A VISIT TO THE DOCTOR They both start with a rash on your skin, but they are very different illnesses. Can you guess which conditions these are? You may or may not have had chickenpox or measles, but surely you’ve heard of them. Below are some ways your doctor uses to tell them apart and treat them. Chickenpox is a mild illness that starts with a skin rash and a low fever. People who catch this disease often have a headache and usually don’t feel good all over. The rash is itchy. Soon the rash turns into bumps, which show up on the skin in groups, and turn into blisters. The blisters may become filled with a milky liquid before turning into scabs. Chickenpox, which is caused by a virus, is catching, but if you’ve already had it, you probably won’t get it again. If you have chickenpox, your doctor will offer some ways to stop the itching. Some of these ways include taking oatmeal baths and applying anti-itching lotion. Most people who get chickenpox are children. Measles is a serious illness that spreads easily from person to person. The first signs of measles are a fever, which can sometimes go as high as 105 degrees, red and watery eyes, a cough, and a runny nose. Small pink spots with a greyish-white centre usually develop inside the mouth and on the insides of the cheeks. Several days later, the rash spreads all over the body. A virus causes measles, which occurs mostly in children. In most cases, a person will only have measles once. Nowadays, however, if you have a measles shot, you will most likely never have this illness. Before the 1960’s, most children caught measles. But thanks to a team of doctors, a measles vaccine was developed in 1963.
