Making more of life for people over 50 in the Bradford District

Happy New Year! I hope that when you read this in early 2015 that you have had a good Christmas holiday and I would like to offer my very best wishes for 2015. As usual, this copy of voice is full of news and information focused on helping the over 50’s in Bradford get the support and advice they need and to get the best out of life. We are working hard to improve not just ‘Voice’ but our Website as well. We want them to be able to provide you with as much information as we possibly can, in the easiest possible way. We will let you know how we are getting on in the next issue. As I mentioned last time, two of our main aims between now and April next year are to establish our priorities for the next 3 years and to work more closely with our partners in Bradford Council and the Health sector. We are still going through difficult times and by working closer together we should ensure that we minimise the potential impact of any changes to funding or to services provided to older people across the Bradford District.

Colin Gornall

Of course, we shall also continue to campaign both locally and nationally for properly funded health & social care services to ensure that older people in Bradford have access to the advice & support that they need and we would like to put an end to age discrimination generally. We recently received some fantastic news! I’m delighted to confirm that our Befriending bid with the Big Lottery has been successful. The new 3 year funding will ensure that we can extend the previous scheme to cover the whole of the Bradford area to improve as many lives as we possibly can. We will Age UK now be recruiting three new members of staff for Bradford & the service and we will focus on reducing District (formerly loneliness and isolation, which affects so many Age Concern older people in today’s society. It will also enable Bradford & us to work closely with ethnic minority groups and District) is a local charity serving the other communities, helping them to set up their Bradford Metropolitan District (Bradford, own befriending services if needed and work to Shipley, Keighley, Bingley, Ilkley and the plug the gaps around the befriending work carried surrounding areas). out by other organisations. I also want to let you know about a current opportunity to receive some free warm home insulation support in your homes. We are working with Bradford Council and Islamic Relief UK to carry out 150 “Warm Home Insulations” across the district. The Warm Home Insulation includes things such as draught proofing, energy lighting and hot water tank jackets. If you would like to be added to the list or would like to receive more information please speak to our Helping Hands Team on 01274 728259.

We work with other Age UK and Age Concern organisations the length and breadth of the country as part of Age England Association, supporting each other, working together and sharing Quality standards.

Well it’s definitely going to be a busy year however the whole Age UK Bradford & District Team and I are looking forward to the challenge and will be working extremely hard to ensure we can make a difference to older people’s lives here in Bradford.

Our thanks for recent donations and assistance to:

All money earned, and all donations and legacies received, are used to support our work in the Bradford District.

How to keep warm this winter These are our five top tips to stay warm this winter. 

  

18 degrees C is the ideal temperature for your bedroom and 21 degrees C is the ideal temperature for your living room. Check your thermostat or use a room thermometer to monitor temperature Keep your bedroom window shut on a night. Breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections Stay active and when you are indoors try not to sit still for more than half an hour, if you can get up. Walk around or make a hot drink Eat well. It is important to eat well, especially in the winter. Have at least one hot meal a day and have regular hot drinks, as they help to keep you warm. Also stock up on basic food items in case of a cold snap If you are feeling under the weather, get help as soon as possible and tell your friends, family or carer. You can also get advice from your local pharmacist or from www.nhs.uk/ asap. The earlier, the better.

Some longer term things you can do to help ward off the winter chill    

Have your heating system serviced and chimney swept Check your water stopcock is working properly Fit thermal linings to your curtains if you can – this will also help to keep the heat in Check out the benefits and grants available to help with insulation and energy efficiency – our team at Starting Point can point you in the right direction. Call them on 01274 391190 or contact our Helping Hands service on 01274 728259.

