Wessex Archaeology (WA) acknowledges the need for a high standard of photographic imaging for all types of projects undertaken. WA aims to produce high quality imaging in a format appropriate both for the specific project and for the creation of an easily accessible photographic archive. The creation of the photographic archive begins at project initiation. Any project, according to its size and nature, may generate a photographic archive which may include still images, Xradiograph plates and moving images. For any type of image, a consistent archive procedure must be followed in order to ensure the integrity and accessibility of the archive. The recent announcement that Fujifilm, the only remaining manufacturers of colour transparency (slide) film, have stopped producing ISO 400 film has led WA to develop a new photographic and imaging policy. This announcement serves to reinforce the growing vulnerability of film as a photographic medium and WA believes that as an industry we must make plans for the future rather than react to circumstances forced upon us. While the archival stability of digital imaging has not yet been proven to the same degree as film, there is now considered to be no advantage of analogue over digital imaging as an archival format. Any archive requires appropriate management to ensure its survival, and with digital information there is no reason why it cannot be preserved indefinitely. Digital imaging in fact provides a number of benefits, such as multiple backups, ease of access and considerable space savings. A properly managed digital photographic work flow also ensures a higher quality photographic record. Problems with equipment, incorrect exposure or focus, blurred images, cluttered edges and poor depth of field can all be spotted during the course of a project and corrected. It is also possible to backup images at any time during a project. With analogue photography there is no way to guarantee a quality record has been produced, or that a set of images are safe, until the film has been developed. Finally, digital only photography offers a significant time and cost saving over the use of film and its adoption will therefore benefit the industry as a whole. With the above in mind, WA policy will be to rely on digital imaging to provide the sole photographic archive for any Terrestrial Fieldwork or Built Heritage project in England and Wales. This policy is in line with standards produced by English Heritage, the Institute for Archaeologists, the Archaeological Archives Forum and the London Archaeological Archive Research Centre. Images will be captured in a RAW format using cameras with manual controls and sensors of at least 10 megapixels. Images will then be converted to uncompressed baseline v.6 TIFF for archiving. All images will have accompanying metadata specifying; photo ID, capture device, converting software, colour space, bit depth, resolution, date of capture, photographer, caption, and any alterations made to the image. As part of this policy, provision will be made for the long term archiving of digital images with the Archaeological Data Service. X-radiographs will continue to be used for metalwork and other finds as appropriate (e.g. human and animal bone). These may be generated by WA staff, or by external specialists.
