2. UNIT 2

Human Biology: Chemistry of Life Science is, I believe, nothing but trained and organized common sense. —T. H. Huxley (1825–1895)

Objectives After doing this unit's work you should: 1. Understand the concept of matter. 2. Know the structure of the atom and what causes atoms to form bonds. You will know what an ion and isotope are. 3. Know the types of bonds. 4. Understand the concept of pH and how pH relates to living systems. 5. Know the properties of water. 6. Know what functional groups are and how the three dimensional structure of molecules determine how they behave. 7. Know the structure and function of the four macromolecules.

Guided Practice 1. What is an element? 2. What are the three components of an atom? Draw a picture of an oxygen atom. Label each of the 3 components. 3. What is an ion? Name two ways that an element can become an ion. 4. Many elements have isotopes. How do isotopes differ from each other? How are they the same? 5. What are the three types of chemical bonds? Compare their strengths relative to each other. 6. What are the 6 properties of water? Define the following terms: hydrophilic, hydrophobic, cohesive, adhesive. 7. Why is it important to biological systems that ice floats? 8. Describe the pH scale. What is the approximate pH of a soft drink? Baking soda? Which is considered acidic and which is basic?

9. What is a functional group? Give an example. 10. What are the 4 main categories of organic compounds (macromolecules)? 11. Give the structure and function of each of the 4 molecules. 12. How do the 4 levels of protein folding relate to one another? 13. Why is it important to life that phospholipids have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail?

Unit 2: Chemistry of Life 14. What is the basic component of all carbohydrates? 15. What properties of DNA allow it to replicate itself?
