Weekly Incident Summary January 9-15, 2017 HALTON HILLS, ON – Monday, January 9, 2017 09:39 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a structure fire in the area of Highway 7 and Sixth Line in Guelph-Eramosa. Halton Regional Police were on scene upon arrival. On scene fire staff noted a large building with visible smoke showing. Fire staff began applying water into an opening of the building. Rockwood Fire Deputy Chief arrived on scene and it was agreed that Halton Hills Fire would provide support until Rockwood apparatus arrived. Tanker 1 remained on scene for water supply. Tuesday, January 10, 2017 09:44 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Elmore Drive in Acton. Halton Regional Police were on scene upon arrival. Fire staff provided patient care until ambulance arrived. 17:40 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a single vehicle motor vehicle collision on Tenth Line between 5 and 10 Sideroad. Halton Regional Police were on scene and advised fire was not required. 23:42 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a vehicle fire on Nelles St in Acton. On scene fire staff found one vehicle fully involved with a second vehicle starting to catch fire. Fire crews extinguished the fire. Wednesday, January 11, 2017 14:37 Hours - Fire fighters responded to the report of smoke in a building on Mountainview Rd N. On scene fire staff entered the building and found smoke coming in the building from the HVAC system, caused by tar roof repair. Both store manager and contractor were advised to coordinate the shutdown of the HVAC system while work is being done. Thursday, January 12, 2017 01:33 Hours - Fire fighters responded to a public assist on Langstone Cres. Basement tenant had a leak from a window well at the rear of the home. Fire staff dug a small trench to try and help the water move away from the foundation. The tenant was advised to contact the homeowner to contact their insurance company. 14:46 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation, with symptoms, on Durham Street. Ambulance was on scene upon arrival, transporting one patient to the hospital. Fire staff checked the 5th Floor with no CO readings found. A

low battery in the CO detector was found. Crews changed the battery and re-installed the detector. Friday, January 13, 2017 05:24 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Holmesway Place in Acton. Halton Regional Police were on scene upon arrival. A pot left on the stove had created light smoke that was contained to the apartment area. Fire staff ventilated the smoke, gathered information and allowed the tenant back into the apartment. 10:33 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of Guelph St and Windsor Road. Fire assisted ambulance with patient care and cleared the scene. 15:43 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Maple Ave. Fire staff checked the surrounding area and no fire or other concerns were found. Saturday, January 14, 2017 01:10 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Argyll Rd. On scene fire staff entered the home and using detectors found zero readings. The detector was determined to be faulty. Fire staff replaced the unit with a new one and cleared the scene. 04:26 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of Mountainview Rd S & Campbell Gate. Halton Regional Police and ambulance were on scene upon arrival. Crews disabled the vehicle and applied absorbant to leaking fluids. 04:44 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Delrex Blvd. On scene fire staff met with the homeowners who advised that their CO detector had been going off. Crews entered the home and using detectors found initial readings of 32 ppm of CO. Fire staff investigated, ventilated the residence, and reduced the readings back down to 0ppm. The homeowners were advised to contact the fire department if the alarms went off again. Sunday, January 15, 2017 03:41 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Hidden Lake Trail. After further investigation the alarm was confirmed to be a flood alarm, located on the floor near their water softener. There was a very small amount of residual water located near the softener that set off the device. The homeowner was advised to contact their water softener supplier to check over the system. 22:45 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an odour investigation on Foxtail Court. On scene fire staff met with the homeowners who advised there was a smell of natural gas outside the house. Crews first investigated near the gas meter to the residence where there was a slight odour of natural gas. Crews entered the home and using detectors found zero readings of CO. Union Gas was following up.

