WELCOME

WELCOME Dear potential sponsor, We are happy to announce the launch of UNIHACK Sydney - Australia’s premier student hackathon. After three successful years in Melbourne, we are excited to bring what makes UNIHACK unique to Sydney. UNIHACK Sydney will be held on August 19 and 20, and will be organised by SUITS, the University of Sydney’s IT student society, in conjunction with the UNIHACK Melbourne team. The premise of UNIHACK is simple: teams of students have 24 hours to build a working prototype of their idea. Their idea can be anything – a website, a mobile app, a video game, or even a piece of hardware. Year on year, working prototypes have become more complex and impressive: from ready-to-ship web apps, image processing, and 3D rendering, to using tools such as light-dependent resistors or wireless sensors to enhance the prototype. The important thing is that the prototype must work when presented to the judges. Since its creation three years ago, UNIHACK has quickly grown to become one of the mustattend events for IT students nationwide — connecting you with some of Australia’s best and brightest. We anticipate more than 80 students competing at this year’s event from the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the University of Technology, Sydney, and other top universities across Australia. As part of our commitment to diversity, we also plan to work with student groups to increase the number of participants from underrepresented groups in the industry, including women and LGBT students. However, we can only do this with your support. As such, we are thrilled to launch our 2017 Sponsorship and Event Prospectus. Here, you will find more information about UNIHACK and how you can contribute to this year’s event. We thank you for taking the time to read our sponsorship prospectus, and look forward to working with you as a proud sponsor of UNIHACK Sydney 2017. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at [email protected] Regards, Terence Huynh Founder & Vice Chair, UNIHACK

Julia Wong Vice President, Sydney University I.T. Society (SUITS) 3

ABOUT US

ABOUT US We are a hackathon run by students, for students. Inspired by student hackathons in the United States and Europe, UNIHACK was created in 2014 by WIRED Monash. Within two years, UNIHACK has quickly become one of the mustgo hackathons for university students nationwide. The main purpose of UNIHACK is to showcase the best and most talented students currently residing in our universities today – the very people who will become the next generation of developers, thinkers, and entrepreneurs. We also connect these students with the IT industry, so they can network and gain useful advice to further their careers. UNIHACK Sydney is co-organised by WIRED Monash and SUITS Sydney, the IT student societies at Monash University Clayton and the University of Sydney respectively.

WHAT IS A HACKATHON? Hackathons originated in Silicon Valley and are now being staged regularly all over the world by organisations, charities and universities. The main aim for competitors is to produce ideas and build prototypes in a short amount of time that can be demonstrated at the end of the event. The event does not involve or relate to breaking into computer systems and exploiting vulnerabilities.

7

ABOUT US ABOUT SUITS The Sydney University Information Technology Society (SUITS) was first registered with the University of Sydney Union in 2007. The society was formed by merging together three computing and Information Technology related societies: Computer Science Undergraduate Society (CSUS), Information Technologies Society (iSoc) and Programming Competition Society (ProgSoc) – focused on providing training for the ACM programming competition. Our mission is to help students discover the joy of studying IT at Sydney University. We run social events, hold seminars, teach advanced programming skills, help connect companies with students, and assist communication between staff and students in IT. Some of our events include but are not limited to famed weekly barbecues, discussion ‘hack’ sessions, company site visits, cyber security workshops, programming competition training, movie nights, and industry events. SUITS is a registered club with the University of Sydney Union. The President for 2016-17 is Daniel Dickinson. For more information about SUITS, visit our website at http://suits.org.au

DIVERSITY COMMITMENT The organisers of UNIHACK are committed to increase the diversity of competitors at our event. We plan to continue our collaboration with Women in ICT and LGBT student societies to help promote our event and encourage greater participation. We are also committed to ensuring a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, disability and religion. All persons involved with UNIHACK – including attendees, volunteers, partners and organisers - are required to comply with the terms of the Code of Conduct. You can read the code of conduct at http://hackcodeofconduct.org/unihack. 8

