Kamloops: At the heart of it all Getting here is easy. By road, rail or air, Kamloops is a convenient destination. Four major highways converge in our city, providing easy access from all parts of BC, Alberta and Washington. The Kamloops Airport connects us to places farther afield with direct flights to and from the international gateways of Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Two passenger railways also make regular connections in Kamloops. And once you’ve arrived, you’ll find that everything is conveniently close. It’s easy to get around Kamloops by car, but we are also a great city to explore on foot, bike or public transit. This symbol designates dog friendly activities. Cover Story. Kamloops photographer Tyler Meade, whose photography graces our front cover, captured his daughter leaping over the makings, or perhaps the ruins, of her sand castle. “Life’s a beach and Kamloops has so many beautiful ones to choose from. One of Isi’s favorites, Overlander Beach Park, is conveniently located near the city centre with easy access and parking. During warm summer days the beach is a perfect getaway for young and old at heart. Pack your beach essentials, unplug and absorb the lifestyle a Kamloops summer has to offer. Remember to bring a big shovel; plenty of sand for a fortress awaits you!”

welcome to kamloops Here in the city where the rivers meet, the sun is a wellloved friend. With more than 2,000 hours of annual sunshine, we soak up its warmth and celebrate its endless bounties. Find your serenity here and breathe deep. Drink it in. We are fortunate to have two mighty rivers that flow through our city and become playgrounds each summer. Hundreds of nearby lakes await your line so launch your boat or just settle in along the shore and cast the day away – the famous Kamloops Trout will keep you busy. What’s your pleasure? Golf stretches long into the fall and begins the minute the snow melts. Our hiking trails range from simple to strenuous so trek through pine forests or traverse our storied
hoodoos and breathe in the flowering sage. Feel like you’ve stepped onto the set of an old Western? You’re not alone. Our countryside was made for the cinema. Bring the family along for the adventure; pack a bucket and shovel and make a castle along the rivers’ edge or finally lose those training wheels at McArthur Island Park – a lush gem in the heart of the city. Let loose your inner adventurer! Find out why some of the world’s best mountain bikers call Kamloops home. In winter, trade your bike for a snowboard or a pair of skis and experience one of our many sunlit runs. Bluebird days we call them and they are our claim to fame. You call it Kamloops, we call it home and we love to entertain. Whatever your reason for visiting and however you like to play, we have a vacation designed for you. Plant your feet and stay another day.
“Kamloops is my playground – diverse landscape, friendly people, unlimited real fun and great events.” – Lee Morris, Tourism Kamloops CEO
Which traveller type are you? The Official 2015 Vacation Planner is organized into colour-coded sections based on five different traveller types. Each section contains information relevant to that type of traveller. Find the one that suits you best or interests you the most or explore them all to fully enjoy your visit because you’ll want to stay another day! Family Vacationer – These are the golden years and these vacations provide points of true connectivity. Build indelible moments – laugh, learn and experience the wonders of the Thompson Valley with the ones you hold most dear. Vista Vacationer – Rarely without a camera (or paintbrush), you are always on the hunt for wide-open spaces and hidden escapes. You are a hunter of sorts, your weapon is your trusty camera and your aim is always the view beyond the next turn.
Arts & Culture – A vacation isn’t complete until you’ve immersed yourself in a place, learned its history and come to understand its unique features. Whether it’s an afternoon spent antiquing or an evening listening to live music, you are happiest discovering the hidden gems of each city that you tour. Outdoor Adventurer – Life is short and you are not prepared to squander a single second of it. Embrace and exhilarate in the moment. While some might be content on the sidelines,

your best memories come from taking risks and living each moment as if it were your last. Foodie – Every picture in your scrapbook is accentuated by a taste, a smell and the giddy anticipation that goes along with each new culinary adventure. reen spaces, dog parks, skate parks, water parks – what’s your pleasure? We love the outdoors and it shows, with hundreds of hectares of devoted parkland right in the heart of the city. Take the kids to Centennial Park and visit the goats and geese at the Little Farmer’s Petting Zoo and then burn off some excess energy at the nearby playground. In summer a trip to Albert McGowan Park is essential, as the popular water park will keep the whole family chilled out. Another, smaller water park can be found at McDonald Park on the city’s north side. Tucked into the shade this park also features tennis courts, a wheelchair accessible playground and plenty of green space. While you’re on the North Shore visit McArthur Island Park. A nine-hole golf course and mini golf are tucked into the western edge of the park while a playground and skatepark call the eastern edge home. Soccer and baseball

BC Wildlife Park: Winter or summer, the BC Wildlife Park is full of fun, family-friendly activities. In winter watch the park come alive with the 18th annual Wildlights Festival. The park is open year round and is an excellent place to learn about the many animals that call western Canada home, including wolves, cougars, moose, black and grizzly bears and many small mammals, snakes and spiders. Kids love brushing the goats at the Family Farm Petting Zone. The Zippity Zone Playground and neighbouring splash park ensure hours of entertainment for the whole family. Be sure to visit Clover, an orphaned Kermode Bear (also called a Spirit Bear) that became too comfortable around humans and was relocated to our park. Clover is one of only 120 of its kind in the world. Hot Nite in the City: Eleven city blocks in Kamloops’ downtown transform into an epic stage in August for some of the most stunning and eclectic vehicles to take to the road. Victoria Street is lined with everything from vintage vehicles to street rods, muscle cars and some of the gnarliest custom motorcycles to ever see asphalt.

