Monday, February 4th *Pick up notebooks on back table *No late work accepted unless absent last week Agenda: Review Chemistry Final Warm Up Introduction to Cells

Today's Objectives:  1. Review macromolecules 2. Connect macromolecules to our  study of cells 3. Visualize the Inner Life of  Cells!

1

Warm Up: Describe the relationship between biochemical macromolecules and cells?

Wednesday, February 6th Business: What are you going to do with your clean slate? Agenda: Warm Up Cells in Perspective Cell Theory Egg-cellent Lab, pun intended! Cell Organelle Presentations

2

Warm Up: List as many parts of a cell as you can remember. What are their functions?

Key Ideas:  Inside living cells there is constant  activity.  A cell has many parts that work together  to accomplish the functions of life.  Each part of a cell consists of many  molecules that cooperate to accomplish  needed functions.    Molecules in eukaryotic cells are  organized into tiny organelles that perform  specialized functions inside of the cell.

Movement of substances into and out of the cell: Diffusion: the movement of substances from areas  of high concentration to low concentration. Osmosis: diffusion of water across a selectively  permeable membrane. Facilitated Diffusion: diffusion of larger  substances through a protein carrier.

Eggcellent Lab: an egg is an analogy for a cell Objective: use an egg to understand the processes of diffusion  and osmosis

CELL: 1. membranes 2. nucleus 3. cytoplasm 4. DNA

EGG: 1. membranes 2. air cell 3. shell 4. albumin 5. yolk 6. chalaza

7

Day 1: 1. Measure the outside circumference of the egg. 2.  Record measurements in your notebook . 3. Carefully put the egg into the jar (if there are any cracks you must use another egg.) 4. Cover the egg with white vinegar.

WarmUp: Based on your notes from the last class, which of the diagrams below shows osmosis and which shows diffusion?  describe one way the processes are the same and different...

LSI Today   Discuss Diffusion and Osmosis  Eggcellent Lab  Introduce Cell Analogy Project  Cell Organelle Presentations

9

Eggcellent Lab:  Day 2 1.  Pour vinegar off of the egg 2.  Handle your egg very gently!! 3.  Record the physical changes  in your egg  color, texture, etc. 4.  What do you think happened to the shell?  record your thoughts 5.  Remeasure the circumference of your egg 6.  Record your data in your science notebook 7.  Recover your egg with syrup

10

What happened to the shell? CaCO3 + CH3COOH  > CO2 + H2O + Ca(CH3COO)2 Shell    + Vinegar      >   Calcium Acetate

How did your egg change? What explains this change?
