wars, and Friday was spirit day. Everyone went to a pep-rally before the Friday game. Saturday was the homecoming dance. "It was a good feeling to see all the students support the school," said Senior Justin Murphey. "A lot of students really participated in homecoming. having school spirit like the seniors." On our homecoming game New Caney High played Caney Creek High. The New Caney football time smashed Caney Creek 49-0. New Caney had a very good homecoming game. “To me, students were able to express themselves by participating on homecoming dress up week, like dynamic duo day,” said sophomore Berenice Soto. Video Team Takes Home San Antonio Award

Left-to-Right: Corey Campbell, Billy Elliott, Joseph Applegate, Jim Becka, J. Campbell; Sitting Ali Rami, Chris Torres

By Sintique Alvizar, Destiny Burnham, Alejandra Gonzalez Students Ali Rami, Chris Torres, Joseph Applegate, Billy Elliott, and Corey Campbell competed in the Texas Association of Journalism Educators (TAJE) Fall Fiesta journalism competition in San Antonio in October. They finished the competition with the top feature story rating at the tournament, which took a look at high school journalism budget cuts and how the cuts are impacting understanding of the First Amendment. Many high schools are replacing certified journalism teachers with English teachers without journalism certification. The English teachers do not have formal training in First Amendment Journalism. The students also received awards in news, sports reporting, and promotional video categories. They also competed in an on-site video competition that required them to produce a feature story. “Taking part in this tournament every year helps students get ready for the school year,” teacher Jim Becka said. “They get to brush up on their journalism skills and have a lot of fun. Winning awards also opens up opportunities for scholarships.”

Sports

Basketball tryouts were held in October in anticipation of the Winter season. Special plans are being made between journalism and basketball to bring video and the big screen to Eagle Gym. New Caney and Porter took a big leap into the football sports world by finishing the first month of competition with a district loss. Both teams are in playoff contention this year. Cross Country worked hard during the summer preparing for the season. They rose at 5:00 every morning and hit the trails trying to get into condition for

a great season. Coach Salinas says that most runners have shaved five minutes off their time. Volleyball brought a district 8-7 mark into the final weeks of October play and a shot at the playoffs. Their overall mark was 16-17. Wingspan - Serving NCHS since 1938 Editor - Jim Becka Photography Editor - Corey Campbell Adviser - Jim Becka News tips and comments are welcome. Path to another Playoff May Go Through Porter Battle Line Promises to be Major Event By John Daigle The Battle Line on 59 will be a major event this year with two undefeated district teams facing each other in a game that could determine district champion. Porter has not beaten New Caney in six tries, but this year could be different. The high powered Eagle offense has averaged 42 points per game. Porter is running on high octane with a 34 points per game average. Last week New Caney defeated Barber’s Hill 42-17 and Porter defeated Humble 36-6. The Eagle defense has been pretty impressive. Barber’s Hill had the ball near the end zone in the first half and came away with zero points, and their first drive of the second half got within scoring range before stalling. New Caney senior running back Marte Allison is

Friends of Distinction Began Radio Career Looking Back By Jim Becka “Love Or Let Me Be Lonely” by the Friends of Distinction was the first 45 record I loaded onto the turntable at Beaumont’s KLVI radio during my first all-night radio shift in 1974. I still love the song. Music has changed over the years and so has radio. KLVI had a great signal. We got letters from listeners in Australia because the station had a powerful signal on the lower part of the radio frequency. It went a long way. Radio control rooms (where the DJ sits) had long consoles with large knobs and massive audio tape machines. Broadcasters use to call the knobs pots, because they looked like small upside-down oven pots. They handled the volume for record turntables and audio tape playback machines. Now stations have LED meters and computers. The control room at KSBJ has changed significantly from my first DJ shift at the station in 1995. A computer chooses the songs and commercials. The DJ presses a button and stops the computer-generated programs during talk breaks. I’ve had a long radio career. I’m in my 21st year at Houston’s KSBJ radio and have been on KTRH and KIKK in Houston, KLIF in Dallas, and the Mutual Radio Network as a reporter. I got my first radio job after returning to Beaumont from Jerusalem and enrolling in a class at KVLU, the Lamar University campus radio station. Al Caldwell, a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, taught part of the class and showed me how to make an air check,

which got me in the door at KLVI. I loved music and listened to Dave Armstrong (Randy Orchid) play Cream music on KAYC, when he thought program director Al Caldwell wasn’t listening. Armstrong was a couple of years ahead of me at Beaumont’s French High School and was very influential in Beaumont radio in the late 60’s. Larry Williams, and Michael Byrd were other French students working for KAYC. Caldwell once told me there was something in the water in the north end of Beaumont that turned high school students into DJ’s. KLVI was a block format radio station and played rock at night and country during the day. Texas Radio Hall of Famer Gordon Baxter came in and replaced me at 6 A.M. Baxter’s son-in-law Allen Rain, KLVI News Director, encouraged me to get out of the station quickly. He told me Baxter could be pretty moody. He was. Baxter (Bax to many), was an author of books and a columnist for newspapers and magazines. He was senior editor of Flying magazine and the highest

Radio - From Previous Page paid radio announcer in the Beaumont area when we worked together. I liked Baxter and helped him produced some commercials when we both moved to KTRM in 1975 (at that time owned by LBJ). His vision was giving him trouble and he was having trouble seeing the production room meters. J.P. Richardson, who died in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens in 1959, had been the program director at KTRM at the time of his death. The musicians were immortalized in “The Day the Music Died”, by singer-songwriter Don McLean who referred to the accident in his 1971 song “American Pie”. Continued below.

I loved loud music, growing up in Beaumont listening to Caldwell and Armstrong. My dad once came into my room and told me that I would lose my hearing if I did not turn down the music. I wondered if I would fuss at my kids over loud music. I left Beaumont for Houston radio (by way of a radio teaching job at Stephen F. Austin State University) with my wife and daughters in tow. My youngest daughter Jamie, at that time a five year old, came into my Houston radio station control room and told me:

Radio station control rooms in the 70’s consisted of turntables (above) and audio tape machines that were analog. They consisted of magnetic impulses on tape.

“Dad, you’ll lose your hearing if you don’t turn down the music.” I still love loud music.
