Vowel Rule Hop Focus: magic “e” and 2 vowels go walking Magic “e” Rule: Magic “e” hops over 1 consonant and gives all of it’s power to the other vowel to make it say it’s own name (or the name of the letter). 2 Vowels Go Walking Rule: When 2 vowels go walking the first one does the talking. It says it’s own name (or the name of the letter). Directions: 1. Put word cards out on the floor. 2. The students take turns hopping over each word. The students should read each word and tell you which one of the two rules goes with that word. Teaching Questions: 1. What is the word? 2.Which rule goes with that word (magic “e” or 2 vowels go walking) and why? 3. Why can’t we call that word a magic “e” word (or a 2 vowels go walking word)? Variation: 1.