What to stock up on If you can afford it, you’ll feel more relaxed if you stock up for the winter months. Try to have a store of these in case you have trouble getting out of the house     

Batteries for your smoke alarm Salt or sand for icy steps and pathways Tinned fruit and vegetables – it’s just as nutritious as the fresh kind Cold and flu medicines, as well as any repeat prescriptions Pasta and rice will last through the winter months, so stock up now

Winter Fuel Payment You could get between £100 and £300 tax free to help pay your heating bills if you were born on or before 5 July 1952. Most payments are made automatically between November and December and you should get your money by Christmas. You usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you get the State Pension or another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit) (Continued on page 5)

Paying your Residential Care or Nursing Home Fees You will have to contribute towards your residential care or nursing home fees. Your local Health and Social Care (HSC) Trust will work out how much you have to pay through a financial assessment. Getting your needs assessed Before any financial assessment you will have a needs assessment. Your local Trust will be able to tell you how much they usually pay for a residential care or nursing home that will meet your needs and then arrange a suitable residential care or nursing home for you. Or, you can choose one yourself that charges the same sort of price. This is important if you are paying your own fees to start with but think you might need to ask your local Trust for help later on. Your financial assessment After assessing your care needs, you'll have a financial assessment, with your HSC Trust, looking at your income and capital to calculate how much you have to pay towards your home fees. Examples of income include: interest on your savings, private and/or State Pension, some benefits like Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance or the care component of Disability Living Allowance Your capital might include: savings, investments, any property you might own (like your own home or holiday home, for example) Before your financial assessment, make sure you're getting all the benefits you're entitled to. This is important because your contribution to your home fees will be based on all income - including benefits. No matter how much you have to pay towards your home fees, you must be left with £24.40 a week to spend as you choose. If you get the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, you will keep getting it. You'll also get up to £5.75 per week of any savings credit if you are over 65. Capital and the value of your home If you have over £23,250 in capital you will be assessed as being able to meet the full cost of your care. Capital between £14,250 and £23,250 will be calculated as providing you with an income of £1 per week for every £250 of your savings. Capital at or below £14,250 will be ignored in calculating how much you have to contribute to the cost of your care If you own your home then it will usually be counted as capital 12 weeks after you move permanently into a care home. The value of your own home will not be counted as capital if certain close relatives still live there. HSC contribution towards the cost of nursing provided in nursing homes If you live in a nursing home and have assessed nursing needs, your local Trust will pay £110.89 per week towards the fees to cover the cost of the nursing element. If your assessment indicates that your primary need is for health care, your Trust will pay the full cost of your care. This is called 'continuing health care'. Hospital staff, your local doctor (GP) or social worker can help arrange an assessment if you think you qualify. If you disagree with the decision made after your assessment you can ask for your case to be reconsidered or make a complaint to your local Trust.

Kedgeree Spicy rice, smoked haddock and boiled eggs Ingredients

Serves 2

1 large free-range egg - 340g smoked haddock fillets 2 fresh bay leaves - 85 g long grain or basmati rice Sea salt - 1 knob butter or ghee 1/2 tablespoon mustard seeds - 1 tomato, deseeded and chopped 1 small fresh finely chopped red chilli 1 heaped tablespoon curry powder Juice of 1 lemon 1 good handful fresh chopped coriander 1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, peeled & grated 1 small onion, or 1 bunch of spring onions, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled and finely chopped 1 small pot fat-free natural yoghurt

Method This is a traditional British breakfast from colonial India and it's a lovely little dish, with a nice balance of spicy and smoky flavours. It makes a tasty lunch or supper too – so get stuck in! Boil the egg for 10 minutes, then hold under cold running water. Put the fish and bay leaves in a shallow pan with enough water to cover. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for about 5 minutes, until cooked through. Remove from pan and leave to cool. Remove the skin from fish, flake into chunks and set aside. Cook the rice in salted water for about 10 minutes and drain. Refresh in cold water, drain again, and leave in the fridge until needed. Melt the butter or ghee in a pan over a low heat. Add the ginger, onion and garlic. Soften for about 5 minutes, then add the curry powder and mustard seeds. Cook for a further few minutes, then add the chopped tomatoes and lemon juice. Quarter the egg. Add the fish and rice to the above pan and gently heat through. Add the egg, most of the coriander and the chilli and stir gently. Place in a warm serving dish. Mix the rest of the coriander into the yoghurt and serve with the kedgeree.

The Need to Exercise and Follow a Healthy Diet

amounts of calcium and alkaline-forming foods, as opposed to less acid-forming ones. That means eating more fruits and vegetables and less sugar, processed food and alcohol. Taking vitamin D is also a proven way to increase bone health.

