1:1 Technology, the iPad, and Decision Making What are the technology devices that will be given? All students in grades 3-5 will be receiving an iPad Air, power cord, power charger, and a Griffin Survivor iPad Air Case. Why did we decide on using the Apple iPad as the 1:1 device of choice for students and teachers? Beginning in the fall of the 2013/14 school year, GCSC began researching different devices. The devices that were looked at were the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, Google Nexus, Apple iPad, Microsoft Surface, Google Chromebook, and a Dell Laptop. A thourough process was completed and the Apple iPad was chosen as the best device for the Middle School and High School for the 2014-15 school year. In the spring of 2015, a select group of Intermediate Teachers followed a similar process for selecting a device which included examining different devices and visiting other schools who were using 1:1 devices. Ultimately, the Apple iPad met the most criteria and had the most curriculum support to become the device that GCSC will use to implement a 1:1 digital environment at Tzouanakis. Have we studied other school systems that have implemented a 1:1 environment for several years? Have we asked the hard questions such as, "What would you do differently?”
Yes, we have visited several school districts that are currently participating in a 1:1 initiative. The devices of these initiatives ranged from iPads, iPods, MacBook Airs, MacBooks, Lenovo Tablets, and Windows laptops. We have also met with many other school systems while attending workshops and conferences. We have attended workshop with other school corporations that have deployed the iPad Air successfully for several years. Our assistant superintendent also participated in Apple Leadership and Learn seminars with panels of superintendents and teachers who have implemented their own 1:1 environments.
iPad Costs and Protection Plan Greencastle Community School Corporation has been planning 1 to 1 technology for the past four years. In each year’s budget funds have been transferred to the corporation’s rainy day and technology funds for the installation of infrastructure and purchase of the student devices. We have leased the iPad Air devices on a three year lease that costs the district approximately $57,000.00 per year for the three years. The first year of the lease has been paid via textbook rental, rainy day funds and technology funds in capital projects. Parents will be paying part of the lease each year through textbook rental funds to prepare for year two and three of the lease. As we did not purchase new English and World Language books we are making all attempts to keep textbook rental affordable for all parents. The State of Indiana will only allow us to collect 25% per year, so we need to continue to make efforts to set aside funds in the rainy day account to offset shortfalls. In the next three years we will be phasing out social studies, science and math books to be even more financially responsible with the deployment of the technology. At the end of the three year lease the corporation will have the ability to trade in the current iPads for the next model cutting the second lease price from the start. It is most likely that we will sell them back to Apple if we go with Apple again. Current market prices show between $75.00 to $150.00 per device for the buyback program of older models of the iPad. They seem to hold value over four to five years. We are currently in progress of locating a iPad repair store, locally instead of going with the Apple Care for TZ iPads. We are checking to see if it is more economical to have local repairs rather than shipping the iPad off to Apple to repair. More details are coming as we conclude negotiations. This change could save parents up to $100 per year of the lease cost. What happens if an iPad is lost, stolen or damaged? Should an iPad be damaged, lost, or stolen the student or parent/guardian should immediately notify the school administration. If an iPad is stolen the student/guardian should file a police report as soon as possible. If the iPad is lost, stolen, or totally damaged as a result of irresponsible behavior, the parent may be responsible for the full replacement cost. The lost or stolen iPad Air will be disabled electronically by the GCSC Technology Team. If the
iPad Air is deemed unrecoverable the iPad Air memory will be remotely wiped so that no one can access the data or personal information on the iPad device. What happens if an iPad charging block and/or charging cord is lost, stolen, or damaged? Should an iPad charging block and/or charging cord become lost, stolen, or damaged, the student/parent will need to replace it. When the student returns the school issued equipment at the end of the year, it will need to be the Apple brand that was issued. Here is the link for the charging block and the charging cable. What happens if a student leaves GCSC during the school year? Students will be required to return their assigned iPad along with the case, power adapter, and cord. If the iPad is found to be in good working order only showing normal wear and tear, nothing else will be needed from the student. Any iPad not returned to GCSC upon leaving will be considered theft and reported to area law enforcement.
