Equilibrium

Disequilibrium

Immediately the trailer supports Todorov’s theory of Equilibrium and disequilibrium.

This trailer does not show equilibrium again as this would reveal too much narrative to the audience and reveal the ending therefore defeat the object of watching it in a theatre, and that’s the aim of a film trailer, grabbing the audience and in effect make them want to watch it in a theatre.

Screenshot 1 shown here represents equilibrium (Normality, Happiness) but then the trailer then shows disequilibrium (Conflict)shown in screenshot 2 which then at the end typically becomes normal again (Equilibrium) with a few changes within horror often deaths or people hurt.

A Medium close up shot is shown reflecting the emotions of these characters showing something is wrong and informing the audience of the emotions and enabling them to feel and become invlolved with the characters as it shows something is wrong it is expressing the traits of a horror movie and introducing disequilibrium. This also brings Barthes enigma code forward as this is like a puzzle for the audience because as they are watching it brings forth questions as to what will happen?, why it will happen?, will these two shown on the screenshot confront Krueger? Thus making the audience want to watch the film in a theatre.

A medium close up shot is shown here it’s very dark and creepy this instils fear into the audience as the whole scene is set to frighten. You can see the claws of the killer and him on top of his victim this expresses sadisticness and emits the genre of horror fully. And shows the typical traits of a horror film a serial killer and the dectectives. This will fully appeal to the audience through the use of horror conventions for example the murderer on top of the victim showing superiority.

As this is shown immediately after the killer is revealed it shows this man here a policeman is investigating the murders by the killer the trailer is basically revealing parts of the narrative in order to grab the audience interesting them thus making them inquisitive as to what happens through all the film. This also brings forth binary opposites here portraying the killer (The Villain) and the detective (Hero) however the binary opposites are often used to reveal narrative and also it links with Todorov’s theory of disequilibrium, because often the binary opposites can be the cause for disequilibrium and conflict as there needs to be a cause for conflict. Here the villain is shown and walks through solid bars reflecting supernatural abilities and gives the film a creepy sense as this is no normal human murderer. This also attracts older audiences who like horror movies and supernatural elements within films.
