MICHAEL HANRAHAN UCC Clubs Executive President Hello Everyone, Welcome to UCC! It is a great pleasure for me to introduce you to UCC’s proud tradition of sport. My name is Michael Hanrahan and I am the Clubs Executive President for 2016/17. The Clubs Executive is the governing body for Sports Clubs and our role is to encourage students to get involved, support the clubs in any way we can and promote health and physical activity within the university. With 58 clubs in UCC, we offer a diverse range of activity. Both competitive and recreational, each club offers something unique. All of our clubs are run by student committees and they can’t wait to welcome you to their sport on clubs day, Tuesday 13th September, in Devere Hall! There is literally a club for everyone, and they are a great environment to make the best friends of your life, have fun, gain new experiences and get active. The main message we want to get across this year is that you don’t need to already be an expert in a sport to join a club. Even if you’ve never heard of the club before, why not give it a go! All of our clubs cater for beginners and many students play just for fun. Of course if you want to compete at the highest level, and be the next Sonia O’Sullivan or Ronan O’Gara, our clubs can help you achieve your goals. Many successful athletes and sports people have attended UCC and there’s no doubt that some of their success can be accredited to their time spent here. The Mardyke Arena is the centre of sport in UCC and it offers a marvellous range of facilities such as the outdoor and indoor running tracks, 25m swimming pool, cardio and weights gym, two squash courts, a large indoor sports hall, rock climbing wall and recovery facilities such as hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and a wellness centre. I’ve been lucky to be involved in clubs over the last five years in UCC.

4

I quickly fell in love with squash, a game I had never played before coming to college, and I can honestly say I’ve made great friends for life through my club and have had lots fun going to intervarsities, league matches and tournaments both home and abroad. Clubs offer a great outlet for taking a break from the books and completely clearing your mind. If I had only one piece of advice for incoming first years it would be to remember that university isn’t only about academics, it’s also about developing as a person, and getting involved in clubs helps you meet many other students from a range of different courses and backgrounds and will help you fully immerse into college life. Clubs in UCC are amongst the best in the country. Just this past year we’ve seen our Atheltics club go viral for their 4x400m IUAA relay finish, our Basketball team crowned champions at intervarsities, UCC Rugby were promoted to division 1B and are determined to set up to the top division in the year to come, Men’s Hockey won their Munster Senior League and UCC Judo also cleaned up at intervarsities. Everyone involved in clubs in UCC is proud to wear the skull and crossbones, which represents a long tradition of sport originating to the very first clubs in 1880. We’d love to welcome you into this tradition and I also would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you the very best of luck in the year ahead in your academics and your new chosen club! See you on clubs day! For more information you can visit sport.ucc.ie.

Clubs Executive President 2016/17

CLUBS PRESIDENT

DECLAN KIDNEY UCC Director of Sport & Physical Activity Welcome back – a special warm welcome to our Freshers. Hopefully you all had an enjoyable and active Summer and are fit and ready to be involved in one or more of the sixty clubs that go to make up UCC Sport – and if you are not fit and ready – then all the more reason to get involved in some type of physical activity – remember, a healthy body goes a long way to having a healthy mind! 95% plus of our club’s activities are about participation/ fun, meaning - you will make new friends, learn new skills, get a chance to be a leader in your group and condition you into doing regular physical activity – which will, not alone have a major effect on your overall wellbeing, but will also massively expand the scope of your experiences while being a student here in UCC. The vast majority of our clubs are student led – this gives all willing students a chance to learn administrative and leadership skills that you might not otherwise get a chance to do in other non- student clubs – this can then be added to your CV/student experience portfolio, which when you leave college life and go looking for a job, can be a major strength in your application process. At this stage, a word of thanks to our outgoing Club Executive Committee so ably led by Aisling/Henry for 2015/16 and every best wish to our incoming committee led by Michael – who is the first student to take up the role on a full time basis. A big commitment from Michael and we in the Department look forward to working with him and his committee.

