CALL TO WORSHIP
Jodi Smith, Deacon of the Week
God of Grace, Mother of Hope, we pause now to remember the stories and contributions of Black people, stories that are all around us but so often passed over. God of Grace, forgive us for our neglect of those stories and our refusal to affirm that Black lives matter to you. Great God, help us to realize that in Black history we might see all of our histories. Great God, help us to see the day when Black history will be so widely taught that it cannot be contained in one month or in one service, in one book or in one class. We want to see this day, but we know that we can't until we make different choices. Help us to make different choices. Help us to make different choices, where the prison system becomes redemptive and not punitive. Help us to make different choices, where the legal system is more just and merciful. Help us to make different choices, where our schools are fully funded, our neighborhoods are restored, and our economies are fair. Help us to make different choices, reflecting the dignity you bestow on all your children. Give those who fear, courage. Those who fail, grace. Those who despair, hope. Those who mourn, comfort. And those who experience life on the bottom side of hate, a radical experience of your love. Amen. Congregation standing. La congregación se pone de pie. Congregational responses in bold. Audio enhancement devices available for use during worship. Please ask an usher for assistance.

Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18 Kathie Lansing
1The
Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy for I, the Lord your God, am holy… 9When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God. 11You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. 12And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the Lord. 13You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning. 14You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling-block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. 15You shall not render an unjust judgement; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. 16You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the Lord. 17You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. 1Habló
EPISTLE LESSON
1 Corintios/ 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23 Brayan Gonzalez
10Conforme
10According
to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ… 16Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. 18Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written: He catches the wise in their craftiness; 20and again: The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile. 21So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours, 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future— all belong to you, 23and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia Jacques Berthier (1923-1994) Miles Herr, Cantor
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Your Father in heaven makes the sun rise on both the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous alike. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! (Matthew 5, adapted) GOSPEL LESSON
Matthew/ Mateo 5: 38-48 Salima Appiah-Duffell
38You
have heard that it was said: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. 39But I say to you: Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. 43You have heard that it was said: You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. 38Oísteis
This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. HYMN We sing v.1 English, v.2 Spanish, v. 3 English, v.1 Spanish to conclude.

PRAYERS FOR CALVARY AND LORD’S PRAYER Reverend Zehyoue After the Pastoral Prayer, we invite everyone to pray the Lord’s Prayer in your native language. Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. The orchestra, with conductor Dr. Michael Shasberger, is participating in a festival at Kennedy Center this weekend. Westmont is a Christian liberal arts college in Santa Barbara CA, where Dr. Shasberger holds the Adams Chair of Music and Worship. Thanks to Westmont Orchestra for sharing your gifts at Calvary, and thanks to Cindy Petty at Music Celebrations International for organizing the tour and arranging their visit today.
CALVARY WELCOMES SIDWELL FRIENDS SCHOOL. Sidwell Friends, a Quaker school in DC, is organizing demonstrations and other activities to show solidarity with places of worship that might feel targeted in light of recent political events. “We appreciate your church’s commitment to equality and justice.” Welcome to Calvary, Sidwell Friends—we appreciate your support and partnership! WELCOME, PASTOR MARIA AND PASTOR SALLY. Today during Coffee Hour, be sure to sign up to participate in a good old fashioned pounding, to welcome Calvary’s new Senior Co-Pastors Sally and Maria on February 26! To participate in the pounding, church members bring non-perishable items for new pastors as they begin their service—the word comes from the tradition of bringing a pound of flour or a pound of sugar to share. Also at the welcome table, you’ll find a box to collect pounding items. Please join us in extending this tangible sign of welcome to Pastor Maria and Pastor Sally. On February 26, we’ll also express our deep gratitude to all the members of Calvary’s Ministerial Selection Committee—we appreciate your hard work and the resulting call of these fine pastors! BIENVENIDO, PASTORA MARIA Y PASTORA SALLY. WELCOME BOOK. Be sure to see Karla Fahey today during Coffee Hour if you’d like an updated photo to submit with your letter. Help us to welcome Pastors Sally and Maria as we put together a booklet of welcome letters and photos for their first Sunday on February 26! In order for them to get to know us better, write a letter of any length welcoming them to Calvary and providing some information about yourself, plus a recent photo. Send letters to Tim Shaw by February 22,