Monday, January 16, 2017 02:20 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Russell St. On scene fire staff entered the home and using detectors found readings of 60 ppm. The homeowner advised they were doing some soldering in the evening. Fire staff checked the garage where readings went as high as 200 ppm. The main garage door was opened from the outside and fire staff located the leaking acetylene tank that the homeowner was using earlier and removed it from the garage and secured the valve. The home was ventilated and CO levels dropped back down to 0 ppm on all levels. 05:57 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a structure fire at an abandoned farm house on Sixth Line in Milton. On scene fire staff met with Milton Chief and applied water. Halton Hills Fire staff eventually cleared the scene and turned over control to Milton Fire. Tuesday, January 17, 2017 03:46 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Stonebrook Cr. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who advised that their alarms went off after the power was out. Using detectors fire staff found zero readings of CO in the home. 05:45 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Apple Blossom Cres. On scene fire staff entered the home and using detectors found zero readings. Due to the age of the CO detectors, fire staff supplied the family with a new CO detector. 06:26 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a multi-vehicle motor vehicle collision, on Ewing Street. Fire staff assisted with loading the patient into the ambulance and cleared the scene. 06:46 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a motor vehicle collision in the area of Tenth Line & Steeles Ave. While enroute, fire was advised by EMS that their assistance was not required. 08:01 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Lasby Lane in Acton. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who advised that a plastic bowl had caught fire on the right rear burner of the stove while heating up water in a pot. Fire staff entered the home and found moderate smoke. Staff checked for extension using a thermal imaging camera, and found none. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 07:46 Hours - Fire fighters responded to the report of a school bus in a ditch, with no injuries, on Clayhill Road, due to icy conditions. On scene fire staff assisted with removing the students from the school bus to a safe area and loading them onto a new bus. 15:00 Hours - Fire fighters responded to the report of a possible structure fire on 10 Sideroad. Fire staff entered the home and found an oven on self-clean had filled the

home with smoke. The occupants had evacuated the home prior to arrival. Fire staff removed the oven from the home, ventilated the structure and deodorized. Thursday, January 19, 2017 02:07 Hours - Fire fighters responded to the report of hay bales on fire on Regional Road 25 in Acton. The fires were extinguished using water, pitch forks, and shovels. Public Works also attended the scene and using loaders, assisted in breaking down the hay bales. Halton Regional Police remained on scene to close the southbound lanes of Highway 25. Fire staff remained on scene for approximately 11 hours to ensure all hay bales were extinguished. Friday, January 20, 2017 04:38 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a single-vehicle rollover, in the area of Regional Road 25 and 25 Sideroad in Acton. Halton Regional Police and ambulance were on scene upon arrival. Fire staff checked the vehicle for hazards and finding none, cleared the scene. 09:30 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Heather Court. On scene fire staff met with neighbouring residents who thought there was smoke coming from the home. It was determined to be steam exhausting from the clothes dryer vent. 14:16 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Cobblehill Road in Acton. Ambulance was on scene upon arrival and in the process of loading the patient into the ambulance. Fire staff assisted with patient care enroute to the hospital. 18:52 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a three-vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of Sixth Line and Highway 7. Ambulance was on scene upon arrival, attending to patients. Fire staff disabled the vehicles and applied absorbant to leaking fluids 20:01 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Ridgegate Cr. Fire staff entered the new home, currently under construction, and found a portable propane heater in the basement burning for heat. CO readings of 50 ppm had set off the interconnected smoke/CO detectors. Crews ventilated the home, and gas to the unit was shut off. Saturday, January 21, 2017 12:34 Hours – Fire fighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) activation on Victoria Ave in Acton. Fire staff entered the home and using detectors found zero readings. Due to the age of the detectors, fire staff replaced the expired alarms. Sunday, January 22, 2017 14:41 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Bower St in Acton. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who had disposed of hot charcoal in a garbage bin, which then caught fire and spread to a plastic storage container and snow blower. The homeowner had extinguished the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival. Fire staff checked for any residual heat and cleared the scene.

15:04 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an ambulance assist on Weber Dr. Halton Regional Police and ambulance were on scene upon arrival. Fire staff assisted with patient care and provided lighting for the scene. 16:55 Hours – Fire fighters responded to an alarm activation on Tidey Ave in Acton. On scene fire staff met with the homeowner who had been cooking sausage which set off the smoke detector. While on scene, fire staff explained to the homeowner that their house number was difficult to see and could interfere with a timely response. Home owners were also advised to follow up with their alarm company regarding the age of their system and the fact that the alarm company attempted to contact them without success. 23:44 Hours – Fire fighters responded to the report of a possible structure fire on Hepburn Cres. While enroute, dispatch advised that something was burning between the houses. On scene, fire staff found the homeowners attempting to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher and buckets of water. A small plastic storage bin had caught fire, and had spread to the wooden fence, the AC unit, Hydro meter, and other items against the exterior of the home. Crews extinguished the remainder of the fire and surrounding items. Hydro was called to attend on scene to replace the melted glass on the meter base. Weekly Safety Message Use space heaters wisely. Keep heaters at least 1 meter away from combustibles and do not use extension cords unless appropriately rated for this use.
