1n line with the implementation of the K to 12 Education Curricull as well as the Division's 1 Programs and Projects in Elementary/Secondary Araling Panlipunan for Schobl Year 2016-2017, there will be a L~CTUREISEMINAR ON WEST PHILIPPINE SEA DISPUTE and KOMIKS TURN OVER to be held at Quezon City Science Interactive Center on February 18, 2017 at 7:30 a.m. l \tis requested that special arrangement be made to avoid disruptio of classes as stipulated in DepEd Order No. 9, s. 2005 entitled "INSTITUTING MEASURES TO INCREASE ENGAGED TIME-ONTASK ft!ND ENSURING COMPLIANCE THEREWITH". i I

Legal Basis
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the ·sea (U NCLOS) establi shes a comprehensive legal framework to govern all activities and uses of the world's seas and oceans. The Convention defines the limits of territorial seas of countries from which they can explore and exploit marine resources. It was adopted in 1982 in Montego bay, Jamaica after nine years of negotiations involving representatives from more than 150 countries. UNCLOS entered into force in November 16, 1994. As of January 2015, 166 countries and the European Union have joined the Convention. The Philippines is the '111h country that ratified the Convention.
II.
Objectives
This seminar/lecture on West Philippine Sea aims to: a. Assert the position of the Philippine Government that fully recognizes the indisputable sovereignty and territorial integrity of the I Republic of the Philippines over its claims in West Philippine sea in conformity with the international law. b. Instill the values of patriotism to the participants of s~minarAecture as well as to rekindle their national spirit. · c. Effectively educate the participants on West Philippine Sea and raise awareness on its socioeconomic and political importance tb the nation.l d. Enable the participants to assess and participate in achieving peaceful and durable solution to the dispute in the West Philippine Sea. 1
