The President’s Pen By Bevin Landrum

Live Life Fully I’m writing these thoughts from the sunny world of Florida. I don’t say that to make anyone jealous of a mid-October dipping of my toes in the still warm ocean, but rather to showcase the reason for my trip to the coast. My dad just celebrated his 90th birthday with friends and family at his side. This a great milestone to reach in life’s journey and his continuing vigor makes me consider a few points worthy of review for everyone as we wake to each new day. Within the past week, I’ve had a couple of friends talk to me about their struggles to cope with deployment. None of them are strangers to the rigors of separation, but each deployment brings a different set of challenges. Indeed, during the wartime separations of WWII and Korea, my parents’ stories of challenge would stop us all in our tracks. Months on end with NO communication--no Skype, no email, not even snail mail. Mom almost died of typhoid before Dad could get home. Dad’s unit was caught behind Chinese lines in Korea. Stillborn babies, drives across the Mojave with no air conditioning and the unceremonious announcement from housing that she had two days to move out of quarters after dad deployed to Korea. But you know what? Now, when I ask them about those hardships, they laugh and smile fondly because those moments in time have become distant memories

and good stories. They both have lived life so fully, even in the midst of separation, that they filled their book of lore with enough action for a lifetime. We recently bid a PCS farewell to an OCSC member who was at Fort Riley for nearly a decade. I know Brenda will be missed and that she will miss her time here. Sometimes, when we face the moment of driving away from our “home,” it can be heartbreaking to bid farewell to friends, neighbors, activities and the routine of life as we know it. It’d be easy to hold our hearts and fellowship a little tighter at the next duty station to avoid the inevitable moment of the next goodbye. But when we accept this crazy slice of life, we are guaranteed a rich tapestry of friends across the world. It would be hard to endure Army life without our circle of support. Each morning, as you wake up, take a moment to appreciate the day ahead - it holds another chance to embrace life and those around us. Whether twenty, forty, sixty or ninety, live life fully and make memories to last a lifetime. Thanksgiving is unbelievably just around the corner. The OCSC Board and I wish your family the very best of holidays - full of rich tradition, fellowship and delicious hospitality. All the best,

Bevin Landrum OCSC President

Good Deeds: Volunteers of the Quarter Hats off to our OCSC Board Members for receiving Volunteer of the Quarter recognition! Thanks to them - and ALL of our board and member volunteers - for helping to make Fort Riley a great post for Army families!

Megan Byer

As membership chair, Megan is one of the first people our members meet and she always makes a great first impression. She answers general questions about cost, benefits, eligibility and process and is timely in all her communications and maintenance of club records.

The first quarter of the club year is very time-intensive for membership. Megan has already processed 154 applications - the bulk of our annual memberships! She also did an outstanding job of renewing our member discounts and implementing a window cling option for participating businesses to promote their support of OCSC. Megan’s easygoing attitude helps build camaraderie with our members.

Theresa Giesey

Our website and social media platforms are a vital part of letting the public know that OCSC is officially an open all ranks club. The webmaster’s role is to make our web site engaging and keep it current. Theresa does just that and manages a closed group Facebook page for “members only” as well as our open-tothe-public fan page. Through her expert management we have added 200 new fans in just the past three months! Additionally, Theresa built an online store with credit card payment options for our Ways and Means sales and flocking. (Both should be live by the time you read this!) Theresa helped bring our organization into the digital age by setting up online registration forms and implementing a program to streamline our check-in process using an iPad application that allows us to accept credit card payments at luncheons. Her service to the board is in its second year and she is an integral part of our team.

Jennifer Sargent

Jennifer Sargent represents the best of volunteerism because she routinely carries out her role with little supervision, a great attitude and always on time. In addition, she always offers to help other members with their tasks and provides great support to the overall team. Newsletter Distribution isn’t what you’d call a glamorous position with all the folding and stuffing and doing labels (oh my!). But it is a very important position because it sets in motion the delivery of one of our prime communication pieces for the organization: this newsletter. Our members and advertisers depend on its timely delivery and Jennifer makes it happen each month.

Memory Lane: 1966 White Elephant Auction

Through volunteer service and donations, OCSC has a rich history of giving back to the community dating all the way back to our founding in 1953. Pictured here are members Mrs. Swan, Mrs. Hillner and Mrs.Watson who assisted at a White Elephant Auction on April 21, 1966.

Good Deeds: You Can Make a Difference! Flock for Good

OCSC flamingoes are not only festive and fun, but they’re also philanthropic! Send a flock and support the fight against breast cancer. Funds raised from flocking will go to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center and K-State’s Johnson Cancer Research Center. It’s not too late to get the flock out! Our Mother Flockers will arrange to have eager lawns adorned with festive pink birds, no matter the season! Now it’s even easier to flock. You can submit your request from the comfort of your own nest. Just visit our website at www.fortrileyocsc.com/home/flocking and fill out the simple form to let the Mother Flockers know where to steer the flock. Then use our secure payment method via PayPal to complete your request. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact us at: [email protected].

