Broadview Public School INSTRUCTION Districts which receive USDA School Foods School Wellness Broadview Public School is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children's health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. Therefore, it is the policy of Broadview Public School to include; 

Community involvement to include input from parents, students, school food service personnel, school board members, educators, school nurse, and the general public in the development of the school wellness program.



Goals for nutrition education designed to promote student wellness to include: a) All students shall receive nutrition education that teaches the knowledge and skills needed to adopt healthy eating behaviors. b) Nutrition education shall be integrated into the curriculum. c) Nutrition information and education shall be offered throughout the school, based on the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.



Nutritional guidelines for all foods available at school during the school day with the objective of promoting student health and nutrient rich meals and snacks including food and beverages used for classroom rewards and fund raising efforts.

Broadview Public School INSTRUCTION Nutrition and Wellness Plan Purpose and Goal There is a strong correlation between nutrition and learning. Students that engage in healthy eating patterns are much more likely to achieve their full academic potential, reach full physical and mental growth, and maintain lifelong health. Research has shown that healthy eating habits considerably reduce the risk of early mortality and development of many chronic diseases. Schools have been given the responsibility of helping students develop and maintain healthy eating patterns. A successful school nutrition program will have a long term positive influence on the healthy eating habits of students. It is the goal of Broadview Public school's Wellness Plan to provide staff and students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make nutritious and enjoyable food choices reflective of a healthy lifestyle. Broadview School is encouraged to model healthy eating habits and physical activity as a valuable part of a daily routine. Broadview Public School shall develop, adopt, and implement a comprehensive plan to promote and encourage healthy eating habits and physical activity. School and community resources shall work collaboratively to equitably serve the needs and interests of all students. Broadview School will make every effort to provide knowledge and skills that will help students develop healthy eating choices and physical activity that will serve them for a lifetime. Nutritional and Physical Activity 

   

A school health advisory committee shall be appointed by the superintendent. It will be comprised of administration, teaching staff, a student representative, the school nurse, school food service personnel, a school board member, and community members. The mission of the advisory committee will be to address nutrition and physical activity issues; and to develop, implement, and evaluate the district's wellness policy. The advisory committee will offer revisions to the wellness policy on an as needed basis. The advisory committee shall meet as often as is necessary to fulfill the mission of the advisory committee. The superintendent will address concerns such as food types available on campus, sufficient meal time, nutritional value, physical activity, and any other issues on a case by case basis. Nutritional education shall be integrated across the curriculum. Students will be engaged in physical activity. School food service personnel will participated in making decisions which will affect the total school environment as it relates to school nutrition. The advisory committee will conduct an annual review of the wellness policy as to its effectiveness and to identify areas of improvement.



The advisory committee will aide in the implementation of improvements goals and the collection and interpretation of data used to measure effectiveness. School Meals

   



Broadview Public School will offer breakfast and lunch programs. Students are highly encouraged to promote and participate in both of these programs School food service personnel will be properly qualified, attend regular professional development opportunities, and will be responsible for Child Nutrition Programs. Food safety will be an integral part of the school food service operation. Menus will meet nutrition standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, conforming to acceptable menu planning principles. Menus will feature a variety of healthy appetizing, high quality choices served at the proper temperatures. Students will be given the opportunity for input on local, cultural and ethnic favorites. Student that choose to bring cold lunch will be encourage to purchase milk for consumption with their cold lunch. Healthy Food Options

      

The advisory committee will develop and recommend guidelines to the administration on nutrition standards for food and beverages offered through any school function. Fundraising organizations are encouraged to sell items that are healthy and nutritious. The withholding of food as punishment will not be allowed. The District will provide nutritional information to parents which will encourage parents to provide healthy and nutritious foods for their children. Teachers should encourage parents to provide healthy snacks for classroom parties, birthdays, etc. Classroom parties will not be scheduled before lunch. Staff members are asked to refrain from using candy and snacks of minimal nutritional value as rewards for students. Vending machines will be available for student use after lunch hour is over. Vending machines will be filled with healthy alternatives such as bottled water, diet or sugar free beverages, caffeine free beverages, juice, etc. A breakfast program will be offered to all students. Lunch Room Area

    

Drinking fountains will be available for students both during meals and throughout the day. School personnel will assist all students in developing the healthy practice of washing/sanitizing hands before eating. School personnel will schedule sufficient time to reduce the waiting period of standing in line when meals are served. Students will have an appropriate amount of time to eat. Socializing among staff and students will be encouraged. Adults will properly supervise the lunch room area and serve as role models for students.

