Utah Dodgeball

Casual backyard social dodgeball. Winning and losing make no difference here, so just have fun instead. Don't be a competitive bro with attitude. Have fun, admit when you've been hit, and get to know your teammates.

This is not competitive dodgeball so don’t act like it is If you're taking things too seriously, you'll be told to leave. This is just a relaxed get together of goofing off. If you care about winning, or want to show off how athletic you are, or if you’re going to be the person who argues about whether you got hit or not, go join a league instead. This is the wrong dodgeball for you. The net is lava. Stay away. Don’t reach over or under the net to get a ball from the other side. You are allowed to go around the net and bring a ball back though (but you cannot toss them over or throw while in enemy territory).

Getting out. Getting in. If you get hit or a ball you throw is caught, you are out and should head to the back of the line. When you’re at the front of the line, be watching for a teammate to catch a ball - which puts you back in the game. You’re considered back in play the exact moment they catch it, so be expecting somebody to pick you off at that moment. #cheapshot Cannot use ball as a shield Holding a ball makes it part of your body. As are all shoe laces, loose/baggy articles of clothing, pony tails, bow ties, fringe leather jackets, etc. You’re out if they’re hit by a ball. If you barely get knicked by a ball, just own it and show you’re an honorable person by admitting you got hit. Jesus, Gandhi, and Tom Hanks would all do that same. Be like them. Throwing from the green is pointless The entire court is in play, but you can only throw from the red part of the court. Both feet should be in the red, or at least close. If you’re not trying to cheat, it’s okay to be a little over. A ball thrown from the green area is immediately a dead ball. If you get hit while standing in the green, yes you’re still out. Play at halfcourt if it’s just you and one teammate Don't hang out in the back half of the court if you're one of the last players on your team. It's poor sportsmanship to hide way back there. Move up when you’re reminded to.

Guys can only throw a normal-sized ball Smaller sizes (red medium balls, green microballs) are for gals only. If a guy throws a smaller ball, he’s out automatically. Yes this rule is sexist, we know. Dead balls after hitting objects If a ball hits the net even a little bit, it's dead and cannot get a player out after that. Other objects that cause a dead ball are: the ground (duh), the fencing, another mid-air ball. If the ball hits your foot and the ground at the same time, just admit you barely got unlucky and head to the back of the line. Everyone will respect you more. Life goes on and you’ll be back in soon anyway. Hitting a person does not make a ball dead A ball can bounce around and hit multiple people, or it can also still be caught after hitting somebody. A ball is not dead until it hits the ground or a dead ball object listed above. A ball’s not dead just because it hits an opposing player. Hitting a teammate makes it a dead ball though, yep. Why’s your aim that bad? Don’t hit people in the head. Aim lower. Your best bet for getting someone out is to snipe one of their feet. That being said, bad throws slip through now and then, so head shots happen sometimes... and they do count as getting out. If you hit somebody in the head (don't do that), apologize and give them a hug. Make sure they know it was an accident. But you’ll still start the next game in the Penalty Box Of Shame.

For players that are out, this is the front of the line. If you get out, head to the back of this line. Kick balls back up toward the net while you’re in line.

These red circles show the half court line. If your team is down to 2 or 3 players, consider this your new back line. Read the “Play at halfcourt” rule for more info.

South end (Team 2)

North side (Team 1)

Teams are determined simply by numbering off... 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, etc. “One’s Up North” One’s play on the north side (the right side of this image) and two’s play on the south end of the court. So learn your north and south, and don’t forget the number you were assigned because your mom’s not here to remember for you. PLZ DON’T FORGET, OMG!