Operation Santa Claus

It is that time of year again... time for Operation Santa Claus, a program that helps to provide soldiers in need with toys for their children at Christmas time! Last year we raised more than $80,000 in toys and cash. This year we have expanded the program to include Reservists and Guardsmen as well. Because of this addition, we anticipate needing 1,000 more toys than were donated last year. Once again, OCSC is playing a major role in Operation Santa Claus. Last year, as a club we donated nearly $2,000 in toys and cash, and were a major source of volunteers. We will have a table set up at the November and December luncheons to collect toys. For EACH toy you donate, you will receive an Opportunity Drawing Ticket! There is NO LIMIT on how many you can bring! So, if you bring 10 toys, you get 10 tickets... it’s that simple!

Op Santa Needs You!

• Our fundraising goal is $100,000 in cash and/or in-kind (toy) donations.

• We anticipate needing 5,000 new toys, averaging $15-20 in value. • Volunteers are welcome to assist in the collecting, organizing, distributing, and wrapping of the toys. • As always, monetary donations will be accepted all year round.

We will also be signing up volunteers to work in the toy shop during the “Shopping” days in December. We will need toy shop escorts and gift wrappers. Please contact our Op Santa Chairs Jennifer Cagle at [email protected] or Kerry Manneck at [email protected] if you have any questions, or want to help out!

Meet Jessica

Ever wonder what magical fairy makes our luncheon centerpieces so spectacular each month? That would be Jessica Tesauro, who is in charge of all things OCSC decor! Jessica definitely has a creative flair both personally and as our Decorations Chair. Here are a few interesting tidbits about Jessica: * Favorite post so far: Ft Riley * Favorite thing to do in Kansas: I like to find different places to go to and hang out and see the beautiful scenes... also to watch how the sunflowers grow and bloom! * Favorite local restaurant: Harrys is definitely a good one, and I love Doughboys!! * What’s in your DVR: Criminal Minds and Duck Dynasty! * What would you do with an afternoon all to yourself? Well seeing as how I have many afternoons with myself... Pretty much just hang out and have me time and try to just do nothing lol

OCSC Book Club

Join us for our first ever Book Club meeting! On Nov. 14 at 10am we will be discussing Homeland by Barbara Hambly. Each month we will pick a new book to discuss over potluck. Please contact our coordinator, Madeline Lafleur, at [email protected] if you are interested and would like to know the meeting location. We hope to see you there! 6

www.fortrileyocsc.com

Meet Colleen

Colleen Murphy truly is a wonder. As the OCSC Property Manager, she tracks all of our building supplies and inventory. Without Colleen, we’d all be running around wondering where the heck everything is! While she keeps things under control, she also likes to let loose and can always be found with a smile on her face and something delightfully wacky to wear. Here are some fun factoids about Colleen: * Favorite post so far: Fort Rucker, super close to home and family :-) * Favorite thing to do in Kansas: Anything outdoors, I love boating, fishing, gardening, and playing with my chickens! * Favorite local restaurant: Harrys * What’s in your DVR: Game of Thrones, True Blood, Army Wives, Teen Mom, Biggest Loser, and Project Runway * What would you do with an afternoon all to yourself? Spa day, or maybe curl up in bed with wine and my kindle!!

Meet Leslie

Every few months, Leslie Alford has great suggestions for things to see and do in the area. (Check out her article for tips on fall festivities on page 10!) And it’s no wonder... Leslie is our Community Liaison. She works with local groups like area Chambers of Commerce and always knows what’s going on. In addition to being a military spouse, Leslie is a former military member herself! Here are a few other things you might not know about Leslie: * Favorite post so far: It’s either Ft Riley...or the Sinai, Egypt...or Baghdad in 2003... My husband (who is also an OCSC member) and I were lucky enough to be stationed together in Egypt AND in Baghdad...great fun...how many couples have been to war actually together?? * Favorite thing to do in Kansas: Sit on my porch and watch the sunrise /sunset on Konza Prairie....you all ought to check out Konza Prairie Biological Station’s public hiking trails, especially in the spring during wildflower season. Or in the fall, when the deer, turkeys, and other animals are plentiful to see! * Favorite local restaurant: The Chef for breakfast. El Tapatio for Mexican. Harry’s for a nice meal with your sweetie! * What’s in your DVR: Oh...The Big C. True Blood (what possibly has more angles than this show???), Weeds, and my very favorite - NCIS:)! * What would you do with an afternoon all to yourself? Work on my photography for a while, followed by reading a good book, that turns into a nap, followed by a nice walk in the pasture with my dogs, and culminating with a leisurely dinner... somewhere...and coffee up on the ridge at sunset!

