Group Releases Collision Injury Data, Calls for Whyte Avenue Design Reboot Contacts: Conrad Nobert, Whyte Avenue Reboot Committee (587.921.3259) Murray Davison, Old Strathcona Business Association (780.437.4182) The Whyte Avenue Reboot Committee (composed of advocates, community leagues, and the local business association) has released data obtained from the City of Edmonton that reveals pedestrian and cyclist injuries and deaths over the past 10 years along the Whyte Avenue Corridor. The data, which are drawn from police record keeping between 20042014, show a total of 192 injuries and deaths, 1.6 a month on average, during that time over a three kilometre stretch of Whyte Avenue. “Whyte Avenue is unacceptably dangerous for people walking or riding bikes” said advocate Conrad Nobert. “How can the City be okay with there being one or two injuries or deaths every month in its most vibrant pedestrian district?” The group is calling for a “Design Reboot” of the three kilometre stretch. “The City should redesign Whyte Avenue to make it safer and more comfortable for what they call ‘vulnerable road users’, the people on bikes and on foot who frequent the area”, said Nobert. “We’re calling on City Council to reboot the Avenue by redesigning it according to its Complete Streets Guidelines. A Complete Street is one that is comfortable and safe for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or mode of transportation.” “We think that people would be okay taking an extra 1 or 2 minutes to drive the stretch in order to prevent the injury or death of 1 or 2 people a month” said Murray Davison of the Old Strathcona Business Association. “We’re just asking the City to do the right thing and create a street design that balances safety and convenience for everyone using the road.” The Whyte Avenue Reboot Committee has organized a minute of silence to commemorate the three-year anniversary of the passing of Isaak Kornelsen, who was killed riding his bike on Whyte Avenue in 2012. Supporters, friends and family of all victims of Whyte Avenue are invited to observe the minute of silence on August 28, 2015. Event: ● What: Whyte Avenue Reboot Minute of Silence ● When: 6:30 p.m., August 28, 2015 ● Where: Isaak Kornelsen Memorial Parklet, 10151 Whyte Ave

More: What would Whyte Avenue as a Complete Street look like? Applying the Complete Streets design process on Whyte Avenue might involve the following elements: ● creating a design speed of 30 km/h along the Avenue’s busiest 10 blocks. When a street is designed for a certain speed, various elements (such as narrower lanes,

curb extensions and trees) are used to make that speed feel natural and safe for driving without coercion by photo radar. adding curb extensions at crossings to enable people on foot to safely walk into the parking lane before they begin crossing the street.