THE EVENT

THE EVENT UNIHACK Sydney launches on August 19. This year’s event will begin on Saturday, August 19 and end on Sunday, August 20. It is open to all university and TAFE students across Australia that are currently studying either an undergraduate, honours or postgraduate course. Students have 24 hours to build a working prototype of their idea. The idea can be anything – it can be a mobile app, a website, a video game or even a piece of hardware. There are no platform or hardware restrictions. The only important thing is that the prototype must work when it is presented to the judges on Presentation Day. In line with our mission to be the Imagination Hackathon, students are encouraged to think creatively and test their software engineering and design skills. For example, last year’s event saw teams develop self-destructing documents; a website that visualises your bike ride before you leave home; and a mobile app that would solve any crossword puzzle instantly – all by simply taking a picture of it. Students will also have access to mentors that will help them develop their idea. These mentors will use their knowledge and experience to provide feedback on how to improve their prototypes. Whether you are a first time hacker or an avid programmer, UNIHACK welcomes all types of “hackers” regardless of skill level.

10

THE EVENT CAREERS FAIR The Careers Fair is an hour long networking event prior to the start of the hackathon. Students will arrive bright and early and be most receptive to meeting you. Take this opportunity to share what your company has to offer, and how they can go about applying for your graduate or internship roles. (Hint: Students love swag, so don’t forget to bring company-branded swag!)

TECH WORKSHOPS Tech workshops are 20 minute presentations that are designed to help students with their prototype or studies. We plan to host six tech workshops prior to the start of the hackathon. These workshops should be interactive and focus on being relevant to students in relation to the hackathon. For example, teaching competitors how to use a product, or skills improvement. These spots will be available to only Diamond and Emerald serve basis. Please note: presenting a tech talk is optional.

sponsors on a first come first

IDEA/PITCH VALIDATION Idea Validation and Pitch Validation are hour long sessions that will occur on Day 1 and Day 2 of the hackathon respectively. Mentors will be able to interact with our brilliant competitors, provide assistance, and make a lasting impact on them. Here, the main goal of the mentor should be to help struggling teams elevate their idea and/or pitch prior to the official judging. The Idea Validation session will allow competitors to run through their idea with industry experts from your company. This is especially useful for teams that are unsure about their idea and how to take it to the next level. The Pitch Validation session will allow competitors to practice pitching their prototype to industry experts from your company. This is particularly useful for teams that have not experienced pitching to a small audience within a given time limit. As this is a brand new segment introduced to UNIHACK, we’re excited to get you involved! 11

THE EVENT PRIZES UNIHACK will be awarding at least three prizes: First, Second, and Third Place. More information about the prizes will be provided closer to the start of the event. We are happy to negotiate with sponsors in providing prizes to give out instead of payment. Depending on your package, sponsors can also award their own prizes at the event. This is the custom prize, and it is perfect for companies to further engage with students or for companies who want to see students create something their company’s API. Sponsors will be required to create the criteria, organise judges, and provide the prizes.

JUDGING The Judging Panel will consist of three people from the corporate or startup sectors. The panel will not feature any of the organisers, SUITS or university staff to ensure it is independent. Each judge will be given a guide on how to mark each team’s project. The Diamond sponsor will have one representative present on the judging panel. The other three will be chosen by the organisers. Sponsors are free to pitch for a representative to be considered as a judge for UNIHACK to the organisers. The full list of judges will be revealed closer to the start of the event. The venue will be released closer to the date.

WHY SPONSOR?

WHY SPONSOR? We connect you with the best students in our universities today. Sponsoring UNIHACK is a great way to connect with the top IT students from the the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the University of Technology Sydney, and other universities across Australia. Similar hackathons in the United States have provided sponsors access to many talented students who end up working for them in the future.

This is the best time to sponsor UNIHACK - here’s exactly why: • Meet talented students: Get access and establish personal relationships with some of the most driven and talented computer science, design, electrical and software engineering students from some of Australia’s top universities – before anyone else. • Witness these students perform during ideation, planning, building and presentation of their solutions. We provide a real environment for teamwork and execution, outside of the classroom or assessment centre setting. • Real-time adoption of products and feedback: This is the time when students will be able to try your product. They’ll be hacking away, trying new things and experimenting on how to bring your API/hardware to be used to the next level in ways you’ve not thought of before. You can also provide feedback and support as a mentor with their ideas and pitch. • Brand recognition and exposure: Show off your company’s technical side through various means – such as social media promotion, tech workshops, and API/hardware demos. • Promote your organisation’s graduate and internship programs through our social media channels and Careers Fair. • Say that you supported UNIHACK, an event that is promoting innovation in Australia. We are happy to negotiate with you to create a package that satisfies your needs.