Good Times We’ve Had “HOOAH for the Hooters” BUNKO Event

The first annual “HOOAH for the Hooters” Bunko for the Cure fundraising event included both tears and laugher. Tears were shed when the reality that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer within their lifetime hit home. But we found our smiles again as we rolled dice and mingled our way through a sea of pink, joining together to fight a disease that has affected our friends and families. With generous donations from our members and dedicated community sponsors, we raised $1,100 in support of local breast cancer research, education and treatment. The Tammy Walker Cancer Center in Salina and the Johnson Cancer Research Center at K-State were the two local centers chosen to benefit from the evening event. Both of these centers can be found on Facebook by searching their names.

In addition to raising funds, our ‘Save the Ta-Tas’ event helped ‘Give Cancer the Boot’ as survivors and fighters shared their personal battles with breast cancer.Through their stories we learned that cancer can hit at any age and anytime. If you are over the age of 20, you need to be conducting monthly self-exams.Visit www.nationalbreastcancer.org to learn more about breast cancer and how to properly complete a self exam.

Cupcake Wars Recap

With 100 members and guests in attendance, the October luncheon was a sweet success! We enjoyed mingling with new members, shopping vendor tables and satisfying our sweet teeth with a few rounds of cupcake sampling. Community Assistance included a cash donation to “Give an Hour” as well as a collection of coats for our “One Warm Coat” Drive. A specialTHANKYOU goes out to our eight fantastic judges who diligently sampled 28 different cupcakes and awarded eighteen prizes in a variety of categories. It was a sugary job, but someone had to do it! Be sure to check out more pictures of the delicious cupcake submissions on our Facebook page.

Mingle Like You Mean It

It’s always great to see the new faces of our military community and we want to thank all the members who came out to make our first ever quarterly new member mingle event a great success! Eighteen members gathered at dellaVoce for food, fellowship and a little name game challenge. Some folks were very new to Fort Riley and others were joining OCSC for the first time. The mix of experiences and stories shared around the table made for a fun, enlightening and chatty evening. A few stalwart attendees closed the place down as a final farewell to one of our members who is PCSing. While this is not really an “out with the old, in with the new” event, it served as a great reminder that there is always a wonderful group waiting to welcome you somewhere out there. Our next member mingle is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 8, but stay tuned for more details. Our mingles provide a great way to get to know fellow members and the board on a more personal level, so if you’re new to OCSC we hope to see you there!

Good Times to Come MIBIFI: Donation Request

November Luncheon Preview: Make It, Bake It, Fake It By Amanda Bartholme

The November luncheon is designed to get your creative juices flowing. Whether you’re crafty like Martha Stewart, bake like Betty Crocker, or shop like Paris Hilton, this event is for you!

Start your planning for November’s Make It, Bake It, Fake It (MIBIFI): our fall fundraiser luncheon where your creativity will help benefit military families. For this luncheon we are asking attendees to donate an item made, baked or faked. Here’s how: Make It (show your crafty skills with some fabulous DIY); Bake It (channel your inner Iron Chef and concoct something worthy of Cordon Bleu or Paula Dean); or Fake It (why try when you can buy?)! All of the donated items will be offered as opportunity prizes or included in our silent auction. There are so many chances to win. Simply drop your tickets in your favorite items’ containers for a chance to win. Get a jump start on holiday shopping or find something fabulous just for you.! Please consider bringing an item to donate in November. Last year’s MIBIFI luncheon raised over $2K for our Community Assistance disbursements to help programs that benefit the Fort Riley military community. Have fun and do good! We also are accepting donations from coffee groups and units who would like to donate. If you or your group would like to make a group donation, please email Sabrina Waters at fundraising@for trileyocsc.com or call her at 636-352-6823. November 2012

For this luncheon we ask that you either: Make It, show your crafty skills with a homemade blanket, a cute centerpiece, or ANYTHING, just get creative; Bake It, pull out Grandma’s best recipe; or Fake It by purchasing something fun to contribute! All of the donated items will be offered as opportunity prizes or included in our silent auction. Last year’s MIBIFI luncheon raised over $2K to go towards programs that benefit the Fort Riley military community... AND it was a ton of fun! Regardless of whether your ticket number is drawn, everybody wins! In addition to the MIBIFI portion of the luncheon, we will have other opportunities to win. Wearing your membership pin this month will earn you an entry in our membership drawing, sponsored by the McCain. If your spouse is deployed then don’t pass up your chance to win a gift certificate to Headlines or The Mane Thing. Plus browse the vendor tables, including:Valata, Doodle Bug Nails, Jewels By Park Lane, Jane Wayne Gear, Scentsy and Marinello Schools of Beauty. Two local non-profit groups will also have items for sale: Central Kansas Military Community Foundation will be selling commemorative Fort Riley ornaments and HASFR will be pre-selling Tour of Homes tickets. Operation Santa is our featured charity of the month. In addition to accepting cash donations via our community assistance jars, we will also be accepting toy donations on behalf of Operation Santa Claus. For toy donations, each toy that you bring earns you an opportunity ticket to win a prize donated by a local sponsor. See page 5 for more information on Op Santa. This month we’ll dine on Caesar salad, grilled chicken, vegetable lasagna, mac & cheese, balsamic grilled vegetables, breadsticks and warm apple pie. We look forward to seeing you on November 15!

