The Scientific method

Steps in the Scientific Method 1.  State the problem 2.  Get some information 3.  Form a hypothesis 4.  Test hypothesis 5.  Analyze data 6.  Draw a conclusion

MEASUREMENT •  Measurements always include a number and a unit. •  Tools must be used to complete measurements. •  You must know what property of an object you are measuring to know what unit and tool to use.

Length •  Distance between two points •  Base Units- Meters •  Tools- ruler, meterstick, tape measure

Measuring Practice •  Write the measurements for A-E on the ruler on the next slide on your notes. Remember to include units for it to be a measurement. •  Then check your answers.

Measuring in Centimeters

A= .6 cm

D= 3.7 cm

B= 1.2 cm

E= 5.6 cm

C= 2.2 cm

Volume •  Amount of space a substance occupies •  Base Unit- Liters •  Best tool- graduated cylinder

•  If the object is a cube take LxWxH to find the volume.

Mass vs Weight •  Weight is the amount of gravitational pull on an object. (Tool- scale) •  Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object. (Tool- balance) •  For most situations on Earth mass and weight will appear the same, but they are very different. We will only talk about mass in this class.
