WRITE FOR RIGHTS

HOLDING EVENTS

Aim: Get as many signatures with email addresses on your petitions as possible. Purpose: To create change in the lives of the people we are campaigning for! Read more about these people on the provided casesheets.

To continue helping these people and others, we need to build our human rights movement. The more people we can communicate with, the stronger we are, and the more lives we will save. That’s why collecting email addresses is also important.

START PLANNING YOUR EVENTS

• Bring your pets whenever you can

• Arrange with your action centre to collect or have petitions, info flyers, pens etc sent to you • Set up on the day and away you go! • Snap a photo of your petitions when they are complete and email your photo to [email protected]

• Take photos of all the animals with the #HumanRightsArePawesome poster and upload to social media.

Call your local supermarket or café and ask to have a table at the front of their shop.

• Remember to get as many emails as you can. Remind people they will go into the draw for a pet accessory bandana.

• Arrange a day and time to set up for a few hours.

All events • Key dates: 25 November – 10 December (World Human Rights Day)

• Hand out the activity booklet

• Weekends or lunch times during the week are good.

Tip: Check what’s happening locally. If an event is already happening, it’s easier to book a stall there and you’ll reach more people too.

• Make it easy for yourselves; just have a small table and stay for a few hours. If you have enough people, you can do this a few times between 25 November and 10 December.

Events, markets, festivals:

• Register your event!

• As soon as you find out they are on, email or call the organisers and ask to have a stall or table at the event. • They will often ask about insurance – yes we have it! Download the insurance document here. • Register your event! • Send a media release to your local media

• Send a media release to your local media • Arrange to collect or have petitions, info flyers, pens etc sent to you • Set up on the day and away you go! • Snap a photo of your petitions when they are complete and email to [email protected]

BLITZING What is it? How do you do it? • Blitzing means going out to a major thoroughfare (Train stations, city / town centers etc) with a few people with petitions for a few hours. • It’s a good way to collect actions quickly. • Be prepared to have loads of people walk past – that’s OK!

• Arrange a day and time with the people who will be with you. Never blitz alone – always have at least one buddy, even if you’re across the street from each other. Just keep an eye out so you know you’re both OK. • Weekends, lunch times or after work during the week are good. • Make it easy for yourselves; just have a small table and stay for a few hours. If you have enough people, you can blitz a few times between 25 November and 10 December.

• At other times people will come right up to you and want to sign.

• Sunscreen, a hat and water are essentials!

How do I blitz?

• If you have time, send a media release to your local media

Find out where you can be in your city, suburb or town without needing a permit.

• Arrange to collect or have petitions, info flyers, pens etc sent to you

Firstly, call your local council:

• Have the 'keep your coins, we want change' posters with you so people know why you’re there.

• Ask them what public spaces you’re allowed to set up a small table or have one or two people standing with information and petitions on human rights. • There are usually a few places where the public are allowed to do this kind of thing without needing a permit.

• Register your event!

• Set up on the day and away you go! • Snap a photo of your petitions when they are complete and email your photo to [email protected]

• It might be at the top of a mall (usually not inside the mall) or on the street outside a train station (but usually not directly in front of the train station). • You might need to prompt the person at the council by asking if it’s okay to set up without a permit at a specific place you that think would be good. • There may be restrictions eg. only two people or a table no bigger than one metre. • When you know where those places are, you can go there anytime and blitz! You don’t need to get permission. • If you do need a permit for the place you want to go, your council will be able to give you a form to fill out.
