Wu Wei (Schisandra chinensis) According to traditional Chinese medicine, Schisandra fruit tonifies kidneys, alleviates diarrhea, inhibits sweating, generates fluids, and quiets the spirit.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) The use of ginseng (人参) is well over two thousand years old in Chinese medicine. Ginseng contains ginsenosides. The amount of ginsenosides in ginseng depends on how the plant was cultivated and the age of the root. Wild ginseng is rare and commands the highest prices on the market. Red Panax ginseng is the most popular form of ginseng and it is usually packaged as a liquid or tea. Ginseng comes in two kinds, red and white. The color of the ginseng depends on how it is processed. White ginseng is unprocessed and dries naturally. Red ginseng is processed with steam and is believed to be more effective.
Ginkgo (Gingko biloba) Gingko is an ancient tree; fossil remains from the Permian era, 250 million years ago have been found. Apart from being a manifestation of the sacred concept of yin and yang, the tree was primarily a symbol of longevity and vitality. Recent studies have explored the use of gingko as an anti-inflammatory and in treating autoimmune disorders.

The UCLA Medicinal Herb Garden The use of plants in treating disease has evolved alongside the study of medicine. Each culture, and generations within these cultures, have benefitted from new discoveries and ancient wisdom. In the past, hospitals, medical schools, and other educational institutions have had gardens from which they could study various health-giving plant properties. Many modern medicines are derived from plants. Our goal is to increase awareness of the historic role these beautiful plants play in health. The UCLA Medicinal Garden is part of the Healthy Campus Initiative. We will create several beds containing plants that are historically and currently in use in many different cultures, especially those well-represented in Los Angeles.
