Vocabulary (Radioactive)   Lee Notes:  Date:  2/3/15    Isotope​  ­   All atoms of an element have the same number of protons.  The number of neutrons  can vary.  ex.  Chlorine (Cl).  All atoms of Cl have 17 protons ​ but​  it can have 18 or 20  neutrons.  ​ So​ , when an element has more neutrons than protons it is called an  isotope.    NOT all isotopes are radioactive!!!!!    Radioactive Isotopes​ ­  Some nuclei of isotopes are unstable and tend to break down (decay).  When this  happens the nuclei also emit energy in the form of radiation.  Good use of Radiation:  chemotherapy to treat cancer  Bad use of Radiation:  bombs    Date:  2/4/15  Is the spontaneous decay of the nucleus ­ it will either lose protons, or neutrons, can  change a proton to a neutron, or change a neutron to a proton.    Because of the number of protons identifies the element, this decay will change the  element.    Absolute Age Dating of Rocks.   This allows scientists to put a number on rocks and fossils.    Half Life ​ ­  The length of time it takes for one half of the original isotope (parent rock) to decay.