Loss of bone and muscle among older adults is a common but serious concern. Not only does it interfere with flexibility, balance and the ability to perform daily activities, but it contributes to osteoporosis, arthritis, falls, fractures and other injuries common among seniors. It's possible to maintain good muscle strength and bone mineral density with proper diet and exercise, both of which become increasingly important as you age.

Regular exercise will go a long way toward improving comfort, quality of life and independence in late adulthood. Exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise, increases bone and muscle mass, which keeps balance, endurance and strength intact. That means there is much less chance of falling and Professionals who care sustaining fractures.

As the body ages, calcium and other minerals are lost and bone density starts to decrease, especially among postmenopausal women. The discs between the spinal vertebrae may also start to lose their cushioning fluid, causing the spine to shrink and the bones to become thin and brittle. Joint fluids also decrease with age, which can cause stiffness and discomfort. In some areas of the body, particularly the knuckles, hips, knees and hips, the cartilage will often begin to degenerate altogether. All of these events can cause loss of height and problems with mobility, strength, endurance and posture and lead to bone and joint diseases such as arthritis.

Some Workout Objectives: ♦ Lubricate joints ♦ Stabilize spine ♦ Increase circulation ♦ Strengthen postural muscles ♦ Keep ankle joints flexible ♦ Strengthen mobilization muscles ♦ Strengthen tibialis muscles or shin

Research suggests that higher-protein diets can help keep older bones and muscles healthy and strong. This may work best if the protein is consumed with adequate

Ankles Circle the ankle by drawing an imaginary circle with the toes, 4 times to the right, then 4 times to the left. Repeat exercise with left foot. This exercise lubricates the ankle joint. Shins Tap the toes by lifting the toes of both feet (with the heels on the floor) and dropping the toes. Repeat 8 times and pause. Then lift toes and hold for a second and release. Repeat 4 times. This exercise strengthens the shin muscles and will help prevent tripping. Calves Extend leg from knee and flex the ankle. Point the toes toward the knee and feel the calf muscle stretching. Repeat 4 times on each leg, alternating legs. This exercise will help avoid cramping in the lower leg.

Key Safes – outdoor key boxes

The Yorkshire & Humber Community Ageing Research (CARE) Study Frailty is a condition that becomes more common as people get older and their bodily systems (including the brain, the immune system, muscles and bones) decline. There are currently around 85,000 frail older people living in the Yorkshire and Humber region. People with frailty tend to become more frail over time and are more likely to be admitted to hospital or long-term care, and have a shorter life expectancy. Even a small event - such as a change in medication or a minor operation - can have a major effect on a frail person, causing them to go from independent to dependent, or from mobile to immobile.

What is a key safe? A key safe is a secure metal box where you can store several keys outside your front door. People you trust can open the safe using a unique combination number. It can be used by care staff, family and friends who visit regularly, so that you don't have to answer the door. It also means that, in case of an accident or sudden illness, people will still be able to get in if you need help.

We have just started inviting people to participate in the Yorkshire & Humber Community Ageing Research (CARE) Study, where we aim to recruit up to 1000 older people and follow them for up to four years. We will collect information about their health, social and economic circumstances. This is a way of understanding more about frailty, how it progresses, and what treatments might help. To begin with, we are recruiting a range of people aged 75 years and over, some who may be frail and others who are fit and healthy.

At Age UK Bradford & District we recommend the C500 Police Approved KeySafe™ which provides the ultimate in key safe security being the only key safe in the UK to obtain ‘Secured by Design’ Police approval. The C500 also achieved LPS1175 level 1 security rating, a test devised by security experts including the Association of British Insurers. Therefore installing a C500 KeySafe™ will not invalidate your home contents insurance. Why fit a C500 KeySafe? · · · · · ·

It is the only key safe to have Police approval providing objective reassurance The C500 has a security rating making it as strong as a domestic front door It is user friendly and easy to operate It is recommended by social services, healthcare companies and charitable organisations The fitting of every KeySafe helps to supports Age UK Bradford & District Our installer WILL NOT set your code, ensuring total security for you

