*vasiSTha Intervenes *vAlMiki of the ANTHILL: When he had heard those tearful and bewildered words, *vizvAmitra, the friend of all, made this reply, --this angry reply,-to the King. -1-

*vizvAmitra the Allfriend: When you have promised "I will do this thing", your duty is to do it. Oh, Your Majesty, are you a lion, or a frightened deer? -2-

It is not fitting for one of the great clan of *raghu the Swift to fail to keep his word. Hot rays do not come forth from the cool moon. -3-

If you are so incompetent, Your Majesty, I will go back the way I came. O Son of the Bullrider, promise-breaker, long may you be happy with your friends! -4-

*vAlMiki of the ANTHILL: *vizvAmitra, the friend of all, was overcome with anger, and the whole earth shuddered with it, and the gods themselves trembled with fear. -5-

Seeing *vizvAmitra, the friend of the world, stricken with anger, the steadfast, faithful, *vasiSTha, supremely wise, uttered these words: -6-

#vasishtha said: Born in the House of Sugarcane, the *ikSvAkus, you are the ornament of dharma, His Majesty King *dazaratha Charioteer. You're honored throughout the three worlds. -7-

**jd. We will encounter the "three worlds" constantly as we proceed, you and I, in our study. In the religious sense, the worlds are Earth, Hell, and Heaven. In YV the term has a broader, philosophical sense of Waking, Dream, and Sleep. In the Traveler episodes, it refers to Earth, Inner Space, and Space.

You have always been steadfast, true to your word. Therefore you must not forsake the Dharma Path, famed as you are for virtue everywhere. -8-

Keep to a king's Dharmic duty. You should not forsake the Dharma. You should do the bidding of this Muni, this lord of the three worlds. -9-

You gave your word. You said, "I will do this thing." King, if you do not do it, your good works will come to nothing. Therefore, let rAma go. Sir, you are King dazaratha the Charioteer, born in the House of Sugarcane! If you don't keep your word, then whoever will keep theirs? -11-

Your people are inspired by you and men like you in their conduct. Do not teach them promise-breaking; do not now forsake the Dharma. -12-

Like the *amRta nectar of deathlessness, guarded by *agni, the god of fire, rAma will be safe from the rAkSasa-s, *astra weapons or no *astra weapons. -13-

*vizvAmitra, the Friend of All, is a model for all heroes, wise above any in this world, tending the sacred *tapas fire. He knows all.about those astra weapons, those known and those unknown in the three worlds; and no other man better knows or will know such things. -15-

No gods, nor any great *RSis, no *asura Darklings, *nAga Serpents, *yakSa Guards, *gandharva Singers, not all of these combined are the equal of this Muni. -16-

It was the great *krzAzva Skinny-horse who taught *kauzika the Owl the high and powerful *astra arts, when he won his kingdom long ago. -17-

The Skinny-horse weapons are like the sons of *prajA-pati the Grandsire, obedient to this heroic friend of all, who is illumined, full of *ojas power. *jayA the Victorious and *suprabhA the Glorious were the two best of the middle-born daughters of *dakSa the Artful. And they were mothers to a hundred powerful *astras.

-19-

jayA was granted a boon, and so gave birth to fifty sons, deadly astra-s that the *sura Brightlings could control at their will. Then *su-prabhA the Glorious gave birth to fifty other sons. They're called the *samgharSa Frictionals. They are terrible and powerful. -21-

**jd. *astra-s are living/robotic weapons of great power. In the Battle Book of rAmAyaNa, they are important contenders.

Therefore there is no reason for your mind to be troubled about letting rAma attend upon *vizvAmitra, the friend of all, the World-Muni, the great Hero. -22-

He's a master of Truth, the Lord of Munis: in the company, *sadhu, of this person, though you die, you become immortal, you do not end in misery, like the deluded. -23-
