Read – Think – Pray 29 November - 3 December Prepared by: Angus Kelly

Monday

Psalm 122 Think:

Jerusalem was the location of the Temple; the Hebrew's main place of worship. The Psalmist reflects on being excited to go to worship, 'to the house of the Lord'. In John 4:21-24 Jesus is asked about the appropriate place to worship the Lord; he replies to the Samaritan woman that a time is coming when people will worship the Father in 'spirit and truth.' Isn't it exciting that we can worship the Lord wherever we are; because Jesus has opened the way for us?

Pray: Pray that this week will be a week of worship for you; that you will recognize God's presence in even the most simple and mundane moments of life; and that God will be able to use you to lead others to worship him.

Tuesday

'Salvation is near' in Paul's day was a way of saying that an army tasked with rescuing a village from seige or captivity was on its way; there is hope.

Hopefulness is a real gift; in Corinthians Paul reminds us that hope is very important - '...these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.' (1 Cor 13:13) Not as important as love, but part of the package. Hope is necessary to keep us from giving up on ourselves. What 'swords' in your life do you need to beat into 'plowshares'; and 'spears' into 'pruning hooks'?

Pray: Isaiah looks forward to a day when God will bring peace to the world; he will do that by judging and arbitrating between peoples and nations. Offer up your own personal conflicts and angriness to God as you pray; and ask that He would bring justice and peace to your heart - no matter how long it takes.

29 November - 3 December Prepared by: Angus Kelly

Most of us struggle with some form of sin in our lives; perhaps it is a form of addiction? Maybe an attitude? Greediness? Resentment? Salvation is near - you don't have to beat those things on your own, let God help.

Thursday Matthew 24:36-44 Think: At school, when teacher's left the classroom they wouldn't tell us when they were coming back. But they would warn us about what would happen if they came back and we weren't hard at work! Its hard not to read Matthew 24:36-44 without thinking of those negative associations; I think the gospel writer's expect us to be hopeful for the day of Christ's return and not fearful.

Pray: Pray that you would learn to live in hope of Christ's return and not in fear; if you have any reason to be afraid; pray about it, ask Jesus to help you and guide you into putting things right.

Again - in keeping with our theme of hopefulness; this is not something we should fear - it is something we should hope for. The fire of the Holy Spirit is a symbol of cleansing.

What 'swords' in your life do you need to beat into 'plowshares'; and 'spears' into 'pruning hooks'?

Pray that God will help to cleanse those parts of your life that are not in his will for you. Pray for the Spirit's power to help you become the person God created you to be.

Isaiah 2:1-5

John the Baptist is sometimes quite scary. He speaks of Jesus in what can seem to be quite frightening terms: 'He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.'

Think:

On some days waking up is hard work; on other days it is easier. In verse 11 Paul tells us that it is time to wake up from sleep, because salvation is near. I find it easier to get out of bed when I have some hope for the day ahead - and very difficult when the pile of tasks ahead of me seems overwhelming.
