Tool Box of George E. Buckhout George E. Buckhout of Poughkeepsie, was a shipbuilder, and a craftsman of fine ice yachts. He was the son of Jacob Buckhout and together, the father–son team built most of the fastest ice yachts of the day. “Buckhout” boats are coveted for their fine craftsmanship and elegant design. George Buckhout built FDR’s lateen-rigged ice yacht Hawk that you see here. He also built Kriss for John A Roosevelt. George was a competitive sailor of ice yachts and was known for his skilled hand on the tiller in many ice boat races. He was at the helm of Vixen in the Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant race of 1889. Vixen – an historic ice yacht that Buckhout did not build - can be see outside on the lawn. Jacob Buckhout was also a skilled racer and builder. He was one of the original members of the Poughkeepsie Ice Yacht Club, founded in 1861. He built many of the ice boats owned and raced by John A. Roosevelt, including Icicle, 4 time champion of the Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant race. Icicle can be seen on display at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston. Jacob Buckhout also built Whiff, described as “the Finest Ice Yacht in the world” by the Poughkeepsie Eagle in 1876. Whiff is also on display outside during this Expo. George Buckhout built boats, motorized ice yachts and iceboats through the 1920s. He died in Poughkeepsie in 1948. His toolbox contains many tools he used to construct iceboats, including planes and rigging tools. It was discovered a few years back in Poughkeepsie and acquired by HRIYC secretary Brian Reid.
