planning to release the three. They have been talking and will make a decision soon. After the release of the students, Ball was being interviewed, and was questioned about the support of the president, and he replied with, “Who?” This lead to the President responding with a tweet. He said, “Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, Lavar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!” It probably wasn’t a great move by Ball, but luckily for him, his son is home and not in a Chinese jail. The Ball family haven’t

Human Trafficking in Michigan Human trafficking has become a major issue all over America. Trafficking is a crime that increases over time; statistics have doubled from the 2012 to 2015, making it one of the fastest growing crimes. In the United States, the most common form of human trafficking is prostitution. Human trafficking is described as the modern day form of slavery. Facts indicate about 80-85% of trafficking is for sex, the remaining is for labor, organ harvesting, and slavery. Today, there are more slaves in the world than there has ever been before. Girls with disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, have also been discovered in sex trade industries. The United States has taken legislative action in order to stop human trafficking. Trafficking usually comes from exploitation, which is where someone is being forced to participate in prostitution, and victims are being forced commit sexual acts. Trafficking, in some cases, can be avoided when traveling by keep an eye out, beware of strangers, and avoid unsafe situations. Human trafficking has been happening more and more frequently, and as for the victims, they are everywhere sometimes, in plain sight. Many of them are trying to decide who to tell, and how to get out. For others, they are scared to speak up and scared of what will happen to them when, and if, they can get help. Police should be searching for trafficking victims, because they could be in a life threatening situation, where they don’t have anyone to help them. About 90% of sex trafficking victims are women and children, mainly because they are more vulnerable.

Many victims die from trafficking due to disease, neglect, torture, starvation, confinement, and forced drug use and/or abuse. Trafficking usually becomes a problem because of corrupt governments, lack of border control, and, as stated before, women are more vulnerable. Our country, as a whole, should be working together to raise social protection levels, try to prevent violence and abuse in relationships, and eliminate discrimination against women and different types of races. Most human trafficking organizations shockingly are not operated by just males; women also are human traffickers. Sometimes there are male only and women only sex trade organizations. In most sex trade organizations, the age of the victim doesn’t matter. As many people know, human trafficking is not an easy issue to talk about. This is why it’s not a topic most of us have knowledge about. Trafficking has been happening close to our homes, to our loved ones, peers, neighbors, and just about everywhere. Victims have been found working in

Page 18

Who’s In

Twelve teams are trying to make it into the postseason, and with that, only two teams would get the chance to play in a once in a lifetime Super Bowl 52, which takes place on February 4th. All thirty-two teams hope to get in the playoffs, but there will only be twelve selected. In the AFC conference, these teams are guaranteed a playoff spot right now, and a first round bye, which is the New England Patriots (7-2) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-2). While those teams are guaranteed a top spot in the playoffs, what with being predicted the first and second seed, these teams are leading their divisions with 6-3 records, which are the Kansas City Chiefs who are leading the AFC West and the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are currently leading the AFC South, which these two teams will be the third and fourth seed. Coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots has been saying “one game at a time and to move to the next game.” In the NFC the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings are the top two teams right now in the NFC but there are multiple teams like the New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Rams are 7-2, the Carolina Panthers are 7-3 and the Seattle Seahawks are 6-3. Any of these teams can be the first and sec-

ond seed and the others will fill the opening spots. Those teams are so far basically in the playoffs but what about the other teams? Well that is for fate to decide as teams like the Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions they will need to win out and hope that the teams with higher records lose which would give them a better shot at getting into the playoffs. For Baltimore and Oakland they would need Buffalo(5-4) and Tennessee(6-4) to both lose out the rest of the season. For Atlanta, Dallas and Detroit on the other hand would have a more difficult time because they would need Seattle(6-3) and Carolina(7-3) to both lose out the rest of the season or at least lose just enough for them to have a better record but Atlanta and Detroit would

have to win out. Teams like the Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Car-

Page 19

Marcos Facundo dinals, Los Angeles Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets have to hope for a miracle and cannot afford another loss or else they will never see the playoffs this year. They all have pretty tough schedules so that would mean they have to play a perfect game and can’t afford any injuries or mistakes. The Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and the New York Giants will have no chance at making the playoffs so they will be trying their hardest to ruin other teams dreams of going to the playoffs.