Cases & Keyboards Will students be given a case? Yes. GCSC looked at many different cases and chose the Griffin Survivor Case for the iPad Air. Students are not allowed to use their own case. The assigned case must remain on the iPad for protection. Students are not allowed to change the case for a model that they purchase. If there is a special situation, please discuss it with building administration or Teachers of Record and we will consider special situations. Any other case considered will have to meet basic requirements for protection of the iPad device. Will students be provided with a keyboard? GCSC will NOT provide students with a keyboard. While attending other 1:1 deployments, it was determined that student use of keyboard devices was extremely low. GCSC will, however, have keyboards available for teachers to check out for their class if it is determined a need by the teacher for the given assignment. Can I use a keyboard with my iPad, either Bluetooth or hardwired? Yes - feel free to purchase and setup a keyboard with your district provided iPad and case. However, please know that your students iPad will not be coming home at the beginning of the year. Hardwired keyboards will work the best but Bluetooth may be used. Just remember that your Bluetooth keyboard, when searching, will be able to see about 4500 other iPad devices. If you choose a Bluetooth connection, please set it up at home before bringing it to school to
minimize connection problems.
Textbooks Is GCSC going to replace textbooks with digital content? We are currently in a period of transition from sole dependency on textbooks to a digital environment that allows access to a much greater range of educational materials and experiences. Certain printed textbooks will still be available during this transition period. Over time, we will be adopting digital resources to use on the iPad across all content areas. All print texts that we currently own will still be available until they wear out over time. The Media Center materials will stay in place and the collection of print books will continue to be managed and added to in the same way that they have been in the past. Will all books be available on the iPad? No. Some textbooks will be accessible through an app created by the textbook company, others will be accessible through the textbook web site, and, of course, some may not be available electronically. Most major textbook publishers are transitioning to digital textbooks and materials. GCSC teachers are currently developing digital content that will eventually replace most published textbooks. Interestingly enough, the cost of a digital textbook is currently set at the same price as a printed textbook, only they do not print or ship the book to the school. This is one reason that we will be growing our own digital content and become less dependent on the big textbook companies to deliver content to us. We believe that our curriculum and resources will be stronger and more directly connect to the Standards expected by the Indiana Department of Education. What different types of textbooks exist for the iPad? There are e-textbooks (textbooks converted to be read digitally) and iTextbooks (textbooks that have interactive videos, content and widgets). The Apple Corporation has a vast catalog of text materials created for kindergarten through graduate school on iBooks and iTunes University. We will use these resources for intervention through enrichment to challenge all of our students at their individual levels.
iPad Roll-Out When will students be issued an iPad? TZ students will be receiving their iPads during the first full week of school if the Responsible Use Policy was signed during the registration window.
May students use their own personal iPad? No. GCSC will be providing students in grades 3-5 with the iPad Air. Due to network configurations and managing the devices, students will not be able to use their own device. The only way to manage 450 iPad Air devices (in addition to the 1100 more at GMS and GHS) in a constant and safe manner is for them to come from the same source. May students take the iPad home? Initially, no. As we expand our 1:1 environment to include Tzouanakis Intermediate, we feel that we will be most successful if we transition to having students taking devices home. We will establish benchmarks and learning targets for all grade levels and assess students' readiness before we allow students to take the iPad home. Our goal is that students will be able to continue learning while away from the classroom. The iPad is a personal device and allows students to store notes, handouts, books, instructional videos, and a large variety of other applications that are designed to help students with mastery of course content and skills. The use of the device outside of school gives students access to all of their materials all the time. Students will be required to bring the devices back to school daily, fully charged, and ready for the day. Will students keep the iPads during school breaks? If we have allowed students to take devices home, we will still collect them at the end of the school year. Additionally, if there are any issues with upgrades or managing the devices, our technology team may have students turn the devices in during breaks so they can be serviced. Will the iPad belong to the student? No. The iPads are the property of the Greencastle Community School Corporation. Students are leasing the iPads just as the student rents the textbooks that he/she is issued. Will students be able to take the devices home over the summer? No. Limiting summer use will help to ensure that the batteries last the full three years of the lease. Where can I learn more about the iPad? You can learn about the iPad directly from Apple: visit http://www.apple.com/ipad. You can also periodically check the technology page on the district website for updated tutorials. What happens when new iPad models come onto the market? The current cycle for the iPads is three years. Before the end of our three-year cycle, we will
look at all new options available at that time.