(Having seen the work some of this committee have already done in June 2016, you the Student Body will be well represented by those you elected). For those Freshers, who this might be new to, The Clubs Executive is the student elected body whose role is to oversee all UCC Clubs, administratively and financially. Physical activity is not just of benefit to the “sporty” type, but to all – if you are shy, or do not know how to get involved – please call in to see me or one of my colleagues and we will advise you to the best way to get involved. UCC Health Matters is another part of the UCC support system for students, so if a club or the gym is not for you, why not read the section in this magazine from UCC Health Matters for contacts to assist in other methods of looking after your overall wellbeing. To our first team players – every best wish for the season ahead, every time you put on UCC Skull & Bones you represent not alone yourself and your family, but everyone here in UCC, past and present. An onerous responsibility, when one considers the achievements of athletes and teams in days gone by. When you play with a smile on your face, the whole of UCC smiles with you. When you give of your best – you are a success. Playing any sport at a high level is a journey, one that does not go on forever – so enjoy the moment. We are all very proud of all our UCC athletes – individual and team – we always have been and now is your turn to add to the legacy of UCC Sport. You are the heartbeat of UCC.

CUH CHARITY: CHILDREN’S APPEAL The UCC Clubs Executive is proud to be supporting a fantastic local charity this year. The CUH (Cork University Hospital) Charity was established early in 2012 with the aim to provide a wide range of life-changing and life-saving equipment, facilities and services for patients in CUH, covering a region of up to 1.5 million people. Operating as a centre of excellence for over 42 different medical and surgical specialities on the campus including Cancer Services, Cardiac & Renal Services, Paediatrics, Neurosciences, Renal Medicine, Obstetrics and Emergency Medicine, CUH is unique as it is the only Level 1 Trauma Hospital in the country. At present CUH Charity is placing a huge emphasis on their Children’s Unit Fundraising Appeal. On an annual basis, over 30,000 children use the services of CUH. Cork University Hospital is a specialist centre for children with a range of illnesses including Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes and Epilepsy to name a few. Unfortunately, the children being treated in the Children’s Unit each year are limited to facilities that were built in the 1970’s. CUH Charity’s aim is to raise a total of €1,500,000 to refurbish in-patient facilities in the Children’s Unit. The Charity hopes to replace the current outdated Children’s Unit with a state-ofthe-art facility to meet the medical and surgical needs for the children of the Greater Munster region and incorporate Paediatric Services in one single unit. CUH Charity’s goal is to transform our hospital into a single centre of excellence for Munster and give all children the services and care they truly deserve. Please support CUH Charity: Children’s Appeal this year through events and collections organised by UCC Clubs. If you would like to help fundraise for this great cause please get in touch by emailing [email protected].

CUH CHARITY

In February 2015, UCC became Irelands first recognised Health Promoting University. UCC Health Matters is a cross-University collaboration of students and staff striving to create a healthier University environment for all. Each year UCC Health Matters is involved in the organisation of many events and campaigns on campus including: pedometer and cycling challenges, Health Matters Day, Mental Health Week, Sexual Health awareness week, Staff Wellbeing Day, UCC Desk to 5K and The Big UCC Cycle. We encourage new participants with an interest in health and health promotion in general to get involved by sending an email to [email protected]. Placements and internships are available also. Student engagement is of particular importance to the initiative, and since there is high turnover of students, we especially encourage you to get involved, if even for a year, or just a semester; your input can be invaluable! If you have a particular interest in any of our health promoting action areas, we would be delighted to meet with you and give you an idea of the work we do. Working Group Action Areas Alcohol & Substance Abuse – Physical Activity & Active Transport – Food & Nutrition – Sexual Health Mental Health – Safety – Built Environment – Sustainable Environment The working groups are made up of a number of staff and students who meet every couple of months to review progress within the action areas. The work of these groups focuses on both strategic and policy levels as well as on the ground co-ordinating events. It is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience as well as taking an active part in the health of UCC – your new home. UCC Health Matters extends a warm welcome to all new UCC students of 2016/17. We hope that you will join us on our journey to improve and maintain the health of UCC students and staff. SPORTING VENUES

AIKIDO Aikido is a Japanese Martial Art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Aikido is often translated as “the way of unifying (with) life energy” or as “the way of harmonious spirit”. Ueshiba’s goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical strength, as the aikido practitioner “leads”

the attacker’s momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks. Aikido derives mainly from the martial art of Daitu-ryu Aiki-jujutsu, but began to diverge from it in the late 1920s, partly due to Ueshiba’s involvement with the umoto-kyu religion. Ueshiba’s early students’ documents bear the term aiki-jujutsu. Aikdo in UCC takes place in the Mardyke Arena on Mondays and Thursdays in Hall 2. Why not come along to Clubs Day on September the 13th and meet us or email your questions to [email protected].

