Vernal Verde

A vest pattern for toddler boys, to keep their bodies lightly warm and their appearances fresh. Size 2T Finished Measurement 22-1/2” circumference Gauge 20 sts by 24 rows = 4” in diagonal rib pattern using size US 8 needles

Yarn Any aran weight wool blend, 100 grams in main color & 20 grams contrasting color. I used Stitch Nation Bamboo Ewe (55% Bamboo, 45% Wool; 177 yds/ 162 m; 3.5 oz/ 100 g), 1 skein Sprout (MC) & 1 skein Mermaid (CC).

Notions 24” circular needle size US 6 24” circular needle size US 8 Set of 5 dpns size US 6 Set of 5 dpns size US 8 tapestry needle stitch markers 2 stitch holders

STITCH PATTERN Diagonal Rib (multiple of 6 sts) Round 1 (RS): *K5, p1; repeat from * to end. Round 2 (WS): Work as for previous round to 2nd to last st. P1, place marker. This is now the starting point for your next round. (You will “lose” a stitch at the end of every other round. This creates the diagonal rib pattern.)

Notes This vest is worked in the round and shoulder seams are grafted. Armholes and neck are shaped simultaneously. I used almost an entire skein of my MC yarn. I recommend buying two skeins of MC and one of CC.

Notes for Adjustments The diagonal rib pattern is worked in multiples of 6 sts. You may increase (or decrease) the vest circumference by adding (or subtracting) sts in multiples of 6 and adjusting neck and arms as needed or by using a different yarn weight.

Notes for Adjustments The neck ribbing is made by picking up an odd number of sts along the back neck and the same number of sts along each front. The arm ribbing is made by picking up an even number of sts. All ribbing is picked up in approximately 5 sts per inch.

NECK & ARMHOLE SHAPING BO 8 sts for left armhole. Using one size US 8 dpn, work the next 21 sts per established Diagonal Rib pattern, k2tog. Left front is now set up. Using another size US 8 dpn, ssk, work next 21 sts in Diagonal Rib pattern. Right front is now set up. BO 8 sts for right armhole. Using another size US 8 dpn (or two), work the remaining 46 sts in Diagonal Rib pattern. Back is now set up. Break yarn, leaving a 6” tail.

Repeat these two rounds for Diagonal Rib. VEST BODY

The vest is now worked back and forth, first on the front two pieces, and then on the back.

Switch to size US 8 circular needles Using size US 6 circular needles and and MC. Work in Diagonal Rib CC, cast on 108 sts. Join to work in the pattern for 7” or desired length. When You will need a separate ball or end of round. you reach your stitch marker, end yarn for the left and the right front. round. Work in k2, p2 rib for 2”.