 

Parents are encouraged to dine with their students in the lunchroom. Creative and innovative methods will be used to monitor appropriate student behavior. Nutrition Information

Broadview Public School will follow health education curriculum standards and guidelines as stated by the Montana Office of Public Instruction. Students in K-8 will receive nutrition education that is interactive and teaches skills needed to promote healthy lifestyle. Teachers are encouraged to integrate nutrition education into the core curriculum such as math, science, social studies, and language arts wherever possible and applicable. Nutrition education will be offered in the school dining area and in the classrooms. This will be a coordinated effort between the teaching staff and school food service personnel. Displaying posters, providing videos, developing websites, etc. on nutrition topics are encourage. Broadview Public School will participate in USDA nutrition programs when feasible and conduct nutrition educational activities that involve students, parents, and the community. Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle

    

Students will receive positive verbal and non-verbal messages from all school personnel about healthy eating and physical activity throughout the school setting. Broadview School will consider student needs in planning for a healthy school nutrition environment. Student input will be encourage. Broadview School will promote a healthy lifestyle. Healthy eating habits and physical activity will be promoted to students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community at activities/organizations after school to include fund-raising activities. Broadview School will communicate to the community its endeavors to promote a healthy school environment through the use of bulletins, newsletters etc. Commitment to Physical Activity

      

Elementary students will be encouraged to participate in daily recess. Students will be provided with opportunities for physical activity other than P.E. classes. They physical education curriculum will be aligned to state and national standards. Adequate physical education equipment will be available for students use. Physical activity will be integrated into regular classroom activities. All students will be required to participate in some form of physical activity. Physical education teachers will meet state certification requirements. Physical Activity Goals

The primary goal of Broadview School's physical activity component is to provide opportunities for every student to develop the knowledge and skills for specific physical activities, maintain physical fitness, regularly participate in physical activity, and understand the short and long term benefits of a physically active and healthful lifestyle.

Physical Education Classes     

All students in grades K-8 will receive at least 50 minutes of physical education/activity per week. A minimum of 50% of physical education class time will be spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity. The physical education curriculum will meet state content standards. Teachers to student ratios will not exceed state accreditation standards. Opportunities for physical activity will be incorporated into other subject area classes. Recess

  

K-3 students will have a minimum of 50 minutes of supervised recess per day preferably outdoors. 4-6 students will have a minimum of 35 minutes of supervised recess per day preferably outdoors. Junior high and high school students will have a minimum of 15 minutes of supervised recess per day preferably outdoors. Physical Activity Before and After School

 

Broadview School will offer extra-curricular physical activity programs. All students will be encouraged to participate. Broadview School will encourage students to participate in community or club activities. Routes to School



Broadview School will work in conjunction with the local public works, law enforcement, and other public agencies to assess the need for safer and easier walking and/or bide ringing corridors to and from school. Nutrition Standards



A young adult's lifelong eating habits are greatly influenced by the types of foods and beverages available to them. Healthy foods of good nutritional content will be available wherever food is served during the normal school day. Nutritional Goals

       

1% or fat-free milk is offered for hot lunch students to have during their meal. Elementary students are only allowed one serving of chocolate milk, but may have two servings of white milk. 7-12 students are allowed no more than two servings of milk. 1/2 c. Canned or fresh fruit/vegetables will be required daily for students. When available, fresh fruit will be offered to breakfast participants. Whole grain bread will be the bread of choice. Procedures established by food service personnel will be established for providing information to anyone interested in regard to ingredients used and nutritional values of the foods served. Food and beverages served during the school day will meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Standards for Foods and Beverages.

School Meal Program  

The school food service program will operate in accordance with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA of 2010) and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations of the State of Montana. Broadview School will comply with all USDA regulations and state policies. Broadview School will offer varied and nutritious food choices that are consistent with the federal government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Snacks

 

Whenever possible, nutritious snacks will be offered to students that will follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Such snacks could be items such as bagels, muffins, tail mix, pretzels, granola bars, breakfast squares, string cheese, yogurt, fruit cups, fresh fruit or vegetables, fat-free popcorn, milk etc. Activities and Celebrations

 

Broadview School will discourage celebrations that involve unhealthy food during the school day. Activities that encourage healthy eating and physical activity will be promoted. Use of School Facilities Outside of Normal School Hours



As per board policy, school facilities and grounds will be available to students, staff and community members beyond normal school hours.
