WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ABOUT GOD? John 3:1-18 Mark Kring, Senior Pastor March 24 & 25, 2018

3:1 Nicodemus had been watching Jesus; he was attracted to Him because of the miracles, and he wanted to know more. 3:3 Jesus was not interested in Nicodemus’ curiosity, but instead went straight to the real issue. 3:3 New birth is an action of God by which He gives life to those who are “dead in their sins.” 3:4 Our challenge is to abandon every notion we’ve ever had that we can fix our brokenness ourselves. 3:7 What Jesus told Nicodemus was contrary to everything he had thought. His entire life he had believed that salvation was earned through good works. 3:9 It is extremely difficult to surrender our pre-conceived ideas about God. 3:9 God says hard things; the temptation is to soften them. 3:10 Jesus expected Nicodemus to understand because of the revealed knowledge found in the Old Testament, which gives all the light needed. 3:11-12 Nicodemus’ problem was not a lack of revelation; in that brief dialogue he gained more knowledge than any of the Old Testament prophets ever had. 3:11-12 When Jesus told Nicodemus what he personally needed, Nicodemus’ intellectual side gave way to pride; he did not want to admit that he was a sinner in need of a Savior.

3:14-15 God has always been a God of grace. People have a need…God provides a remedy. 3:16 Jesus is not one of the ways to the Kingdom of God...He is the ONLY way! 3:16 If there is eternal life, there must be eternal death. Jesus gave Nicodemus the space to process all of this information. He heard the plan from God himself, but still needed time to process it.

“Jesus’ word regarding the new birth shatters once for all every supposed excellence of man’s attainment.... Spiritual birth is something one undergoes, not something he produces.” ~R.C.H. Lenski