Upcoming Luncheons

December: Dirty Santa Gift Exchange Join us for a down-and-dirty game of Dirty Santa. Bring a wrapped gift - as traditional or wacky as you want - with a $10 value. The greater the variety of wrapped gifts the more fun it will be to play our game.

January: The Price Is Right What better way to start the year off “RIGHT” than with a game of The Price is Right? Tables will compete against each other in a prize showcase to remember. Whether you like it Bob Barker or Drew Carey style, you’re sure to have fun. Grab a friend and come on down! 9

Things to See & Do

By Leslie Alford

Did anyone notice there’s an ELECTION coming up? MAKE SUREYOU ARE REGISTERED, AND GET OUT AND VOTE. It does not matter whether you vote in person, absentee ballot or even carrier pigeon if that’s your thing (although we don’t recommend the pigeon route). Just make your voice heard! Aside from selecting our next POTUS, what ELSE is going on? Winter is coming, but for now we are having some wonderful autumn weather. Get out and enjoy it before it DOES turn into a frigid Kansas winter. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

HASFR Tour of Homes

The Historical and Archeological Society of Fort Riley (HASFR) is excited to present the 29th Annual Tour of Homes on Dec. 1 from 12-4pm. Transport yourself to days gone by as you tour five beautiful historic homes (all fully decorated for the holidays), the Custer House and two Main Post chapels. The tour begins at the Custer House and is self-guided. Tickets are $10 on the day-of at the Christkindl Market and the Custer House. The tour is not recommended for children under 10 and tickets are required for all visitors. Please contact Jessica New ([email protected] / 785-717-2819) or Kristy Crombie ([email protected] / 706-575-7926) with questions or if you want to volunteer. We look forward to seeing you on the Tour!

Fall provides an excellent chance to catch the K-State Wildcats in action on the football field. Nov.ember 3 will feature a special military theme, but games run all season. Check out schedules, prices and more - not just for football but all K-State sports - at www.kstatesports.com. How about an outing at Sunset Zoo? It’s not too late to enjoy a fall afternoon communing with the animals there! Oh, and to get ready for Thanksgiving, there are a couple of fun runs going on. The Rock Springs Turkey Trot is a 5K scheduled on Nov 17 (www.rocksprings.net for more info) and there’s a Turkey 2 Miler right on Fort Riley that same day (www.rileymwr.com). Don’t forget Junction City’s primary annual funraiser…oh, did I say FUNraiser? I meant fundraiser, but it’s a lot of fun, too. The Junction Function, open to Chamber members (which OCSC members are, folks!) begins at 6pm on Nov. 10. For more info, check out their website (www.junctioncitychamber.org).This year’s them eis“Olympiad”and reservations are due by Nov.5. Reservation Policy

This year’s luncheons will be held at Riley’s Conference Center unless otherwise noted. The cost is $15 per person. 1. DEADLINE: Reservations are accepted until noon on the Friday prior to the luncheon. (Next Reservation Deadline is November 7th at noon!) If you miss the deadline, you can always call the Reservations chair to see if we have had any cancellations. 2. CANCELLATIONS: If cancellations are made after the reservations deadline, members will still be responsible for paying for their meal or finding a member substitute to take their place. Invoices will be sent out by the Reservations chair each month to late cancellations and no shows. 3. GUEST RESERVATIONS: When a member makes a reservation for a guest and the guest is a no-show or cancels after the deadline, that member is responsible for the payment of the guest’s meal. INCLEMENT WEATHER: Notification of a luncheon cancellation will be posted on the website and on Facebook the morning of the luncheon. Emails will also be sent when possible.

The official OCSC child attendance policy is that only infants six weeks or younger may attend luncheons. We also extend a courtesy to mothers of nursing infants six months or younger that are welcome to bring baby with them. Please do not bring children older than this as they may be a distraction to other members. We offer on-site STACC care at our monthly luncheons at a reasonable cost with advance reservations. The price is $5 per hour per child. Care is available from 11am to 1pm. The deadline for reservations is 1 week before the luncheon. Cancellations are accepted until 48 hours before the luncheon. Also, bring appropriate items your child will need during the two-hour time frame (pull-ups, extra outfit, bottles, wipes, etc). Bottles must be pre-made and kept cold.