We are recruiting from GP practices in the Bradford area and you may get a letter through the post if your GP practice is taking part in the study. If so we would like an opportunity for one of our researchers to contact you and tell you more about our study. All the researchers in the CARE study team have lots of experience of carrying out research with older people. The research is being funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR CLAHRC for Yorkshire & Humber). This study is part of a larger programme of research investigating the best way to identify frailty and to manage it in the community. You can find out more about the different studies and the people who are involved at: https:// sites.google.com/a/nihr.ac.uk/clahrcyh/ourthemes/primary-care-based-management-offrailty-in-older-people

Age UK can supply and install the C500 Police Approved KeySafe™ for the unbeatable price of just £80. We can also supply and fit a smaller non Police approved key safe for £65. Call Age UK Bradford & District, Home Services Team on 01274 728259 now to discuss your requirements! A friendly helpful service is guaranteed!

Notes from the IT Project Isn’t “freeware” wonderful? These days you can avoid paying out for programs which are relatively expensive by downloading programs that are capable of achieving virtually the same thing. Most people would still buy a computer or laptop with a “platform” of Windows 7 or 8. Unless you have bought a package the computer will probably come with a “free” trial version of Microsoft Office. This will “expire” after a few months and you will be faced with a one-time bill to pay for your licence. If money is not an issue, then install Microsoft Office. Alternative software like Libre Office or Open Office are good alternatives offering most of the basic functionality of Microsoft Office. Whatever software you choose to create your documents it is worth remembering that these programs are running “on top of” Windows 7 or 8. These programs are sometimes referred to as “platforms”. Microsoft continually improve these and issue updates to fix problems with the programs or security issues so you should regularly run “Windows Update” on your machine to download and install these. When you download Microsoft programs or updates there is often an agreement which you are supposed to read and agree to by clicking the “I agree” box. Many people have become so used to doing this that they do not read what they are signing up to (because it is from the “trusted” Microsoft) and just click on the button. This attitude of “just clicking and not reading” has been exploited by other providers of all kinds of software and particularly freeware. As they say in Yorkshire “you can get summat for nowt” but if that is the case how do these freeware developers earn any money? When you go to their websites they can be quite confusing as there may be many “download here” boxes and you may have trouble finding the correct one. If you click the wrong one you may end up with at best something you did not want or something that can damage your computer. Each time you do this the site is earning money by referring you to another “supplier.” A more subtle and fairly common ruse can be that you select the right download but then have to apparently click on the OK box several times before your software is downloaded. This is where you have to be really careful and read what you are agreeing to. Each time you click OK you are agreeing to another program being added to your download. The chances of at best cluttering up your machine with unwanted junk programs or at worst downloading dangerous malware can be drastically reduced by first reading and if necessary “un-checking” tick boxes and clicking on “DECLINE” several times until you get to the final box which has the required software. So… freeware downloader, beware and if you are going to do this and not pay for virus protection either, make sure you use AVAST or other effective virus software to give you some safety on the web.. Peter Berresford Finance & IT Manager December 2014

Advertising We are very grateful to our advertisers, both for their support to the local charity and to ‘VOICE’, and for their services to older people. However, because we are no longer funded to operate and monitor a Traders Register of services, the appearance of an advert does not mean that we are in a position to endorse the advertiser's goods or monitor services. 16

Our Idle shop celebrated 1 year of opening on December 4th and has been a real success in the local community. To mark the event they held a party in the shop for customers and our team of volunteers which was a great success. There was champagne, an anniversary cake and balloons to make the event special. In Idle, we have quickly built up a regular customer and donor base and there are always fantastic bargains to be had in the shop. We have a large space to fill and have added furniture items to those regularly offered by charity shops. Often a piece of furniture comes in and is sold immediately. Our van driver Barry is always happy to deliver items and regularly comes back with another donation after dropping off the customers purchase! We now have 9 community shops which sell donated clothing, books and bric a brac as well as small electrical items and these are a vital source of funding for the services and products that the Charity aims to deliver. A steady flow of donations is crucial to our shops, many of which are Gift Aided which means we receive a further 25% from HMRC providing the donor is a tax payer. You don’t even have to be working to pay tax and it costs you nothing but can make a huge difference to us. We have volunteer opportunities too which allow people to learn and develop new skills as well as putting into practice those which have been gained through life experience. If you would like to join any of our teams why not call in to your nearest shop for an application pack or call our Head Office on 01274 395144 17

