What Inspires Me Teacher’s Guide Grades K-2 Encourage your students to show what inspires them through a creative, uplifting doodle! Doodles can be submitted between January 8, 2018 – March 2, 2018

Activity Inspiration Brainstorm — I’m Possible Objectives:

• Help students understand that the first step to doing/being/becoming the things that inspire them is visualizing how they can become possible.

• Have students identify a place, thing, or experience that inspires them. • Encourage visualization by having students imagine what it would be like to be the place/thing/experience that inspires them.

Instructions: Pre-work (may be necessary for Kindergarten students): Define the word “inspire” for students by writing it on boards/walls/visible classroom spaces. Model and use the word with students prior to the brainstorm (if possible), and encourage them to try using the word in group and 1:1 settings.

Brainstorm time: 1. Do a quick group discussion about the things and people that inspire us. Instructor can lead off with an example:

“I am inspired by (idea or thing), because (act or thing they do). I want to be more like (idea or thing), so I (positive action).” Repeat this around the circle until every student has had a chance to answer.

2. Explain to students that they are about to do some imagination “magic.” Explain that when the “magic” is

complete, each one of them will be transformed into an idea or thing that inspires them. It can be anyone or anything, but it has to be a positive thing (so no Darth Vaders, Kylo Rens, or Megatrons ).

3. Play a short bit of “inspiration music” (see example at link tbd and when it finishes, have the students begin the

short worksheet below. (Alternatively, the group can verbally share around the room.) Note: the “magic” can be anything – simply a bit of music, or a special coin that the students pass around, a “transformation hat,” even just quiet time for 30 seconds – anything that shifts attention and directs focus is fine.

Steps: 1. Ask students to reflect on the brainstorm lesson, and how they can translate their unique visual representation into a Google Doodle.

4. Now it’s time to doodle! Pass out the submission forms in this packet and have students create their doodles. We recommend giving students at least 30 minutes to complete their creations. You may also want to let them go home and brainstorm with parents and family members. Download additional entry forms at doodle4google.com. 


5. Encourage students to select any medium that inspires their inner artist. They can use anything, like paint, clay, or even food to create a doodle that represents their inspiration. 


6. Collect the completed doodles and submit them using the contest instructions outlined here.

Dear Parent/Guardian, At Google, we believe that inspiration can come from anywhere, but there’s always been one source that never ceases to amaze us: our kids. Year after year, we are moved by the delight and wonder they find in the world around them, and these flashes of brilliance help influence our products and make the web — and our world — a better place. This year marks our 10th annual Doodle 4 Google contest, and our theme is: “What inspires me.” We’re excited to have students (and parents) reflect on what most inspires them by creating a unique, uplifting doodle using any medium (crayon, paint, silkscreen, wood, computer chips, chocolate chips (er, maybe not), etc...). Five finalists will be flown to Google’s Mountain View headquarters, and one winning student from among the five will receive:

• A $30,000 college scholarship • A $50,000 Google for Education technology package for their school • A behind-the-scenes experience with the Doodle team to transform their Doodle into an interactive experience that will launch by the end of 2018
