Truth Momentum—Part 32 November 14/15, 2015 Acts 19:1-20 FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 19:1 The term “disciple” does not always refer to Christians: Pharisees had disciples (Mark 2:18; Luke 5:33). John the Baptist had disciples (Matthew 9:14; 11:2; Luke 5:33; 7:18–19; 11:1; John 1:35; 3:25). Even Jesus had disciples who were not saved (John 6:66). 2) 19:2 Paul’s question tells us that true belief and the presence of the Holy Spirit always go together. 3) 19:4 The real deficiency was not their baptism but that they failed to know Jesus as Savior. 4) 19:5 The natural response for a believer is to be baptized. 5) 19:6 The purpose of tongues is to overcome unbelief and was a sign to unbelievers. (1 Corinthians 14:22). 6) 19:8 Boldness was Paul’s hallmark. His content was uncompromisingly confrontational; he held back nothing. 7) 19:9 When truth is rejected repeatedly, it hardens the heart. It does not happen overnight. 8) 19:11 Because Ephesus was deep in superstition, Luke carefully distinguished between diseases and afflictions caused by evil spirits, making it clear that not all illness stems from demonic activity. 9) 19:11 The miracles God performed through Paul were essential to convince the Ephesians that he was from God. 10) The weapon we are to unleash in our battles with forces of darkness is “…the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). 11) 19:13 Seeing the potency of Jesus’ name, the exorcists decided to add it to their back of tricks, treating Jesus’ name as a charm.
12) 19:14 The difference between the exorcists and Paul was that Paul actually had a relationship with the Individual they named. Paul had God’s power delegated to him. 13) 19:16 When people treat the things of Jesus and the realm of the Spirit world carelessly, there is a severe price to pay. 14) 19:17 The name of Jesus encompasses all that is true about Him. It is the name of Jesus that brings clarity and truth, bringing life to those who have been mislead. It is the name of Jesus that brings power, freeing those who are captive to the world of darkness. It is the name of Jesus that brings forgiveness to you of all your sin.
Ask yourself: Do I have the BASIC TRADEMARKS OF A BELIEVER? Galatians 5:22-23
Do I have a greater passion for the things of Jesus? Do I have a greater love for God's word? (Is it making more sense to you…?) Is prayer increasing in importance to you? Are you more concerned for those who do not know Jesus? Are you experiencing a greater boldness in talking about Jesus?
