The premier concert of the six new members of the Certificate of Merit Young Artist Guild was the highlight of Friday night at the music Teachers’ Association of California 2013 Convention “Musical Bridges Around the World.” These outstanding talented students performed an awe-inspiring evening of music from Bach to Lowell Liebermann. The six newest members of YAG represent Branches from both Northern and Southern California. There were three pianists, two from the North and one from the South, and two flutists and one violinist from the South. Young Artist Guild members are eligible for two scholarships based on essays and transcripts: the Don and Sue Natensted Family Fund, and the AMRON Dustin Kojii Jefferson Award. Jonathan Shao, Viola Chan, Tiffany Chung, Connie Chen and Jin Joo Hong received Natensted Awards. Viola Chan received the AMRON Award. The Christine Piper Plumb Award and the Samuel and Valerie Rodetsky Awards are based on the Friday night concert performance and determined by a Panel of three judges. The Plumb Award was awarded to Jin Joo Hong, and the Rodetsky was awarded to Jonathan Shao. In addition to these awards, all six new members received an award from the MTAC Foundation funded by membership donations to the YAG program. Information on presenting a Young Artist Guild concert for your branch is available on the MTAC website. If your branch needs financial assistance, your branch may apply for a branch grant. The branch grant application form is also available online. -continued to page 7

CM Registration: October 1-October 31, 2013. We suggest you create a phone tree to make sure all your teachers know about this change. The attached CM Council roster has all of our contact information and lists our new Council members. Please notice the new titles. We believe they are more descriptive of our jobs, and will help you find us more quickly. The Branch Chair of Policies and Forms will be posted in late August/early September. The specific date will be announced through email. There is only one policy change, and a few clarifications on current policies. CCSR’s have been re-assigned, so your branch may have a new CCSR. New this year -- if you have any questions about BFS/GER, please contact Peggy Taylor. There will not be a FileMaker update. Please remind teachers that they need to read and agree to the CM Registration Agreement before enrolling students in CM. If you would like a Council member to help with your CM meeting, schedule now! Remember there is no cost to the Branch. MTAC will cover our mileage. If you are a new Branch Chair, be sure to log in and update your Branch Info. and also contact your CM Council Branch Chair Liaison. Instrument Chairs or Representatives for your Branch are now required to be listed in the Database. In early September, I will announce procedures for locking teachers out of the Database, for those who did not attend the CM Meeting. Last but not least, please join me in welcoming the new Santa Monica Bay Branch!

Thanks for everything you do; we know that CM would not happen without you. Please remember that the Council is here to support you. Please email us at anytime for assistance. Regards,

Latin American and Spanish Music Convention Theme for 2013, 2014, and 2015

This exciting Theme topic is for Conventions in 2013, 2014, and (by popular request) 2015. The Theme includes music by composers who were born in or lived and worked primarily in South America, Central America, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain and Portugal. Here are a few composers to consider, though there are many more: Albéniz (Spain) Cervantes (Cuba) Chávez (Mexico) De Falla (Spain) Gianneo (Argentina) Ginastera (Argentina) Granados (Spain) Lecuona (Cuba) Mompou (Spain) Nazareth (Brazil)

Piazzolla* (Argentina) *arrangements and transcriptions of Piazzolla’s music are allowed

Pinto (Brazil) Ponce (Mexico) Seixas (Portugal) Soler (Spain) Turina (Spain)

Also, this includes music written in Latin American or Spanish style by composers of any nationality. Examples include Debussy and Ravel’s Spanish -themed music, pieces in Latin American or Spanish style by our current pedagogical composers, and compositions in Latin jazz style. There are many possibilities. Suggested reading: The California Music Teacher Summer 2011 issue (Vol. 34, Num. 3) has an article by Dr. Alejandro Cremaschi titled, “Beyond the Exotic: Teaching Latin American Piano Pieces,” which has helpful information about pedagogy, composers, and piano literature. Teachers should contact their branch CM Chair if there are any questions. Piano, Strings, Voice, Winds: Levels 3 – Advanced Harp: Levels 1 – Advanced 7-minute time limit 
