Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of DGE George Tyson who died June 17, 2016. Rotary Club of Pentagon City (VA) Rotary Club, District 7610. He was to serve District 7610 as Governor in 2016-17. Obituary George James Tyson Jr. passed away June 17, 2016. Born December 22, 1943 in Worcester, Massachusetts to George James Tyson and Katharine Veronica Seery, he grew up in Taunton Massachusetts. He attended Boston College, graduating in 1965 with a BA in Economics and then attended Harvard University, graduating in 1972 with an MBA. While at Harvard, he met his beloved wife Susan Veda Langerhans, whom he married on May 27, 1972, recently celebrating their 44th anniversary. He entered the United States Navy in 1965, where he served on active duty, including a tour in Vietnam, for 14 years in a variety of afloat, ashore, and overseas logistics management assignments. He served for 11 years in the Naval Reserve during which time he commanded two naval reserve units and retired with the rank of Captain. After graduating from the Naval War College in Newport RI, he was invited to join the faculty and taught Systems Analysis. While in Newport, he was also an adjunct professor at Salve Regina University where he taught corporate financial management. Upon leaving the active duty Navy, he joined American Management Systems, leading teams of Information Technology (IT) professionals on both coasts in designing, developing, and deploying IT applications. In 1991, he co-founded Hyperion, Inc. and over the last 25 years, he and his business partner built it from a two person organization to one with a world-wide customer base. George was an active member of Rotary International, and was president of the Pentagon City Rotary club during 2007-2008 during which time the club received numerous awards including the Rotary International Presidential Citation, District 7610 Governor's Citation, and recognition as best medium sized club in the district. Subsequently, he served as an Area Foundation Advisor, District RLI Chair and District Trainer. He was District Governor Elect of District 7610 at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary Ellen King. He is survived by his daughter Sarah, of Arlington, Virginia; his daughter Amy and husband Rob McDowell of Virginia Beach, Virginia; his brother Gregory and wife Justy of Bolivia, South America; his sister Kathy Macomber of Taunton Massachusetts, his sister Cheryl and husband Alan Seager of
Dallas, Texas; his mother-in-law Glenys Langerhans of Arlington, Virginia; his brother-in-law Paul and wife Pat Langerhans of Kearneysville, West Virginia; his best beloved feline pal Punky; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. George will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with details being posted when they are known.
RLI Faculty Bio George Tyson is the CFO of Hyperion, Inc., a computer systems integration firm which he cofounded in 1991 and co-owns. In the early days of the company, he did everything from bookkeeper to CEO, and from cable puller to lead software engineer. He received a BA in Economics from Boston College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served 14 years in the U.S. Navy, another 11 in the Naval Reserve, and 11 years as a senior executive with computer systems firms before founding Hyperion. A member of the Rotary Club of Crystal City-Pentagon in Arlington, VA since joining Rotary in 2001, he currently serves as Chesapeake Multi-District PETS Executive Trainer in addition to his work with RLI. He is a Past President of his club, was an Area Foundation Advisor, District 7610 RLI Chair, District 7610 Trainer, and is a Foundation Major Donor, Benefactor, and Paul Harris Society member. He was recently selected to serve as District 7610 Governor for 20162017. George has served on several non-profit boards. As Finance Committee Chair and then as Chairman of the Board of the Alexandria Country Day School, he rescued the school from insolvency and then personally managed a $2 million bond issue which enabled the school to purchase a permanent campus. He was also a founding board member of the Commonwealth Academy, a grade 3-12 school which specializes in educating learning disabled children. As a cancer survivor, he has volunteered with a support group which helps newly diagnosed patients deal with a life-threatening illness and the various treatment options which must be selected. George and his wife, Sue, have lived in Arlington, VA for over 25 years. One daughter lives nearby in Arlington and the other in Virginia Beach, VA.