GO (WEIQI) Go/Weiqi/Baduk is a board game originally developed in ancient China over 2500 years ago. Two players take turns placing black and white stones, and trying to control the board. Sounds simple? Well you’re half right. The number of possible move combinations (~2.082 × 10^170 or 2 followed by 170 zeroes) mixed with years of strategic development, has made Go one of the most brilliant abstract thinking games. You may have heard in the last year about Google’s AI AlphaGo defeating the professional Go player Lee Sedol.

[email protected]

Humanity wasn’t defeated outright though, winning one of the 5 matches. By presenting AplhaGo with too many possible moves, Sedol proved that the human mind can still just about keep up with the computer. The UCC Go Club works in tandem with the Cork City Go club. We all meet weekly to play games, and learn from more experienced players. You can contact us at go@ uccclubs.ie or find us on Facebook.

For our rookies, we try to organise an event each year, ranging from an In-Club tournament, a trip to play another team (we’ve gone to Galway, London and Longford in recent years!) or invite other teams to play a friendly match. OLYMPIC HANDBALL Olympic handball is a fast paced, though, modern tactical team sport! It is the 2nd largest sport in Europe after soccer with millions of active handball players. In handball two teams of seven players pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team.  In Ireland it is growing a lot since the arrival of many continental players. The UCC OHC is one of the most successful clubs in Ireland. Since our foundation 5 years ago, we won the 2nd division, arrived twice at 2nd place in the 1st division and we arrived 2nd in the Irish Cup.The club’s secret is a mix of residential players and students, mainly international.

We are a wonderful team off the field as well, with numerous parties and events! Erasmus students from all across Europe join our team every year, and the OHC Club became one of their best experiences in UCC.  That’s where we need you! Are you a newcomer? No problem, come along and learn how to play! Are you an experienced player? Join us to try to win the Irish Championship with UCC! OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING

The Olympic Weightlifting Club is for all those who enjoy strength training, athleticism and craic. What better way to rid yourself of stress than hurling your own body weight over your head, before hearing the oh-so satisfying boom of the weights hitting the platform. As a sport, Olympic weightlifting involves competing in two movements, the Snatch, and the Clean and Jerk. These are the primary focus in training, which we complement with assistance exercises and copious amounts of flexibility work, not to mention everyone’s favourite - foam rolling. For those who wish to compete, there are many competitions held annually, the biggest of which for the club being the Intervarsities. [email protected]

The club has seen much success in the intervarsities in previous years, with our ladies taking the majority of our medals. We see ourselves as quite a light hearted club, with a friendly atmosphere at training. On the social side of things, we’re quite active. We regularly engage in social nights organised by our Ents Rep, along with our ritual of après training burritos in town. SOCCER (MENS) 2015/16 was another great season for UCC Soccer. The Freshers became the CUFL Division Four champions and the senior team had a fantastic campaign finishing runners up in the Munster Senior League Premier Division. The seniors had four players that represented the Irish Colleges and Universities national team and our club captain Sean O’ Mahony was awarded Munster Senior League player of the season. The club has five teams; three compete in the Munster Senior League and two in the Cork Athletic Union

We cater for all levels of students from senior to lads who just want to train away and have a game of ball at the weekend. SQUASH So… what does it take to be a great squash player? Here in UCC Squash, we do our best to create the perfect atmosphere for players to thrive and develop their squash skills. All skill levels are welcome to swing by - it doesn’t matter if you’re a pro, or if you’ve never held a racket before! Squash is the healthiest and most intense indoor racket sport, plus it’s a great way to offset that exam stress. We offer training and open courts throughout the week for our members, but that’s not all. Last year, the Intervarsities were held in Galway where UCC managed to grab a few medals. This year, we plan on rolling

up to Dublin for the Intervarsity bigger and better, to build on our success and have a bit of craic! We also participate in the Munster Squash Leagues where we play against other squash clubs throughout Munster. Last (but definitely not least), every year ends with our favourite: The Club Championships - where our ‘A’ Division winners get the honour of their names being inscribed on our Mardyke wall Plaque! So, in conclusion, if you want to meet sound people, have the craic, sweat buckets and grab a few medals - join UCC Squash! P.S. Our legendary nights out and social events are not to be missed!

