Factors Influencing Eighth Grade Math ISAT Passing Percentages in Northeast Illinois Schools by John Tomczak

Illinois’ high-stakes math testing is all about making the grade.

As teachers, administrators, and policy makers, we are responsible for maximizing our students’ math achievement.

If we don’t use research-based ways to maximize math achievement, test scores will plateau and schools won’t meet the federal mandate in 2014.

We want our students to continually improve and our schools to meet the NCLB mandate.

Explore with me the learning environment factors and their influence on math achievement.

I began by examination of ISBE Report Cards to identify learning environment factors.

Some learning environment factors chosen were classified as controllable factors.

Controllable factors are factors that school districts can exert some control over.

Controllable factors are independent variables in this linear regression analysis.

Nine controllable factors were selected to be included in this study.

Some learning environment factors chosen were classified as non-controllable factors.

Non-controllable factors are factors that school districts have no control over.

Non-controllable factors are independent variables in this linear regression analysis.

Nine non-controllable factors were selected to be included in this study.

The scope of this study was determined.

The scope included eighth grade students only.

Students in the northeastern Illinois counties of Cook (excluding Chicago Public Schools), DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will were used in this study.

The study focused on student passing percentages on the math portion of the ISAT test (this is the dependent variable of this study).

Learning environment factors were analyzed to identify factors that improved math achievement.

The controllable learning environment factors were analyzed for key factors.

The controllable factors selected for analysis were:

Pupil-to-teacher ratio Average class size Minutes of math per day Percentage of male teachers Teachers' average years of experience

Percent of teachers with M.A.s or higher Average teachers' salary Average Administrators' Salary 2005 Expenditure per student on instruction

Multiple linear regression analysis showed four controllable factors had no influence on the math passing percentage and these were eliminated. Percentage of male teachers Teachers' average years of experience Average teachers' salary 2005 Expenditure per student on instruction

Multiple linear regression analysis showed that five controllable factors have some influence on the math passing percentage. Pupil-to-teacher ratio Average class size Minutes of math per day Percentage of teachers with M.A.s or higher Average administrator salary

The non-controllable learning environment factors were analyzed for key factors.

The non-controllable factors selected for analysis were:

Percentage of white students Percentage of black students Percentage of Hispanic students Percentage of Asian students

Percentage of native students Percentage of multiracial students Percentage of low income students Mobility rate (percentage) Attendance rate (percentage)

Multiple linear regression analysis showed four non-controllable factors had no influence on math passing percentage and these were eliminated. Percentage of white students Percentage of Asian students Percentage of native students Percentage of multiracial students

Multiple linear regression analysis showed that five non-controllable factors have some influence on the math passing percentage. Percentage of black students Percentage of Hispanic students Percentage of low-income students Student mobility rate Student attendance rate

The controllable and non-controllable learning environment factors were combined and analyzed for key factors.

Multiple linear regression analysis was used on the combined controllable and non-controllable learning environment factors.

Multiple linear regression analysis showed these nine controllable and non-controllable factors had no influence on math passing percentage. Average class size Minutes of math per day Teachers with M.A.s or higher Average administrator salary

Percentage of black students Percentage of Hispanic students Percentage of lowincome students Student mobility rate Student attendance rate

Multiple linear regression analysis showed that Pupil-to-Teacher Ratio was the singular key factor linked to eighth grade math ISAT passing percentage.

Now we need strategies for using this key factor to improve math achievement.

How can colleges and universities help middle schools decrease their Pupil-to-Teacher Ratios?

How can high schools help middle schools decrease their Pupil-to-Teacher Ratios?

High school chapters of Future Teachers of America can provide help in math classrooms.

High school chapters of Future Educators of America can provide help in math classrooms.

Cooperative education, work-experience, internships, and other teaching introduction programs can provide help in math classrooms.

How can communities help middle schools decrease their Pupil-to-Teacher Ratios?

Retired teachers’ association can provide help in math classrooms.

Retired professionals’ organizations can provide help in math classrooms.

Part-time and stay-at-home parents with math backgrounds can help in math classrooms.

Questions, Comments?

Thank You Drs. Pelech & Zigmond.
