The goal of the ultrasound visiting scholars program is to make available to WINFOCUS members a variety of opportunities at centers throughout the world for training in point of care ultrasound. The diversity of the WINFOCUS community is its strength and people can look to this program to become point of care ultrasound experts and leaders or just to gain confidence in their scanning ability. The concept is to have a survey that program directors complete that outlines the structure of the training opportunity (cost, schedule, who the instructors are, length of time, language of instruction) and then to have each center reviewed and approved by the Board. Once a program is approved the survey information will be posted on a central WINFOCUS.org webpage and applicants can find centers that match their needs. Applicants must be WINFOCUS members in order to apply and will contact NOEMA first to have their membership confirmed. The applicant will list the centers they are interested in in their email to NOEMA and, once their membership is confirmed, NOEMA will send the applicant an application and the applicant will contact the training centers directly to apply to the program. Once the applicant is accepted by the program and the parties agree on a training contract, NOEMA will administer the financial transactions. The logistics for housing, flight, etc are the responsibility of the applicant. NOEMA can help arrange logistics for an extra fee that can be arranged separately between the applicant and NOEMA. WINFOCUS will provide a “certificate of attendance” for each scholar once he or she completes the training program. This is NOT a competency assessment program - competency assessment is administered by WINFOCUS through the ITU/ITO program. If a training center is also an ITU/ITO approved center that can provide WINFOCUS competency assessments. Specific programs can list this on their survey and applicants can choose them if this is what they need. Finally, a post-training survey will be completed by the applicant and posted by NOEMA on the webpage so future trainees and the training sites themselves can get feedback on the programs. The financial cost of each program will be set by each training center. WINFOCUS will add 15% as an administrative fee to each programs cost (tuition + 15% = total fee). The trainee will pay WINFOCUS directly through NOEMA and then NOEMA will distribute the money to each training center. ________________________________________________________________ Page 3 WINFOCUS Secretariat Office Via Orefici, 4 - 40124 Bologna (ITALY) Tel +39 051 230 385 - Fax +39 051 221 894 Email

Emergency Department which is among the top five NIH-funded departments in the United States, and at a top-tier medical school. We offer fellows the opportunity for supervised scanning; but the true strength of the program lies in our ability to mentor research projects and administrative experience. Bret Nelson, the program director, has led the Ultrasound Division for ten years and is Chair of Mount Sinai’s hospital-wide Point of Care Ultrasound Committee. We have established a multi-departmental point of care ultrasound program where electronic image archiving and documentation are being standardized, using the Emergency Department as a model. There are a number of quality improvement initiatives ongoing which involve residents and faculty. We have finiancial and compliance projects and information technology advances as we roll out our electronic systems throughout the hospital. There are a host of educational opportunities as we continue to train hundreds of Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and other residents, as well as medical students of all levels in the use of ultrasound. It is important to us to work with our visiting scholars to craft a curriculum and experince tailored to each individual’s need. We will bring our resources to bear in a targeted fashion to ensure you leave us with the tools you need to lead a program at your home institution.
