Read the following passage carefully and answers the questions that follow : True religion is entirely based on the union of speech and mind. If true religion is the union of mind and speech, true religion stands on four main pillars. They are : Truthfulness, Renunciation, Purity and Love. Truthfulness is the practice of speaking what is true. It is giving an accurate picture of a fact experienced by you. A story is told about Yudhisthira’s practicing truthfulness. He, along with his brothers and Duryodhana’s hundred brothers, studied under Dronacharya. Once Dronacharya said, “Anger is the greatest enemy of man. All of you must practice to control anger. Remember, these two sentences carefully and come tomorrow. I shall ask you to repeat it before me.” The next day when all the pupils came, Dronacharya asked, “Have you remembered yesterday’s lesson ?” All except Yudhisthira repeated the two sentences correctly. He said, “I am not able to practice the lesson”. He got an admonishment from Dronacharya. Dronacharya asked Yudhisthira to remember the lesson and repeat it the next day. The next day Yudhisthira gave the negative answer. Dronacharya got angry and slapped him several times. Yudhisthira controlled his anger and said, “Now I can repeat my lesson.” Dronacharya again got furious and asked, “You, foolish fellow, just now you said you have not remembered the lesson, and now after getting slaps, you said you have remembered the lesson. How is it ?” Yudhisthira said humbly, “Sir, you taught us to control anger. Before you slapped me I was not able to control anger. But after being slapped, I did not react and controlled anger. I thought I had practiced my lesson and told you that I have remembered the lesson.”

Translate the following passage into Gujarati or Hindi : Swamiji gave Indians proper understanding of their country’s great spiritual heritage and thus gave them pride in their past. Furthermore, he pointed out to Indians the drawbacks of Western culture and the need for India’s contribution to overcome these drawbacks. Swamiji’s most unique contribution to the creation of new India was to open the minds of Indians to their duty to the downtrodden masses. Long before the ideas of Karl Marx were known in India, Swamiji spoke about the role of the labouring classes in the production of the country’s wealth. Swamiji was the first religious leader in India to speak for the masses, formulate a definite philosophy of service, and organize large-scale social service. OR

Make a précis of the following passage and give a suitable title to it. Speech is a great blessing, but it can also be a great curse, for while it helps us to make our intentions clear and desires known to our fellows, it can also, if we use it carelessly, make our attitude completely misunderstood. A slip of the tongue, the use of an unusual word or of an ambiguous word, and so on, may create an enemy where we had hoped to win a friend. Again different classes of people use different vocabularies, and the ordinary speech of an educated man strike an uneducated listener as showing pride. Unwittingly we may use a word which bears a different meaning to our listener from what is done to men of our class. Thus speech is not a gift to use lightly without thought, but one which demands careful handling. Only a fool will express himself alike to all kinds and conditions of men. 5.