Digital Citizenship How will my son/daughter learn about digital citizenship? Digital citizenship lessons will be incorporated throughout the 2015-16 school year. Topics will include iPad basics and internet safety. Any questions may be directed to our Technology Integrator or may be answered by visiting www.commonsense.org.
iPad in the Classroom Does my student have to use an iPad? Just as textbooks have been essential to learning for students, the iPad will be the textbook of the new generation. We are excited that it will fit into a backpack more easily and weigh our students down less. Educational resources and content can be delivered via the iPad. This makes the iPad a necessity for every student’s education. The 1:1 program also brings individual learning to students and provides the ability to “connect” with their peers, their teachers, and the world. Do we have to have internet access at home? No. Students will be able complete homework assignments at home and turn in their work when they return to school the next day. However, while not required, internet access at home will assist students in conducting research and collaborating with teachers and classmates outside of the classroom. Is GCSC providing an internet carrier for home use? No, but in certain attendance areas Comcast Essentials is available to GCSC free or reduced lunch students for $9.95 a month. We are also providing local stores and businesses who share their wifi connections with our students a sign that they can display with their password to let our students know that they support our 1:1 initiative. Look for the Tiger Cub Paw Print with a wifi connection symbol over it that proudly says, “We are proud to support the Greencastle Community School Corporation by providing free Wifi!” If I already have an internet provider at home, will my student be able to use our service with the school’s device? Yes, provided that you also own a WiFi router. We will assist students in setting up their devices to switch from the school’s internet access to the internet provider at home. To protect students, which ever wifi connection that a student connects to, their iPad signal will go
through our safety filter at all times. We believe this is important to keep our students safe. How do we access our personal internet via the iPad at home? Verify that Wi-Fi is enabled and that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. Tap settings > Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is off, turn it on by tapping the on/off icon. Available Wi-Fi networks appear under “Choose a network.” Your network should appear. You will need to enter the network password or WEP key for your router. Will my child use the iPad in every course? The iPad will be the student’s tool to use at school. We expect that how it is used will vary based on subject area. Each of our teachers is setting up an online environment on Canvas, a learning management system, that will allow them to post class notes, assignments, etc. The expectation is that the iPad will be utilized in all subjects and courses. What if a student forgets to bring the iPad to school? If students fail to bring their device to school, they are responsible for completing course work as though they had their device with them. Students are expected to bring their charged iPad to school everyday, along with any of their other materials. The iPad will be treated as textbooks and materials have been in the past. Appropriate consequences may be issued by the teacher or assistant principal for failing to be prepared. I am concerned that my iPad battery will not last for the entire school day. What should I do? One of the reasons we chose the iPad is that unlike laptop batteries, when fully charged, the iPad can run for up to 10 hours. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the device is fully charged before school each day. Normally it takes two to three hours for the device to go from 0% to 100% charged. The approximate cost of electrical bills to charge an iPad over the course of a school year is $1.45. Classrooms will also be provided with power strips for charging during use or non-use. The student will need to responsibly use the device.
Device Management How will you manage the devices? We will utilize a mobile device management suite called Filewave. It allows us to register each student’s device to our server, where we can control the settings of the device, apply rules, remotely lock/wipe and send out over the air software updates. Will my child’s internet traffic be filtered?
Yes. The devices will be filtered by the school with our existing web filter to allow students the ability to connect them to non-school wireless networks and continue to be filtered. How can I help keep my student safe on the internet while not at school? Parents can learn more regarding staying safe online through www.commonsensemedia.org and through this video on their website. Is there a remote “find” or "kill" device on the iPad if it is lost or stolen? iPads can be located within the school via the wireless network. We will also be using the “Find my iPhone” app to assist in finding lost or stolen iPads. Find my iPhone will also allow us to lock or completely wipe the memory of any iPad when connected to the internet and if "Find my iPhone" was turned on. In some cases the signal will be provided to the police to track and recover the device. My child participates in an after-school club, activity, or sport. Who is responsible for the safekeeping of the iPad? We highly recommend that students leave their iPads in their locked school-assigned lockers when participating in home or away after-school events. Please do not leave them in a extremely hot or cold car as it may cause damage to the device. Will GCSC have its own tech support facility on site? GCSC technology staff will support issues related to iPads.
iTunes Store Is a personal iTunes account required? No. iPads that are deployed for grades 3-5 will have a generic iTunes account placed on them that is specific to their assigned teacher. Can a student or parent load apps on my child’s device? No. Students and their parent/guardian will not be able to add apps or music to the device. Are discounts available on app purchases? The school will purchase a core set of apps and selected apps for various departments/classes in bulk and distribute those apps to students. Throughout the year additional apps will be loaded on their iPads.