Cowboy Festival: If you thought the cowboy lifestyle was a thing of the past, think again. The BC Cowboy Heritage Society presents the 19th annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival from March 12 to 15. The festival is known far and wide as the largest showcase of western heritage in Canada. Let the traditional cowboy poetry and music sweep you away to a simpler time and place. Tunnel Tours: Unique to Kamloops each October, Tranquille Farm Fresh offers tours of the tunnel system beneath the former Tranquille King Edward Sanatorium. The tunnels were originally built to provide underground access to the large, rambling community but despite the benign intent, after years of disuse, myths about them have become legendary. Stay another day and discover if the tunnels are truly haunted. Music In the Park: Every night, from July 1 to August 31, Riverside Park comes alive with the sound of music. Sponsored by British Columbia Lottery Corporation and the City of Kamloops, the nightly event features music from all genres and best of all it’s free and family friendly. Paul Lake Provincial Park is a favourite haunt for locals. Camp overnight or just spend a day splashing and playing along the sandy shore. (on leash) Lac Le Jeune. Lac Le Jeune has the largest campground. Explore the lake by canoe, listen for the call of the loons every evening and take part in many of the interpretive programs that occur throughout the summer. (on leash) Lac du Bois Grasslands: A legacy of the Ice Age, these rolling grasslands are interspersed with jaw dropping cliffs and canyons where deep forests of Ponderosa Pine give way to Trembling Aspen and Douglas Fir. Bring binoculars as a multitude of small and medium-sized lakes provide habitat for waterfowl and as soon as the grasslands begin blooming in June, songbirds and other wildlife come out to play. (on leash) Wells Gray Park: A person could spend an entire summer discovering Wells Gray Park and still only just scratch its surface. The 5,250 square kilometres of terrain offers up everything a family of adventurers could ever desire. Hike to picture perfect Helmcken Falls or paddle Murtle Lake. he Thompson-Okanagan is blessed with four distinct seasons and some would argue that winter is the best season of all. Whether your pleasure runs to carving a path in piles of fresh powder at one of western Canada’s top ski hills or cross-country skiing by the light of the moon, Kamloops has something for everyone. Endless, well-mapped and accessible snowmobile terrain is all within easy reach and guided tours are a great way to get a fantastic start to your ideal winter vacation. Though sunny skies reign supreme in these parts, when night falls and the mercury goes with it, head indoors and help cheer on the home team at a Blazers hockey game or snuggle fireside at a local lounge and spend the evening soaking up the atmosphere. Whichever season you arrive and whatever the weather, go ahead and stay another day. “Love the Thompson River in winter time. Closer to Kamloops is Harper Mountain which boasts 16 runs and night skiing. A fantastic family-friendly hill, Harper is 20 minutes from city limits. Snowmobiling: Drink in those views! Rolling hills, powder and perfectly placed trees – it’s as though someone created the Kamloops landscape with the snowmobiler in mind. Kamloopa Powwow – Kelly Funk
T
he name Kamloops is the English translation of the Shuswap word Tk’emlúps, meaning ‘where the rivers meet,’ and for centuries has been the home of the Tk’emlupsemc, ‘people of the confluence.’ Tk’emlúps has always occupied a place of great economic importance in our region. Traversed by two major waterways, traditional Tk’emlupsemc territory was the centre of major traffic and trade routes. Kamloopa Powwow: Kamloops has been home to the largest celebration of First Nations culture and heritage in western Canada for more than 35 years. For one weekend in August the arbour on the Tk’emlups Indian Band comes alive with singing, drumming and dancing. A spectacle of colour and of history that connects people to this ancient and beautiful culture is a thrilling, family-friendly summer highlight.
Secwepmec Museum & Heritage Park: The Secwepmec people settled in this region more than 2,000 years ago and the land has long provided ample bounty. Explore the rich culture of our first people. Listen as practiced guides tell their stories and hear the truth resonate in their legends. Make your way through a centuries-old Shuswap winter pit house and summer village, and book a tour of the Ethnobotanical Gardens – www.secwepmecmuseum.com

