Welcome to Making-it: Careers in Art and Design. This event is for young people interested in finding out more about career opportunities in art and design and has been devised in association with CreateVoice, the V&A’s young people’ s collective. This day could help shape your future. You are welcome to bring in your portfolio and CV for advice and feedback. All events are free and drop-in, and available on a first come, first served basis.

TALKS Fashion Journalism 11.00 – 11.30 The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre Scarlett Conlon, News Editor for Vogue, talks about her work, how to get started in fashion journalism, what qualities are needed to succeed, and the future of fashion journalism. Film 11.30 – 12.00 Seminar Room 3, Learning Centre The film industry employs a wide range of professions. Laura Kloss from Chocolate Films, talks about the different roles and what skills you need to get involved. Engineering and Architecture 12.00 – 12.30 The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre Carolina Bartram, Associate Director from Arup, an international engineering consultancy, gives an insight into the work of the company, with an overview of the role of the engineer, architect and other professions in the construction industry. Carolina has degrees in both engineering and architecture. Museums and Heritage 12.30 – 13.00 Seminar Room 3, Learning Centre Beth McKillop, Deputy Director of the V&A, gives an overview of the roles within the museums and heritage industries. Find out what jobs there are and what qualifications are needed. Portfolios and Online Presence 13.00 – 13.30 The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre Lecturer Jane Francis explains what makes an outstanding portfolio. Julia Dennis, founder of London Art Portfolio, explains how to get an online presence for university and work. From Idea to Business 13.30 – 14.00 Seminar Room 3, Learning Centre With almost half of graduates wanting to start their own business and three in ten businesses investing less than £1,000, should you go for it? Rebecca Coppock from the Prince’s Trust explains the process of getting a concept off the ground, and the support that is out there. Creative Futures 14.00 – 14.30 The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre What jobs will there be in the creative industries? How can you be part of it? Kieran Long, Keeper of Contemporary, Architecture and Digital at the V&A, gives his insights into where future developments will be and an overview of V&A East. Festivals 14.30 – 15.00 Seminar Room 3, Learning Centre Working on festivals can give an insight and valuable experience in event production. Lisa Pickering, one of the organisers of Glastonbury, gives an overview into how the festival is organised and what jobs there are working on festivals.
Product Design 15.00 – 15.30 The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre Associate Directors from Seymourpowell give an overview of the roles in product design and advice on how to get involved. Seymourpowell is one of the world’s leading design and innovation companies, producing some of the ‘milestone’ products of the last two decades. Making Work 15.30 – 16.00 Seminar Room 3, Learning Centre Find out how Photographer Danny Baldwin, Fashion Designer Jane Bowler and Craftsperson Sophie Sellu, set up their own businesses. Being a Freelancer 16.00 – 16.30 The Lydia and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre With 43% of current creative industries workforce self-employed, a number set to rise. Carol Harris, member of the UK Freelancers, explains what is involved in setting yourself up as a freelancer.

Lucy Alexander, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Graphic & Communication Design Department of the Foundation Course at Central Saint Martins, offers advice on portfolio preparation, graphic design and careers in the creative industries. Carol Harris, member of the UK Freelancers, explains what is involved in setting yourself up as a freelancer. Photography Foyer, Learning Centre Danny Baldwin’s photographs have been published in Vogue, Q Magazine, SuperSuper and FaceOn. See his work and gain insight into the fashion photography industry. Fashion Foyer, Learning Centre Jane Bowler established her studio in London in 2011, she is an innovator in luxury fashion, accessories and textile design. She has an international celebrity clientele. Costume Design Theatre and Performance, Rooms 103-106 Abigail Hammond has worked as a professional designer for over 25 years, creating costumes for fringe, community and West End shows. Set Design Theatre and Performance, Rooms 103-106 Find out from Jesca Cherrelle Warren what is involved in set design and possible career pathways into this field. Illustration and Graphic Design Paintings Gallery, Room 82 Alexa Galea shows a selection of her work, and explains the various routes into being a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Meet the current V&A Artists in Residence Foyer, Learning Centre Exhibition Road Digital Resident Jamie Jenkinson 11.00 – 14.00 Jamie Jenkinson is a British video artist, working with sculpture, installation and performance. Jamie manipulates his iPhone’s inbuilt features as a mode of unconventional image making. Samsung Korean Digital Art Resident Yiyun Kang 14.00 – 17.00 Yiyun Kang is internationally recognised for her projection mapping installations. Her works investigates opposing values such as reality and virtuality, materiality and immateriality, exploring the overlapping area between those extremes.
