university of savannakhet, laos, january 23–27, 2017 Training on Mathematics (TryMaths) Workshop An Introduction to Mathematical Analysis With Real-Life Problems An Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations Fernando P. Costa (Univ. Aberta, Lisboa, Portugal) EXERCISES 1. The world population was about 5 × 109 in 1986. The rate of population increase for that year was computed as 2% per year. Use an exponential model to predict what the world population should have been in 2000. Compare with the real value for that year (check in the internet). Repeat for 2010. Comment the result you obtained. 2. A population is described by an exponential model with time independent rate r. a) Suppose r > 0. Compute the amout of time, T2 , that has to elapse in order for the population to double its size1 . b) Suppose now that r < 0. Compute the amout of time, T1/2 , that has to elapse so that the population halves its size2 . 3. Suppose the growth rate, r, of the population is not time independent but varies with time such that t 7→ r(t) is an integrable function. When dx (t) = r(t)x(t), dt
with x(0) = x0 ,
obtain an expression for the evolution of the population size x(t). Consider the special cases where x0 = 10, r(t) = α + β sin t, with α and β real constants. Solve the equation analytically. Consider now α ∈ {−2, −1, − 21 , 0, 12 , 1, 2} and β = 13 . Plot the solutions and observe their behaviours. Comment the observed differences and relate them to some relevant parameter in the equation. 4. Consider a bank loan of 109 Kip with 4.3% interest rate per year and assume continuous interest and repayment instalments. Suppose the annual repayment is 2 × 108 Kip. Plot the repayment function D(t). Compute how much time will it take to repay the full loan. Suppose now the annual repayment is 45 × 106 Kip. Compute the time of repayment and compare with what would happen if there were 0% interest rate.