gritourism is a truly memorable way to get to know local people, their culture and get up close to delicious unprocessed foods. Feel country life with your hands, taste the delicious extractions from the land, hear the soft and soothing sounds of wind-blown grass, hear farm animals calling to one another and – best of all – allow the sweet air to take over your mind and stay another day. Farmers’ Market: Taste the difference local makes. Open each year from mid-April to the end of October, the market is the best place to purchase your staples – fresh, seasonal fruit and veggies along with sustainably harvested salmon and locally raised beef, chicken and lamb. April showers bring May flowers, so drop by and gather blooms galore. Bedding plants, vegetable starters and arts and crafts are just a few items up for grabs throughout the year. Bring the whole family and treat the little ones to a smiling cookie from a local bakery or a freshly squeezed glass of lemonade. The hours of the market are 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Saturday) along the 200 block of St. Paul Street while the Wednesday market runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the south side of the 400-block of Victoria Street. A bell marks the opening and closing hours. Tranquille Farm Fresh Market is housed in the historic calf barn on the Tranquille on the Lake property and offers produce grown and harvested on the neighbouring acreage. Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. you will find everything from local honey to local grain and even locally roasted coffee. Farm2Chefs: Get your graze on. Sold out every year, the Farm2Chef Grazing Event offers unrivalled opportunity to feast on gourmet fare lovingly produced by area farmers and ranchers and skillfully (and artfully) prepared by renowned local chefs. All proceeds from the event go back to Farm2Chef, a local cooperative aiming to strengthen links between area producers and chefs. Ribfest: Be warned – you will get messy. Each August, some of the best barbecuers in North America descend on Riverside Park and dole out thousands of pounds of ribs over the course of one hot and delicious weekend. Ribbers are vying for the top prize as chosen by customers. An event perfect for all the foodies in the family, the young ones will enjoy the bouncy castles and live music while the older ones will enjoy a little down time in the beer gardens.

Wine Tasting & Touring
K
amloops and the Thompson Valley provide terrific opportunities for sampling new taste sensations in western Canada. Our Flavours Trail follows product makers around the city and region. To discover more on flavour tasting the Thompson, visit our website at tourismkamloops. com/flavours. Experience the wine trails in a safe and enjoyable manner and book with one of Kamloops’ local wine and brew tour companies and stay another day. If your ideal vacation involves sipping on a glass of wine while staring out at some of the most impressive scenery in British Columbia, you’ve come to the right place. Not your typical viticultural area, Thompson Valley winemakers are proving that it is possible to produce large yields of flavourful wine. The city now boasts four wineries with well-stocked tasting rooms.
WINE SHOP
Harper’s Trail was the first winery in Kamloops and is located east of the city on the bank of the South Thompson River. Having now released a few vintages, there is a noticeable wine style emerging; one that shows gorgeous minerality and crisp acidity that reflects the region. At nearby Sagewood Winery, you can taste wines made from the oldest commercial vineyard in Kamloops. With the initial planting in 2005 wines are produced from mature vines expressing the unique terroir in the Kamloops area. They’re both located 15 minutes east of downtown on East Shuswap Road.
TASTING ROOM HOURS
Privato Vineyard and Winery, meanwhile, is a family-run, 80-acre farm along the North Thompson River in Westsyde offering two varieties – Chardonnay and award-winning Pinot Noir.

Monte Creek Ranch offers the next frontier in winemaking. Located 30 km east of Kamloops the ranch aims to follow in the footsteps of the area’s early explorers and uncover what the land can offer – lively table wines with legend-in-the-making Thompson Valley brightness.

Make it a complete tour and head out to the Shuswap region. A unique group of British Columbia wineries is located in this most northern grape growing area of North America. Celista Estate winery is located on a 160-acre property in Celista, north of Shuswap Lake. The idyllic location has produced wines that have racked up 23 medals in national and international wine competitions. Recline Ridge is known for its award-winning quality-products, offering a range of coolclimate, fruit-forward white wines. It is located just off Highway 1 in Tappen, BC. For something a little different, head west to Cache Creek and tour the Bonaparte Bend winery which features 12 varieties of fruit wine – everything from apricot to Saskatoon berry. Near Lillooet discover Fort Berens Estate Winery which is planted on a sagebrush-covered bench at the foot of the mountains in the Fraser Canyon, deep in what was the heart of gold mining country.
Brew & Cider Tour The Noble Pig is Kamloops’ first craft brewer and offers up seven varieties of barley pop, from Honey Badger Pale Ale to Fascist Pig Pilsner. Lift a glass or grab a growler. There are plenty of cozy beds within easy walking distance so go ahead and order another round. Red Beard Roasters is just a hop, skip and jump across the South Thompson River or 5 minutes from downtown. So successful at roasting beans, a micro brewery was launched on the premises in 2014. With a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff, some are saying Red Beard has the best and always changing craft beer selection in Kamloops.

Red Collar Brewing is the latest venture from David Beardsell who has been a partner in several breweries including Bear Brewing and The Noble Pig in Kamloops. Now flying solo, the Beardsells opened Red Collar in 2014 and are offering a variety of craft beers in bottles, growlers and by the glass in an 80-seat tasting room and retail store. Crannog Ales offers certified organic ales created in traditional Irish fashion from its brewery in Sorrento. While brew tours are by appointment only several Kamloops restaurants offer the old-world ales, so enjoy some Insurrection IPA or a pint of Back Hand of God Stout – just two of about a dozen brews that have been created on site. Left Field Cider Co. truly is a family affair. Coming out of left field comes a handcrafted English-style cider crafted in the heart of the interior. This traditional cider comes in three varieties – Big Dry, Little Dry and Cidermaker’s Select. Located between Merritt and Logan Lake a trip to the cider house is a must. The tasting room is open all summer long and it is a tasty place to get out and stretch your legs. /tourismkamloops