We get to dive all year round from Cork, and we organise diving weekends in other great places around Ireland, such as Kerry, Galway and Clare from our boat. There are many historical wrecks all around Ireland, like the WWI German U-boat UC42, just outside Kinsale, or the merchant ship Aud, which was used to smuggle weapons during the 1916 rising. We also organise a yearly trip abroad to clearer and warmer waters! The club is home to many passionate people that are here to help you become a fully qualified, safe and confident diver! SURFING UCC Surf Club is an organisation that revolves around the students’ love for Sun, Sea and Surf. The club caters to all levels, from those who have never touched a surfboard before to those who are already pros at the surfing life. Not only do we take the weekends off to surf on the Irish coasts, but UCC students also have the opportunity to travel with us. Every year, UCC Surf Club brings its members across the sea to explore the surf scene. So far, we have surfed waves all [email protected]

across the world in countries such as Indonesia, Australia, Morocco, Portugal, France and California with more to come! As for the more local adventures, we hop along the west coast of Ireland to places such as Lahinch and Dingle not only for the surfing, but also for the banter along the way. If you have a love for the sun and sea, joining us at the UCC Surf Club is a great way to meet like-minded people as well as experiencing the thrill of your first wave! UccSurfClub

Swimming training is on a Tuesday and Thursday morning and Water polo on A Sunday, Monday and Wednesday evening. Although it is not necessary for members to dedicate their attendance to the club we encourage anyone with any experience in the water, or indeed those who wish to try something new to come along and give it a go.

TENNIS UCC Tennis Club is open to everyone from those who have never hit a ball, to those who already play at a competitive level, and everyone in between. There are weekly training sessions throughout the college year, with different groups so you can play with people at a similar level to you. At these training sessions, we have coaches who will help you learn to play and to improve your skills. Members of the club can also play outside of training times, allowing you to practice and play matches in your own time. We play our tennis at Sunday’s Well Tennis Club, located on the Mardyke Walk just a few minutes’ walk from main campus.

[email protected]

Our advanced teams compete in college intervarsities tournaments in the second college semester, where we compete with other colleges and universities from around the country. We had teams in the semi-finals of both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments in 2016, as well as winning the both Men’s and Women’s plate tournaments. The tennis club isn’t all sport! We have a number of social events and nights throughout the college year. These offer a great opportunity to get to know other players in the club and make some new friends. We would like to welcome any new-comers and welcome back returning players too, and we are looking forward to year ahead.

TRAMPOLINE & TUMBLING UCCTTC is a vibrant, active and highly energetic club. We practise Olympic style trampolining, which involves a specialist trampoline allowing bounces as high as 30ft, and tumbling, which involves gymnastics movements performed on a spring track. Whether you’re a practising gymnast or have never bounced on a trampoline before, UCCTTC can cater to your ability level. We’ll take you from absolute beginner to experienced gymnast - and it’s done in a super safe way, with state-of-the-art safety equipment and progressions taught by our experienced coaches. Trampolining and tumbling are great ways to keep fit and build strength throughout your entire body,

as well as a safe environment to learn advanced gymnastics movements. The club has an open-door policy; you can join our training sessions at any stage of the year - and it’s a great way to socialise and meet new people! We take part in four competitions a year, three in Ireland and one abroad in Scotland. Competitions are often the highlight of the entire college year, not just the trampolining year. We really can’t recommend enough that you come to one of our training sessions and see what we’re all about! We train three times a week, Mondays and Wednesdays from 5pm – 7pm and Thursdays from 4.30pm to 7pm in the Mardyke Arena Sports Hall.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that combines non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer, the agility of Basketball, the aerial passing and team tactics of American Football and the constant, manic action of Hurling. Ultimate is played 7 a-side on a 100 x 37m with scoring zones at either end, similar to rugby.Ultimate at UCC is one of the largest student run clubs and also one of the most successful. We play in the men’s, women’s and mixed divisions. This past year alone we won an All-Ireland title in all three divisions. This success is not just recent and has given us a reputation as the team to beat in Ireland. [email protected]

Each year members of our club join the ranks of the national team (U20s, U23s and Senior), competing at European and World Championships in places like Germany, Italy and Canada to name a few. This club isn’t all work and no play, though. A stand-out feature of the club is the openness and accepting nature of its members, especially to first-years and new members. Every week there is an organized event for the guys and girls to participate in. We pride ourselves on being a club where you are guaranteed to not only learn a new, and exciting sport, but make new friends for life.
