Voter Accessibility Advisory Committee: Membership and Meeting Calendar

The Secretary of State is requesting your assistance in recruiting members for the statewide Voter Accessibility Advisory Committee (VAAC) and announcing a tentative 2017 meeting calendar. This statewide advisory committee provides support and advice to the Secretary of State and county elections officials on topics related to serving voters with disabilities. Applications due Wednesday, March 1, 2017. While committee membership is limited to appointment, all meetings are open to the public. All interested voters, advocates, and elections officials are welcome to attend and participate. 2017 Meeting Calendar (Dates subject to change) Wednesday, March 15, 2017 – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2017 – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2017 – 1:00 p.m. For more details about the committee and to see an up-to-date calendar, please go to: http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/vaac/. Voting Accessibility Advisory Committee Open application period: February 13, 2017, through March 1, 2017. Position Description The Secretary of State is looking for volunteer committee members to serve on the Voting Accessibility Advisory Committee (VAAC), a statewide advisory committee of disability advocates and elections experts. The VAAC members advise the Secretary of State on issues related to the accessibility of elections for voters with disabilities. They meet regularly in person to discuss upcoming elections, outreach efforts, accessibility guidelines and standards, pending legislation, and emerging technologies. VAAC members and meetings are subject to the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act. This is a volunteer committee. There is no pay, stipend, or reimbursement, for participation in the VAAC. Be willing to serve from appointment through December 31, 2018. Be willing to attend meetings in-person at Sacramento office or by hosting and providing a publicly accessible teleconference location. Have advocacy, outreach, technology, and/or elections experience. Have understanding of barriers faced by voters with disabilities.

While committee membership is limited to appointment, all meetings are open to the public. All interested voters, advocates, and elections officials are welcome to attend and participate.
