The 2017 PSR/Sacramento Scholarship Essay Contest is now open to high school seniors in Sacramento and surrounding counties (Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba). A total of $15,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to 12 students. The prompt for this year's contest, chosen by a vote of our members, is the following quotation by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education. To enter the contest, high school seniors must submit an original essay of 500 words or fewer describing their 2
thoughts about FDR's words. The deadline for essay submission is midnight on Saturday, March 11th, 2017. Students should submit their essays and contact information via the Scholarship Essay Contest Page of the PSR/Sacramento website. Full contest details and a flyer are attached. The 10 finalists will present their essays orally at a dinner on the evening of Sunday, April 30, at the DoubleTree by Hilton, 2001 Point West Way, in Sacramento, and a distinguished panel of judges from the community will select the first, second, and third place winners. The first place student will win a $3,000 scholarship, second place a $2,500 scholarship, and third place a $2,000 scholarship. SPORTS All Spring Athletes (softball, baseball, track and Golf) you must be cleared through Mrs. Coupe in the ASB office to participate in any practices beginning February 1st. If you are not cleared the coaches will be sending you home until you are cleared. Take the clearance slip to your coach on your 1st day of practice. The 2017 baseball season officially begins Wednesday, February 1st. From this date forward anyone who is interested in trying out for the baseball program and is currently not participating in a winter sport shall show up Feb 1st. All practices are mandatory from this date forward. Additionally, you must be officially cleared by Ms. Coupe. If you have not been cleared, you are still required to show up February 1st and speak to Coach Born. 3
