Students participating in Mrs. Hunsinger’s Early Childhood classes recently spent time talking with LC’s nutrition director about the nutrition requirements and healthy meal pattern. The discussion was lengthy, and many students had questions regarding the implications of the new Smart Snacks in the school store. More importantly, the students gained a better understanding of the purpose of the SBP as well as the NSLP.
What’s New?
This year the School Nutrition Department is proud to announce it is now serving LOCAL GOLDKIST/PILGRIM’S PRIDE chicken in all our cafeterias. Also, macaroni and cheese is back on the menu and meets USDA guidelines.
Fitness for students is important, and it is just as important for teachers and staff too. The wellness committee is working diligently to present a wellness opportunity for the teachers and staff to improve and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Nutrition and Disease…
Years ago, diabetes was a disease that mainly was associated with older and less active adults. Today, the disease is more prevalent in adolescents than ever before. As a result, the HHFKA of 2010 addresses these issues. The popularity of “super sized” meals and activities, such as video gaming and social media browsing, that are more sedentary have contributed to the increase of prevalence of diabetes in adolescents. Make it a goal everyday to spend at least 30 minutes involved in some form of physical activity.
Nutrition…In the Media!
October 13-17, 2014 was National School Lunch Week. We encourage all our students, teachers, staff and parents to eat in our lunchrooms. Our managers and staff work really hard to prepare meals that are not only healthy but also pleasing. We value your participation and look forward to having you in our cafeterias. Moreover, our chicken, ground beef, and other meat products are cooked NOT warmed fresh in our kitchens daily. Have you tried our yeast rolls?
LC Kitchens receive exemplary scores…
Every year, each LC school kitchen receives 2 health inspections to insure that safety measures are maintained. Many managers and workers begin their day around 5:45am and work hard to make sure your meals are hot and ready as you arrive for school, while maintaining a certain level of cleanliness above the standard. This school year, we are happy to announce that all 5 schools have received 100s on their health inspections. Please join me in congratulating our staff on a job well done!
