The Official Fort Riley Officer & Civilian Spouses’ Club Newsletter

The President’s Pen By Bevin Landrum

We all put our are equalizing the equation, many pants on one spouses want to participate in a leg at a time shared club where they can socialize, volunteer and raise funds How often have for Soldiers and their Families you heard that together. We shop at the same saying? In the commissary and PX. Our kids military, certain go to the same schools. We get rules and traditions create the orcare at the same clinics. Howder and structure that make the ever, the waters are still muddy Army function. Rank is one such because some fee-based services component as it ensures order are still provided at a sliding scale and structure both in the office based on rank. Hail & Farewells and on the front line. Unfortuand coffee groups also have nately, it is sometimes projected cut-offs based on sponsor rank onto spouses and dependents; or, making it even more confusing. even worse, assumed by a spouse as his or her own. This is not true. As spouses we operate independently of our sponsor’s rank. This is not to say that general courtesy and good upbringing don’t call us to respect those in leadership positions, but as military spouses we are free to be social with each other just as our civilian counterparts. True, we often find others with similar interests, household situations, ages or places in life, which enriches friendships. But it’s good to remember that there is nothing stopping any military spouse from being friends with each other. So, this brings up the question of why, if we all put our pants on the same way, we can’t be in the same spouse club because of our sponsor’s rank. In the past, the military rank structure was more closely applied to family than today. This created a tradition of separate clubs where spouses of similar ranks and income would be more comfortable with each other. Now that education, dual-income families and deployment camaraderie

We want to be alike, but the same social factors that apply to the civilian world affect us, too. The good news is that the rules and paradigms are changing and successful, visionary military spouse clubs around the world are responding with flexible, innovative and inclusive solutions. The time is NOW for a discussion about our future. In coming months, the OCSC will be working towards an inclusive community club solution at Fort Riley. This has been a topic of back-burner discussion for years. We believe that the moment is right to begin working together towards successfully opening our club to all supporters of the Fort Riley military community by implementing a paced transition strategy. More information about the proposed changes and timeline will be made available at the March luncheon. If you wish to have a vote in the proposed changes to the OCSC Consti-

tution and By-Laws, please attend the luncheon on March 15. After our board meeting on March 8, more complete details will be distributed, so you have time to review and develop feedback before the luncheon. The only thing constant in life is change, but that doesn’t make it any less daunting or scary. We want whatever change transpires from this open dialogue to benefit a strong spouse and community club that will continue to be relevant to the social fabric of Fort Riley through its commitment to philanthropy, mentorship and social networking. We don’t want to do it like everyone else. We don’t want to force an unrealistic timeline on our changes. We do want to encourage the free exchange of ideas, an environment of respect, and inclusive participation from all spouses and community supporters. Please be open-minded. The only way for this new, inclusive solution to succeed is if all Fort Riley spouses and supporters back the model and roll up their sleeves to work together to make it happen. The only reason we’re here is because our spouses work, worked for or support the military; and whether they wear chevrons, dots, bars, ties, leaves, birds, or stars – we all put our pants on one leg at a time. We need an energized volunteer base full of committed community partners to pull this off in fine Duty First fashion. How does the Victory Community Club sound? Dust off your thinking caps and join the conversation! - Bevin

Good Deeds: The Heart of OCSC

By Sara Nauman

As we come together every month to enjoy good friends, good food, and fun programs, we also come together to help organizations in our local community. OCSC members have donated thousands of dollars to local organizations between August and February. To date, through our Community Assistance Jars and Operation Santa Claus Toy drive, we have given $3,425 to local organizations. The organizations we have helped so far this year are: Mother’s Outreach, Habitat for Humanity’s Homes for Heroes, Operation Santa Claus, and Operation Homefront. The generosity of our club members and their guests at each luncheon is a great example of the heart of OCSC and our desire to help others.

GO RED Luncheon in Review By Amanda Bartholome

The combination of a brilliant guest speaker, a fabulous competition and outstanding community support made the seventh luncheon in our 20112012 line-up a heart warming success! All who attended enjoyed the entertaining and educational presentation made by Dr Nadig, an American Board of Internal Medicine certified Cardiologist at Mercy Regional Hospital. General Member Ginny Fricks was surprised to learn that heart disease research is male-focused even though it is the leading killer of women. Board member Savina Ford learned that women need to be more pro-active during check-ups to ensure that the doctor is properly considering signs and symptoms as they relate to the health of our heart. The haunting video and startling statistics that Dr. Nadig shared regarding the effects of smoking will make us think twice before even putting ourselves in second-handsmoke situations. If you were unable to attend the luncheon then please visit w w w. h e a r t . org for more information; because, as Tiffany Ream pointed out, our husbands can’t live without us! The GO RED outfit competition was a fierce one! Participation ranged from fabulous formal dresses to creative t-shirts, with a mixture in between of thematic accessories. I’m glad that we brought in outside judges because the dazzling sea of red made for a tough decision even before the catwalk came in to play! Congratulations to Savina Ford for winning the certificate to Shear Dynamics! Thank you to all who participated in the competition! Thanks to the generosity of our vendors, we had 10 hospitality prizes from which to choose! In all, there were 16 separate chances to win a fabulous prize at the GO Red luncheon. With 90 people in attendance that meant the odds were 1 in 4 that you’d walk out a winner! Be sure Facebook

Valentine’s Day Lunch at the USO At our January luncheon, we raised $200 to help the USO provide free lunches to soldiers and their families. We also volunteered to help serve lunch on Valentine’s Day. We served about 100 soldiers, some of whom didn’t even realize it was Valentine’s! Thank you to Heather Drake, Amanda Bartholome, Bevin Landrum, Lori Rohzon, and Savina Ford for taking time to serve some of our local heroes.

