WILDLIFE VETERINARIAN POSITION AVAILABLE
AMAZOONICO Is a wildlife rescue centre located in the Amazon region of Ecuador. The main objectives of the centre are to provide the best possible conditions for animals staying permanently in the centre, reintroducing viable candidates to their natural habitat, and offering environmental education – with an emphasis on conservation – to those who visit the centre daily. amaZOOnico seeks a veterinarian with wildlife experience who will oversee the care and general health of the centre's animals. The position requires dedication and a fulltime commitment. In addition to medical work, the veterinarian would be expected to help with the varied tasks of daily life in the centre as they present themselves. Compensation will include a monthly stipend of $400/month plus food and accommodation at the centre.
SPECIFIC TASKS
Permanent monitoring of the health of resident animals Development and implementation of an annual deparasitation plan Design and implementation of rehabilitation strategies Design and implementation of enrichment plans Enforcement and improvement of protocols for quarantine and sanitization Diagnoses and administration of appropriate treatments Detection and identification of parasites Evaluation of nutrition plans and implementation of diet modifications when necessary Oversight of medication supply and medical equipment Performance of necropsies Assistance with the daily activities of the centre (cleaning enclosures, feeding animals, carrying food supplies, educational tours, fundraising, etc.) Management of staff/volunteers when necessary
REQUIREMENTS Certified veterinary degree Experience handling and administering medical care to wild animals Fluency in Spanish and/or English Ability to work in a multicultural context Ability to tolerate a demanding work schedule Comfort living and working in a remote rainforest location (hot, humid, many insects), with rustic accommodations, and basic food (pasta, rice, meat, vegetables etc.) Willingness to serve as a volunteer and perform volunteer tasks (cleaning enclosures, feeding animals, carrying fruit, educational tours, etc.) for the first month to gain an understanding of the basic functions of the centre Availability to occupy the position for 1 year or more