Joint Events in Keighley With the help of Age UK Bradford and District, local groups in Keighley got together recently to host two headline events for Older People. The Association of Ukrainians and The Italian Welfare Association presented the ‘European food exchange’ during which the preparation of Ukrainian delicacies such as ‘Varenicky’ and Kapusta were demonstrated and sampled. The Italian group showed those present how to make Pasta and Wine and brought along a delicious Lasagne. Other European members from Germany, Austria and the former Yugoslavia were present to share in the festivities. Later on December the 4th these groups again got together to share food from their different cultures on their ‘Health and well being day’. A massage therapist came along to soothe the stresses and strains whilst a yoga tutor demonstrated exercises to boost circulation, aid breathing and enhance overall health.

Write and tell us about Your Activities Interests & Concerns ‘Use your Voice !’

Group members enthused about being able to get together with friends from other cultures and share their traditions. It was also a great pleasure to relax and be pampered.

Thanks to Keighley Community First Funding for providing the means to deliver these events. The groups hope to get together next Christmas Time. 18

Funeral Cost Set to Sky Rocket. The average cost of a funeral in the UK has increased for the tenth year in a row, according to an annual survey which has revealed that the main expenses associated with passing away have soared by as much as 80% in the last decade. A significant rise in local authority cremation and burial fees has puched the overall average cost of a basic funeral up to around £3,500.00 If discretionary costs like flowers, probate and headstones are added to this then the total cost of passing away has risen even faster than inflation, now standing at £7,622.00 an overall increase of 7% since 2012. In the last six years burial fees have risen by 69% and cremation fees by 51% now standing at £3914.00 and £2998.00 respectively. It also looks like its not stopping there as research suggests that funeral costs will keep rising at a significant rate. The Age UK Guaranteed funeral plan is the cheapest in the country; the completely secure fund allows individuals to set out their personal requirements, has a one call activation, the ability to pays for ones funeral at todays prices, and reduce family stress at an emotional time. The Idle Friendship Club is a place where people with dementia and their carers can go to find friendship and support. It is held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 10.30 am to 12.00 pm at Idle Baptist Church, Bradford Road, BD10 9PE.

activities that are fun and stimulating, but not overtaxing, based on a theme (such as childhood memories, food, or particular times of the year such as harvest, Easter, Valentine's day). Activities involve a mixture of reminiscence, singing, simple cooking (and eating!) and crafts. The main thing is for people to come and enjoy themselves. Everyone arrives with a warm and friendly smile and there is always plenty of laughter, although due to the challenges of dementia there are sometimes tears too, but the Friendship Club exists to support people through the hard times as well as the good. Sessions are valued by both people with dementia and carers and since we started in September 2013 we have attracted a regular membership and have become like a small community within the community, everyone supporting each other to make the most of life with dementia.

Idle Friendship Club is run by The Memory Tree, a small Community Interest Company (not for profit) based in Shipley. The Memory Tree team is supported by local volunteers who are part of the Dementia Friendly Idle group. The Director of The Memory Tree is Dr Elizabeth Milwain - a research psychologist by training who specialised in dementia in 1996 and now runs specialist community services and support for people with dementia and their carers in the Bradford area. In addition to the Friendship Club at Idle, there are two Memory Clubs that meet in Shipley and one in Keighley. People with dementia and their carers are invited to attend Friendship Club sessions together. Each session involves 45 minutes of informal cafe time, when everyone is together, followed by 45 minutes of Memory Support, for the people with dementia, and Carer Support for the carers in another room. During the Memory Support sessions we run

To find out more please ring Elizabeth Milwain at The Memory Tree on 01274 583364. If Elizabeth is not there then she is out running a Memory Club please leave a message with your name and phone number and she will get back to you. 30
