BA, Non-teaching degree 1 Goal Students will demonstrate communicative competence through the ability to use Spanish or French in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication at or above the Advanced Level, as defined by ACTFL, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. 1.1 Outcome Students engage in unrehearsed conversation on topics related to academic and non-academic situations. 1.2 Outcome Students make formal presentations and convey their ideas and opinions on academic and non-academic topics. 1.3 Outcome Students demonstrate comprehension of spoken language by recognizing the subjects and nuances of topics expressed in a wide range of media, in both standard language and some regional variants. 1.4 Outcome Students summarize, explain and interpret a broad range of topics in writing, using appropriate and culturally authentic language. 1.5 Outcome Students demonstrate comprehension of a variety of literary and nonliterary forms of written communication, with limited use of dictionaries or other aids. 2 Goal Students will demonstrate cultural proficiency. 2.1 Outcome Students identify literary and cultural elements in film and literature and make appropriate literary and cultural inferences from context. 2.2 Outcome Students recognize and interpret similarities and differences in beliefs, behaviors and value systems among target language cultures. 2.3 Outcome
