Verdigris Knits by Sarah Burton “Blitz Scarf” A simple mosaic design that can be varied to create several different looks. This scarf is worked using slipped stitches – an easy technique that creates textured, two-color results while working with only one color at a time. If you can knit a garter stitch scarf, you can knit this scarf. Several variations are provided to change up the design by alternating colors or throwing in some optional purl stitches. Skills: Cast on, knit, slip stitches purlwise, bind off – and purl for some of the options. Size: 6” wide X 72” long.

Materials:

Standard Abbreviations:

BO - Bind off

Worsted weight yarn in two contrasting colors – Approximately 220 yards (100 g) each MC and CC. Tested with Cascade 220. 1 pair size 8 US (5 mm) needles or size you typically use to knit worsted weight.

Gauge: 20 stitches & 38 rows = 4” in pattern stitch (knit every row) after light blocking. However, gauge is not critical for this project.

CC – Contrast color CO – Cast on K – Knit MC – Main color P- Purl RS – Right side WS – Wrong side

General Notes – how to read the pattern chart: This pattern uses a mosaic chart. Each row of the chart represents 2 rows of knitting with the same color yarn. Each row of the chart is read first right to left for the RS (odd numbered) rows and then left to right for the WS rows. The first square of the row shows when to use MC (shaded) or CC (white). When knitting a row with MC, knit the stitch represented by the shaded squares and slip the stitch represented by the white squares purlwise with yarn in back on the RS and yarn in front on the WS. The term “front” means the side closest to you when knitting, and “back” means the side away from you when knitting. When knitting a row with CC, knit the stitch represented by the white square and slip the stitch represented by the shaded square purlwise with the yarn in back on the RS and in front on the WS. You don’t really need to reference the chart for the WS rows, just knit the stitches that are in the same color as the working yarn and slip the others with the yarn in front. There is no need to cut the yarn between rows of MC and CC. Just carry the MC and CC yarns up the side. © 2011 Verdigris Knits -All rights reserved. Finished objects are yours to treat as you wish. Verdigris Knits by Sarah Burton Directions (see general notes to read chart correctly): CO 33 stitches with CC. Work Rows 1-18 of the Blitz Chart, starting at the bottom right of the chart (Row 1) with CC. Repeat Rows 3-18 until scarf reaches desired length. Bind off in CC. This creates a scarf with CC as the background and MC as the accent. Weave in ends, and steam block scarf to straighten. Blocking will greatly improve the appearance of mosaic designs.

Blitz Chart

Shaded blocks designate MC; white blocks designate CC

Options: •

To make the MC dominant in the scarf – Cast on in MC and work only Rows 19-36 once and then repeat Rows 21-36 until the scarf is the desired length. Bind off in MC.

An interesting effect can be achieved if MC and CC are alternated each time the chart is worked. In this case, repeat Rows 1-36 until the scarf is the desired length.

Work half of the scarf repeating Rows 1-16, work two rows of CC, then repeat Rows 19-34 for the second half of the scarf

Change even numbered Rows as follows to keep the vertical bars in stockinette stitch while the horizontal bars stay in garter. Rows 4, 8, 22, 26 - *K3, slip 1 with yarn in front, P1, slip 1 with yarn in front, repeat from * to end of row. Rows 6, 24 - * K3, P1, slip 1 with yarn in front, P1, repeat from * to end of row. Rows 12, 16, 30, 34 – K2, *slip 1 with yarn in front, K3, slip 1 with yarn in front, P1, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, K2. Rows 14, 32 – K1, slip 1 with yarn in front, *P1, slip 1 with yarn in front, P1, K3, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, slip 1 with yarn in front, K1.

Change even numbered Rows as follows (note- maintain first and last 3-4 sititched in garter to keep keep edges from rolling - here the horizontal bars will be garter and the vertical bars will be stockinette. Rows 4, 8, 22, 26 - *P3, slip 1 with yarn in front, K1, slip 1 with yarn in front, repeat from * to end of row. Rows 6, 24 - * P3, K1, slip 1 with yarn in front, K1, repeat from * to end of row. Rows 12, 16, 30, 34 – P2, *slip 1 with yarn in front, P3, slip 1 with yarn in front, K1, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, P2. Rows 14, 32 – P1, slip 1 with yarn in front, *K1, slip 1 with yarn in front, K1, P3, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, slip 1 with yarn in front, P1.

For an easy, two-color cast on, work a long tail cast on using one strand of MC and one strand of CC. Just tie a knot in the two strands,. Place the knot on top of your needle and cast on using one color over your forefinger and the other color over your thumb. Slip the knot off the needle when you work back to it on the first row. The knot does not count as a stitch. Not only does the cast on look great - but both MC and CC are in position and ready to work, which makes adding in the second color just a wee bit easier.