Ooops! Operator error! Due to a glitch in the operating environment for the layout and format of the membership directory, some of the cities do not match the zip code in the recently distributed directories. The problem only exists in last names starting with H-Z. Please verify the info is correct before mailing a hard copy of anything to a fellow OCSC member. The zip codes are correct. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope email and phone are the preferred methods of communication! As always, we are but human volunteers.

Childcare Policy REMINDER! We have a NEW EMAIL address for all future reservation requests: [email protected] Infants 6 weeks of age or younger may attend luncheons. In addition, we extend a courtesy to mothers of nursing infants six months or younger to the luncheon. In all circumstance, we simply ask you to step out of the event if your child is crying. Please do not bring children older than this as they may be a distraction to other members. Infants 6 weeks to 12 years are welcome to have reservations in the STACC on-site daycare. STACC care is provided at our monthly luncheons at a reasonable cost with advance reservations. The price is $5.00 per hour per child. Care is available from 11am to 1pm. It is the parent’s responsibility to feed their children before the luncheon (if there is a lunch served, parents will be notified in advance). The deadline for reservations is 2 weeks prior to the luncheon. Cancellations are accepted up to 48 hours before the luncheon. Please remember to bring shot records for each child and appropriate items your child will need during the two hour time frame (pull-ups, extra outfit, bottles, wipes, etc). Bottles must be pre-made and kept cold. Baby food must be brought in un-opened jars. Please remember closed toe shoes for the safety of your child. Please

Meet the Board: Sabrina Waters Sabrina grew up in Pascagoula, MS, and went to college at Southeast Missouri State University where she met her husband Ryan. In 1994 they married and moved to St. Louis, MO, where they spent two years as (gasp!) civilians. Sabrina worked as a bank teller and attended St. Louis Community College studying education. In 1997, Ryan joined the Army and they headed to Fort Huachuca, AZ. While there, Sabrina attended The University of Arizona. When Ryan got orders to Korea, Sabrina remained in AZ to complete her BA in History. In 1999, they PCSed to Fort Campbell, where Sabrina returned to working in banking and completed a teacher certification program at Austin Peay State University. In 2001, it was back to Fort Huachuca. Soon after their arrival, Ryan got orders to Germany (yay!) but concurrent travel was disapproved (boo), so Sabrina moved to Houston, TX, and taught middle school Social Studies. The following year Sabrina joined Ryan in Germany. She traveled all over Europe, shopped in Poland and the Czech Republic, and volunteered as an FRG leader with 101 MI BN, an Army Family Team Building instructor and an AFAP proctor. Sabrina also worked as a tax preparer. In 2005 Ryan and Sabrina joined the Big Red One at Fort Riley. Sabrina volunteered as an FRG leader and Funds custodian with B Co 4-1 BSTB and an AFTB instructor. She was also active with the Junior League of the Flint Hills and worked as a background investigator with USIS completing government security clearance investigations. When Ryan was transferred to the National Capital Region for a fellowship, Sabrina continued her job with USIS in Northern Virginia. This past December, Ryan and Sabrina returned to Fort Riley. They’ve been back for only a short time, but Sabrina is thrilled to be back in Manhattan. She is active in Junior League of the Flint Hills, the OCSC, and works as a GED instructor at the Adult Learning Center in Manhattan. In her free time Sabrina enjoys cooking (and eating), running, playing with her three dogs (Buster, Maggie and Teddy), volunteering, doing projects around the house and spending time on their boat. 7

Volunteers of the Month General Member Volunteer of the Month (Feb 2012): Kristen Danbeck Kristen found time in her busy family and unit schedule to serve as our Volunteer Coordinator for Casino Royale. In this capacity she worked with our membership and community partner groups to find volunteers who could assist with decorations, gaming, check-in, ticket sales, publicity, and other positions. Kristen brought her unique personality to the task and was an immense help in recruiting all the people it took to pull of a successful event. Kudos to Kristen!

Board Member Volunteer of the Month (Feb 2012): Savina Ford Savina started the year wearing two hats as Reservations and Publicity Chairs. In the last few months, she has completely focused on Publicity efforts to ensure that Casino Royale was well advertised in the area. Thanks to her efforts we received outstanding newspaper and radio coverage. She oversaw the insertion of 4,000 flyers in the Picerne newsletter, distribution of posters in Manhattan and Junction City, and made sure we had road signs and banners up on post at strategic locations. Her countless hours of help are part of what made the Casino Royale committee such a successful team effort. Thank you, Savina! We will miss you next year, but wish you well in Oregon on your new adventures. 9

Missing Your Shades? Someone left a nice pair of women’s Ray Ban sunglasses at the first OCSC luncheon in August. We’ve brought them every month to the luncheon, but no one has claimed them. If you are missing your sunglasses, please contact our membership chair, Megan Byer, to claim your prize!

Thanks to our community partner, RSVP of the Flint Hills for hosting a wonderful Father Daughter Sweetheart Dance last month. Many military daddies were able to take their pint sized sweethearts to this special dance. Hope it will be an annual event! 10
